Return to the City: The Strongest King -
Chapter 542 - 543: Fate Ah
Chapter 542: Chapter 543: Fate Ah
On the weekend, Xiaodong went to Provincial City again, this time he didn’t drive; he had two tasks: one was to visit Elder Fang, and the other was to treat Zhong Chuling’s father. Both tasks were mentally exhausting, and driving back would have been tiring as well.
"Mr. Song!" A voice as clear as a bell, full of surprise, rang out from behind Xiaodong.
Behind him stood a tall girl, dressed in a very fashionable outfit, wearing high heels and large sunglasses—quite eye-catching. Xiaodong recognized her at once and said, "Hey, isn’t this the famous host Cheng Xiaoyue?"
Cheng Xiaoyue flashed a charming smile and said, "I look like this, and Mr. Song can still recognize me? It seems I made a deep impression on you."
Xiaodong smiled slightly and said, "You’re the popular host in our city, how could I not remember you?"
"Shh..." Cheng Xiaoyue waved her finger and whispered, "Don’t talk nonsense; I don’t want to attract attention."
Xiaodong laughed and said, "A beauty like you will attract attention even if others don’t know you’re a host."
Cheng Xiaoyue shrugged her shoulders and said, "Anyway, it’s better to have less trouble. By the way, Mr. Song, if I may ask boldly, where are you heading?"
"I’m going to Provincial City."
"So am I. It’s good to have company on the way."
Xiaodong said, "Oh, our seats aren’t next to each other, are they?"
"We can swap with someone else. What, Mr. Song, you don’t even want to chat with me?"
"With a beauty for company, I couldn’t ask for more." Xiaodong smiled. He didn’t particularly like the very pragmatic Cheng Xiaoyue, but he didn’t dislike her either.
There were many people waiting for the train, so it wasn’t convenient for the two to talk much. Soon after ticket check, they boarded, and to Cheng Xiaoyue’s delight, she discovered she didn’t need to swap seats; hers was right next to Xiaodong’s.
"Mr. Song, haha, even if you don’t want to talk to me now, you don’t have an excuse." Cheng Xiaoyue merrily waved her ticket, visibly thrilled.
Xiaodong also smiled and said, "This really is fate."
"Exactly, fate," Cheng Xiaoyue’s happiness intensified.
This little coincidence made their conversation much easier.
"Mr. Song, I’m going to Provincial City for a job interview at the provincial TV station. Won’t you wish me success?"
"Then I wish you all the best."
"Not very heartfelt, I must say. I have no confidence at all. So many people are competing for this position. Alas, someone like me with no connections is definitely not going to succeed."
Xiaodong asked, "If you know you won’t succeed, why are you still trying?"
Cheng Xiaoyue blinked and said, "You have to try, right? What if I succeed? People can’t just give up because it’s difficult, don’t you agree?"
Xiaodong nodded and replied, "That does make sense."
"Too bad you don’t want to back me up; otherwise, I would have had a chance." Cheng Xiaoyue pouted and nudged Xiaodong with her elbow.
Cheng Xiaoyue was indeed a stunning beauty, but right now, Xiaodong really wasn’t interested in flirting, and said, "I don’t know anyone at the TV station, so you’d better not count on me for this."
Cheng Xiaoyue said, "I didn’t ask you to speak for me. I just wanted someone to stand up for me if I were being bullied."
Xiaodong looked at Cheng Xiaoyue. Her corners of her mouth curled up slightly, showing a faint grievance as she said, "Okay, I was just saying."
Xiaodong smiled and said, "Alright, if someone really bullies you and forces you to do something you don’t like, then come to me. Let’s consider it destiny that brought us together today."
"Ah? Really?" Cheng Xiaoyue’s face lit up with surprise.
"Really." Xiaodong gave a faint smile.
Cheng Xiaoyue nodded eagerly and said, "Great, great. I’ll definitely treasure this opportunity and won’t bother Mr. Song unless it’s absolutely necessary."
This earned Xiaodong’s admiration. He said, "Well, I’ll keep my word."
Cheng Xiaoyue was even more delighted, chatting animatedly with Xiaodong the entire way. Before they knew it, they had arrived in Provincial City.
After leaving the station, Cheng Xiaoyue’s former classmate came to pick her up, and Xiaodong waved goodbye to her.
Her classmate was Zheng Qian; both had studied broadcasting and hosting at the same university, and now Zheng Qian worked at the provincial TV station. She had seen Cheng Xiaoyue and Xiaodong leave together and asked with a teasing smile, "Is he your boyfriend? Why didn’t you introduce him to me?"
Cheng Xiaoyue watched Xiaodong’s retreating figure and said, "If only he were my boyfriend."
Zheng Qian said with some exaggeration, "No way, there’s a man who isn’t smitten by our Cheng the campus belle?"
Cheng Xiaoyue shook her head and said, "Sigh, we women are just a bit pretty, but he’s a remarkable person. He’s seen plenty of beauties; how could I catch his eye?"
"Look at you being so pessimistic; I’ve never seen you like this before, hey..." Zheng Qian spotted a car and suddenly exclaimed softly.
"What’s the matter?" Cheng Xiaoyue asked, puzzled.
"That car looks like it belongs to the head of our TV station."
"The head of the provincial TV station’s car?" Cheng Xiaoyue immediately looked in the direction Zheng Qian was pointing, but with so many cars around, she couldn’t tell which one Zheng Qian meant.
"Oh, it seems so. It drove past; I didn’t get a clear look. I don’t know who they’re picking up. Maybe it’s someone using their connections again. Humph, nowadays, you’re nothing without connections," Zheng Qian said scornfully.
Cheng Xiaoyue shook her head and said, "What can we do? I used to be well-protected back in the city, had a good time, but now without protection—even the city isn’t easy. That’s why I’m trying my luck in the province."
Zheng Qian raised her chin and said, "Let’s work hard together then. I refuse to believe that if we’re capable, we’ll never have our day."
In a black Audi, a man in his forties was sitting with Xiaodong in the back. If Zheng Qian saw him, she would certainly recognize him as Fang Boqing, the head of their provincial TV station.
Fang Boqing spoke respectfully, "Mr. Song, hello, and thank you for coming to treat my father again."
"No need for courtesy. It’s I who should thank you for coming to pick me up."
Fang Boqing quickly said, "It’s the least I can do. Father is the cornerstone of our Fang family. You treating him is a great favor to us."
Xiaodong smiled and didn’t reply; too much formalities would lead nowhere. But Xiaodong had a good impression of the Fang family. The children of General Fang were much more outstanding than those of the Ding family, which was probably the main reason why the Fang family ranked first in Provincial City.
