Chapter 540: 541

"Sis! We’re good for today."

After a while, Song Xiaodong withdrew his hand and removed the pillow from Song Xiaoru’s head.

Song Xiaoru turned her head away, not daring to look at Song Xiaodong. Her face was red as a beet as she said, "Then you better get out."

Song Xiaodong immediately replied, "Sis, it’d be better if we went out together. Otherwise, it might be even more awkward."

"Ah... that makes sense." Song Xiaoru could handle the awkwardness in front of Song Xiaodong, but if Miao Qingqing and the others overthought things, it would look really bad for her. After all, in this family, she was the eldest sister, a figure who commanded everyone’s respect.

In a flurry, Song Xiaoru sat up, slipped on her nightgown, and looked at Song Xiaodong. "Xiaodong... just now, that was really embarrassing for me."

Song Xiaodong gave a slight smile and said, "Sis, it’s nothing. That’s human nature, something you can’t repress."

But still... earlier... you little rascal, how could you use your hand..."

It was a blame Song Xiaodong had to accept. He quickly replied, very seriously, "I was helping you relieve your frustration. It’s a form of treatment, so you don’t need to overthink it."

"Oh, treatment." It was exactly because of Song Xiaodong’s help that Song Xiaoru felt so embarrassed, but with such an excuse, she suddenly felt much more at ease. "Why didn’t you say so earlier?"

"Indeed, it’ll be the same next time, and now that I’ve told you, you won’t have to blame me when it happens again."

"Right." Song Xiaoru nodded, although she felt an inexplicable emotion inside. If Song Xiaodong had to do that again next time, should she agree or not?

Song Xiaodong said, "Let’s go, we should head downstairs. Otherwise, they’ll be worried."

"Okay." Song Xiaoru took a couple of deep breaths, her emotions settling down. After getting off the bed and taking a step, her face reddened again as she said, "Wait for me a moment, I need to change my pants."

Song Xiaodong immediately understood what she meant and couldn’t help but laugh.

"You little rascal, dare to laugh at me!" Song Xiaoru immediately glared at him.

"No, no, go ahead and change," Song Xiaodong quickly retracted his neck, fearing his sister’s anger.

By the time the two of them went downstairs, Song Xiaoru had already adjusted her mindset.

"How is it? Is it serious?" Everyone asked Song Xiaodong first.

Song Xiaodong replied casually, "It’s not a big deal. A few more massages should do the trick."

"Massage..." Miao Qingqing and the others had a strange look on their faces, which made Song Xiaoru feel awkward again. She said, "I said we should have gone to the hospital."

Seeing Song Xiaoru embarrassed, Miao Qingqing quickly said, "Sister Xiaoru, Xiaodong is your brother, it’s not a big deal."

Song Xiaoru replied, "Still, it’s awkward, we’re both adults."

Xiao Yingying said with a giggle, "No matter how adult we are, he’s still your brother. If Brother Dongzi were bedridden, you’d still have to take care of him, wouldn’t you?"

Song Xiaodong teased back, "Yingying, are you cursing me?"

Xiao Yingying stuck out her tongue, "I’m just stating a fact. There’s nothing for you two to be concerned about."

Though Xiao Yingying’s words weren’t pleasant, they made sense, and Miao Qingqing along with Miao Xuanxuan nodded in agreement, their expressions returning to normal. With everyone’s persuasion, Song Xiaoru quickly regained her composure.

Song Xiaodong’s phone suddenly rang. Glancing at the number, he said, "I need to step out for a bit."

Miao Xuanxuan immediately asked, "Hey, where are you going? Why do you want to leave just because of a phone call? Do you have something secretive to do?"

Song Xiaodong replied, "It’s a friend of mine. I’ll be right over and will be back late. I’ll fill you in later."

Watching Song Xiaodong leave hastily, Miao Xuanxuan pouted, "That guy definitely has something up his sleeve. Qingqing, why don’t you ask him?"

Miao Qingqing gave a faint smile, "Xiaodong has his own business. I can’t ask about everything. If he doesn’t want to tell me, that means he doesn’t want me to know, and I shouldn’t force him to spill."

"Aren’t you afraid he’s going to meet another woman?" Miao Xuanxuan pouted again.

"Not worried. With me and Yingying at home, if he still goes out to stray, it just means we’re not doing enough," Miao Qingqing replied.

Miao Xuanxuan curled her lip, "You really are open-minded."

After leaving, Song Xiaodong returned the phone call. It was Shen Ning who had called him, so it wasn’t convenient to talk at home.

Shen Ning reported, "Eldest Brother, another one came, but we didn’t catch them alive. They’re dead."

Song Xiaodong frowned, "Dead again? Suicide?"

"Yes! The person was very skilled. I tried to capture them alive, but in the end, I wasn’t successful," Shen Ning explained.

Song Xiaodong’s brows furrowed deeper. Given Shen Ning’s skills, the fact that he couldn’t capture the assailant alive spoke volumes about the enemy’s prowess.

And such a formidable assassin was sent just to kill Feng Kexin, which underscored her importance.

Song Xiaodong didn’t ask further. He drove straight to the vicinity of the school, where Feng Kexin and Shen Ning got into his car.

"Are you okay?" Song Xiaodong asked Feng Kexin with concern, noticing her pallor.

"I’m fine," Feng Kexin forced a smile, clearly still shaken.

Song Xiaodong saw the body in an old warehouse. It was a man in his thirties, not particularly tall, with an unremarkable Chinese face—one that could easily blend into a crowd without drawing attention.

"I’ve checked the body. Aside from some cash, there’s nothing useful on him," Shen Ning informed him.

Song Xiaodong nodded, knowing there was no further need for him to check. "Another failure for them. Your identity is probably compromised. Using Kexin as bait isn’t a safe play anymore."

Shen Ning mused, "What confuses me is that such assassins are difficult to cultivate, but this person is clearly not from a professional killer organization. It must be a special power behind this, but such a powerful entity shouldn’t be hiding. I suspect there is an organization acting under a façade of normalcy, doing dirty deeds in secret."

That remark sparked something in Song Xiaodong, "That’s quite possible. In that case, the organization must be very powerful, with a strong sense of unity and cohesion."

Shen Ning nodded, "Exactly. I’ll have Xu Hao look into it."

Song Xiaodong agreed, and after a moment of thought, he added, "Protect Kexin openly from now on. If they know you’re here, they’ll have to think twice before making a move. At the very least, it’ll deter them from acting rashly for a while."
