Chapter 492: Chapter 492. Today is the Day
While Amon was tortured, the three rebel elders sat on the upper platform. They had a long meeting with everyone there. All the people on the upper platform were rebel leaders. They were the pillars who ran most of the operations all around the kingdom. It was rare for them to get together like this, so they were using the opportunity to discuss various issues.
"Is that guy for real? How can anyone endure that much pain?" One of the leaders asked.
"Is he even alive? He behaves more like a corpse than a living person," another added.
"This is indeed surprising...," Pan Lohuan muttered. He turned to Ni Zheng and asked, "Are you truly certain he has the allure beacon?"
Ni Zheng felt uneasy by the question. He answered, "Well... He implied that he knows about the artifact."
"Implied...? What exactly did he say?" Luan Xuan asked. "Don’t tell me you have everyone gathered here with false information?"
"No, of course not!" Ni Zheng hurriedly replied. "He spilled everything to me when he was drunk. He told me how he was the one who used the Allure Beacon after we lured the spirit beasts to Qishurg City’s vicinity. How he tricked us to do his bidding before cutting ties with us."
Ni Zheng lied because he knew Luan Xuan still harbored the desire to take revenge on him for his grandson. If he told everyone his suspicion of Amon having the Allure Beacon was from a vague mention, he might become the focus of attention for everyone here who had become impatient due to the lack of progress. Ni Lulu was the only one who knew he was lying. She didn’t rat him out.
"He could have just talked nonsense because he was drunk," Luan Xuan argued. "How can you be certain that he was telling the truth?"
"He shared a lot of details that he shouldn’t have known if he wasn’t involved in the Qishurg City’s operation," Ni Zheng added more lies.
"Really? What details?" Luan Xuan asked.
Ni Zheng was vexed. Luan Xuan intentionally tried to corner him. Thankfully, his cousin came to his rescue.
"Brother Xuan, please remember our enemy is out there. My cousin is not one," Ni Lulu said. "Amon may not have admitted that he has the Allure Beacon, but he also hasn’t denied it. If he truly never had one, wouldn’t he have told us that to end his torture? The fact that he refused to speak at all tells us he has something to do with the Allure Beacon. He just doesn’t want to let us know."
Pan Lohuan nodded. "I agree with Sister Lulu. Furthermore, even in the remote chance he truly doesn’t possess the artifact, he is still a colonel and the main commander of a kingdom’s major force. He should be privy to much information that might interest us. I plan to have the torturers pry this information from him after he tells us everything about the Allure Beacon. I didn’t expect him to be so obstinate."
"No one can endure this level of torture without breaking down. His mind is probably already broken," One of the rebel leaders voiced his opinion.
Pan Lohuan shook his head. "His eyes don’t look that way."
"Maybe you should say eye. He only has one left," Luan Xuan jested.
"What about his possessions? If he isn’t willing to tell us anything, probably we can find some clues from his belongings?"
"Aside from his clothes, this is the only thing on his person when we captured him," Ni Lulu said. She put a space ring on the table. "Everything is still inside."
The leader who asked picked up the space ring and checked its content. Inside were some random clothes, a few common weapons, and a stack of aer stones.
"These are all?" He asked.
"Yes," Ni Lulu confirmed.
"Nothing strange about it," Pan Lohuan uttered. "Military personnel and operatives who went on missions mostly took only important stuff to support their mission. His valuable possessions should be locked up inside a vault in his base."
"Fort Fresh Maw?" The leader asked. "Maybe we should go check that place for the Allure Beacon."
"How do you propose we intrude into a heavily fortified military fortress?" His friend asked him back as if he had just heard the most foolish statement.
"Even if he has the Allure Beacon, it is not guaranteed to be at the fort. It might be somewhere inside the capital," Ni Lulu said. "Aside from being a military colonel, he is also the head of an organization called the Lin Hei Sect. They are a rather big player. They possess many properties inside Golden Stone City.
Everyone displayed a depressed look. "So, our best chance is to make him talk."
Everyone turned to Amon, who was still undergoing torture without uttering a sound.
"That chance doesn’t look so good, though," One of them said.
Pan Lohuan let out a long, frustrated sigh. He rose from his seat. His feet left the ground. He slowly floated to the stage where Amon was at. The torturers noticed his approach. They moved away while bowing their heads.
Pan Lohuan landed before Amon. Like the time with Luan Xuan, Amon returned the stare using his one good eye. Aside from the blood and bruises, his expression remained the same as then.
"You are an impressive man, Colonel Amon," Pan Lohuan spoke. "You have proven it these five days. No common human can endure what you go through while remaining calm and collected the way you do."
Amon remained silent.
"You think you can delay us? For what? For a rescue? Sorry, I must burst your bubble. We are very proud of the secrecy of our hideouts. How do you think we managed to elude the kingdom all this time? No one is coming to save you. You can forget about... Hm?"
Pan Lohuan grabbed Amon’s chin when he spoke. He stopped talking because he sensed Amon was channeling aether along his body.
"You are using an art... A recovery art?" Pan Lohuan uttered after studying the way Amon channeled his aether.
Amon was using the Nine Moon Restorative Mantra while at the same time dialing his Concealed Ghost Body to the max to conceal his usage of the recovery art. Pan Lohuan only detected it after he touched Amon.
Pan Lohuan snickered. "What a pointless struggle," he mocked. "Why bother? You can see these fine people administering recovery salve and giving you recovery pills to make sure you don’t die from these tortures. There is no point in you making the effort yourself. We will keep you alive. You will suffer for as long as you refuse to give up your secrets. Don’t you get it?"
Amon remained silent. This time, a tint of fury arose from inside Pan Lohuan. He never enjoyed being ignored like this. He tightened the grip on Amon’s jaws.
"Listen, you fuck! I can see from your eye and your act that you still have hope left in you. As stupid as that is, I don’t know why you have that thought. Let me tell you that this is the end of your life. You will not get out of this alive. You will not return to your previous life. You should just accept this and save us all the trouble!"
When Amon was still deviant, he tightened his grip again. "Answer me...!!!"
One of the torturers gathered the courage to talk to Pan Lohuan. "Master, please stop. If you break his jaws, it will take a long time for him to heal. He won’t be able to speak during that time even if he wants to."
"He can write," Pan Lohuan uttered while gesturing at Amon’s unscathed left arm.
Even though Pan Lohuan said so, he still released his grip from Amon’s jaw. He preferred Amon to talk instead of write. He left the stage and floated back to his seat.
"You are unlike yourself," Ni Lulu remarked after he returned.
"Hate to say I agree with her, but I agree with her," Luan Xuan said. "You are not your patient self. I expect myself to burst with impatience before you do."
"Is... Is he smiling?" Ni Zheng uttered. He spoke while looking at Amon, which made everyone turn in the same direction.
Amon was indeed grinning. He had been looking down like a helpless convict all this time, but now he was looking up at the people on the upper platform.
"Has he finally gone insane from the torture?" One of the rebel leaders asked.
"No," Pan Lohuan uttered. "That is not the face of an insane person."
A sudden earthquake occurred, followed by rumbling sounds. They were still confused when a series of explosions were heard. These explosions were getting louder by the second. Everyone rose from their seats in alarm.
Some started barking orders, telling their subordinates to check what was happening when the ceiling of the great hall erupted.
A large number of battle puppets and people wearing kingdom uniforms entered the hall from the destroyed ceiling. At the head was Lao Zen, who announced, "Vile rebels! Today is the day your rebellion ends!!"
