Chapter 145: Chapter 49 Analysis of the Scene
"Orlin Gattuso, a third-rank gravity mage," the leading man introduced himself.
A third-rank gravity mage implies that his main sequence is "Meteor" and he has reached level III, which is the core strength among mages in Olin City.
Aske greeted him with a smile, "Hello."
"I’ve noticed that there are a few transcendent of the Arcane Sequence in your team," Orlin glanced over Thira and Medea and said with a smile,
"A suggestion, if you’re interested, you could visit Hippoclate University in the city. There, we teach young transcendent how to effectively use their extraordinary powers, which I believe would be beneficial for your members."
"Thank you," Aske nodded.
Aske had heard about the transcendent university in Olin City in his past life, said to be a place specially for training NPC transcendent.
Naturally, players didn’t need to attend, but some players who were devoted to realistic and narrative settings mingled there, researching historical secrets before running off to forums to write informative articles and produce videos for everyone.
Within the boundaries of the East Solomon Empire, Olin City is the only one that has a university for transcendent. As for why this transcendent training system has not spread to the outside world, that is a historical issue.
Since the Fourth Epoch, on the ruins of the fallen West Solomon Empire, the former West Solomon Research Institute reorganized itself into what is called the "Solomon Church."
In simple terms, they used theology to wrap science, to confuse the invading barbarians and preserve the seeds of technological civilization for mankind.
This tactic surprisingly worked well. To the barbarians, speaking of the "light of mathematics," the "beauty of physics," the "power of chemistry," would only earn you an axe, but telling them "not believing in our Lord means the fire hell" would, in turn, gain their awe and obedience.
Plus, small experiments that looked miraculous to ordinary people, such as "needle floating on water" or "retrieving coins from boiling oil," quickly converted all the invading barbarians.
The fear of the unknown and death has always been the master key to ruling faith.
After Emperor Chadini took control of Italy, he also brought this method of theological packaging back to East Solomon.
Following the Emperor’s orders, the East Solomon Empire’s research institute also changed overnight, rebranded as the "East Solomon Orthodox Church."
Of course, not having undergone a national catastrophe like West Solomon, the upper echelons of the East Solomon Empire had an ambiguous attitude towards extraordinary powers.
They both feared and opposed powerful high-rank transcendent and yet nurtured weak low-rank transcendent newcomers.
They wanted to properly utilize extraordinary powers but feared that one day, the extraordinary forces might become uncontrollable.
Olin City was a product of that era, akin to the concept of free ports or tax havens in the commercial domain. The empire’s higher-ups allowed the transcendent of Olin City to govern themselves, existing as a sort of experimental field.
After the "Iconoclasm" at the end of the Fourth Epoch, other cities’ universities shut down their transcendent faculties, making Olin City the only one left with a transcendent university.
The group continued towards the interior of the town, with Aske contemplating whether to let the girls attend the university.
For some transcendent sequences that heavily rely on spiritual power, acquiring some theoretical knowledge might yield some benefits in casting skills.
Lost in thought, the three Arcane mages, meanwhile, synchronized their efforts, using a crisscross pattern of high-frequency gravitational changes to simulate an earthquake effect and destroy nearby buildings.
The mercenaries looked on with eager anticipation at the mages casting spells, their eyes almost glowing with excitement.
Who doesn’t want powerful extraordinary combat abilities? However, the high prices of spiritual materials and magic potion recipes are enough to keep most people out.
Only the wealthy can become strong, and this world is equally cruel to both non-paying players and impoverished NPCs.
"What is that!" an arcane mage cried out in alarm, and everyone saw a funnel-shaped crater in the ground ahead of them.
Surrounding buildings had collapsed, the cement had melted, and a plethora of power armor wreckage stood erect, their steel frames twisted into bizarre shapes by the high temperatures, silently declaring the horror of the explosion that had occurred here.
It was like a scene from the apocalypse.
An arcane mage came to the edge of the crater, bent down, and scooped up a handful of soil in his hand.
The humus had almost entirely carbonized, leaving only gravel and crystals... He examined the soil in his hands, somewhat stupefied.
Rudashus also thought of the earth-shattering explosion that occurred in the town, which he had seen from afar when he had descended from the mountains, and he couldn’t help but reveal an expression of extreme reverence.
"These must be the Crusaders’ ammunition and fusion batteries, piled up here and then detonated all at once!" he said incredulously.
"No, it must have been a flame sequence ability," the arcane mage at the edge of the crater stood up and looked at the device screen in his hand, "The density of high-energy particles in the vicinity is abnormally high."
"If it were a small-scale nuclear explosion caused by a single-phase nuclear fusion battery, the high-energy particle density in the environment would also increase, right?" the gravity mage Orlin suggested.
"Impossible." The arcane mage said decisively, "Trust me, I have a Ph.D. in arcane theory."
"If it were a nuclear explosion caused by nuclear fusion, the surge in energy particles would come from the transformation of mass particles, and we could calculate the ratio of spin states according to E=mc²."
"I did a rough mental calculation just now, and the calculated ratio of spin states is one-thousandth or even less than the actual environmental value."
"If it were nuclear fusion, it would take a strategic-level hydrogen bomb to achieve that, how could there still be intact buildings nearby? Only a high sequence flame ability could transform a massive amount of low spin state energy particles into high spin state within such a small-scale system."
The arcane mages were having an academic exchange, while the rest listened in a daze, even Aske himself wore a look of utter confusion.
"Let’s assume it is a flame sequence then," Mage Orlin said, "Based on this energy particle density, what level of sequence do you estimate it is?"
At his words, the arcane mage showed a constipated look of struggle:
"Probably Flame VI or Flame VII."
"Where is such a high sequence... Are you suggesting it’s at the law level?" Orlin was immediately shocked, "Impossible, isn’t the current Magic Tide limit Lv.5? The user would be drained!"
"What you’re talking about is the limit of an isolated system, but what if it’s not an isolated system?" another arcane mage joined the debate, "For example, what if Purgatory overlaps the main plane, and the oscillation of the spatial strings leads to leakage..."
"That would have to cause a mutation," Orlin countered, "Where’s the Purgatory Breath? What about the devils? Have you measured the hydrogen sulfide content?"
"Don’t be so rigid, Orlin." The arcane mage pleaded with him, "Science is about making infinite assumptions in the face of limited evidence..."
"Assumptions my ass!" Orlin lamented, tears in his eyes, "If you submit this report, the association will issue an order tomorrow for me to find this law level flame sequence transcendent, where am I supposed to find this person!"
The arcane mages looked at each other, suddenly remembering what Rudashus had said. Before they had come down from the mountains, the only ones left fighting the Crusaders in the center of town were The Azure Longsword Mercenary Corps.
All three turned their burning gaze towards Aske in unison.
