Chapter 372: Chapter 373: Buy One Get One Free Deal
Song Xiaodong returned to the Human Resources department, and everyone was waiting for him, all with anxious looks on their faces.
"Don’t worry, everyone, it’s all good, I’m still the deputy manager here," Song Xiaodong briefly assured them, which immediately prompted cheers from the crowd.
Although Song Xiaodong hadn’t been in the HR department for long, and hadn’t had much interaction with the general staff, from his first day refusing to do favors, to just moments ago beating up Zhao Dongliang, he had quickly become an idol in everyone’s hearts.
What really won everyone over was how Song Xiaodong had their backs, which is exactly what every employee hopes for in a good leader. Now that Song Xiaodong had beaten up Zhao Dongliang, the most arrogant person in the company, without any repercussions, everyone’s admiration for him soared to new heights.
Back in his own office, Su Yao said with a smile, "Dongzi, your prestige really is getting higher and higher. I’m afraid it won’t be long before the position of HR manager is yours."
Song Xiaodong smiled slightly and said, "I’m just here to have some fun. Manager, deputy manager, I don’t care about that."
Su Yao pouted and said, "Do you know how many people would spit blood if they heard you say that? You have to understand how many people spend their whole lives just for a promotion and a raise, and here you are, not caring at all. It really is infuriating."
Song Xiaodong chuckled dryly and replied, "We have different pursuits, don’t we? I still prefer a relaxed and comfortable life. This kind of cutthroat workplace, I really don’t like it."
"Anyway, I don’t care, if you’re thinking of leaving the company, then you have to make sure I’m taken care of first; otherwise, I’ll have to stick to you."
"Haha, no problem, that’s a given," he laughed.
It was clear that Su Yao was now chatting with Song Xiaodong in a much more casual manner, calling him Dongzi much more often than she did deputy manager.
In the afternoon, around two, a person came to Song Xiaodong’s office—it was Wang Chenggui, the old classmate.
"Chenggui, you’re here, just got back from a business trip?" Song Xiaodong greeted Wang Chenggui with a smile and invited him in.
Wang Chenggui twitched the corner of his mouth, glanced at Song Xiaodong, and then at Su Yao, before chuckling bitterly and saying, "It really is you, I... Dongzi, about last time, I... don’t take it to heart, alright?"
Seeing Wang Chenggui’s obviously anxious demeanor, Song Xiaodong smiled and patted his shoulder, saying, "We’re old classmates, you don’t have to be so scared, as if I would retaliate against you."
Wang Chenggui forced a smile, "I really didn’t expect you could come work at our company. It’s... the other classmates said things that influenced me, and it’s on me for being shallow."
At this point, Su Yao chimed in with a laugh, "Chenggui, don’t be so hard on yourself. Dongzi isn’t that kind of person. Not just you, even I, after becoming his secretary, only then did I realize what he was really like. This guy loves playing the fool to catch the wise."
Wang Chenggui said awkwardly, "Exactly, he played it well, totally had me fooled. To think, when I first saw Dongzi in the company lobby, I was showing off, and now I’m really embarrassed."
Su Yao said with a laugh, "Ah, Chenggui, there’s no need to talk like that, it’s uncomfortable to listen to. If you’re here to discuss business, that attitude is fine, but if it’s a personal chat, let’s just drop it, right? We are old classmates, after all."
Although Wang Chenggui also wanted to act as relaxed as Su Yao, having been in the company for so long, the hierarchy had become deeply ingrained in him. Song Xiaodong being a deputy manager of HR and him just a low-level employee, he really didn’t have the confidence to be so informal with Song Xiaodong.
After chatting for a few moments, someone came looking for Song Xiaodong, so Wang Chenggui took his leave.
Outside Song Xiaodong’s office, Wang Chenggui mulled over his suspicions. Su Yao was speaking to Song Xiaodong with such ease; could it be that she was now with Song Xiaodong?
It was entirely possible. "If there’s work, the secretary does it, if there’s no work, the boss has the secretary," was almost an unwritten rule in offices, especially considering the casual manner between Su Yao and Song Xiaodong. Wang Chenggui couldn’t help but think this way.
He felt somewhat contemptuous of Su Yao’s shifting affections, but then again, Song Xiaodong’s current position was undeniable, and one couldn’t help but be envious. Reflecting on how he had mocked Song Xiaodong not so long ago, and how he now had to suck up to him—life was truly filled with wild ups and downs, utterly unpredictable.
After work, Song Xiaodong strolled leisurely home and noticed that two guys were following him at a not-too-close distance. Their tracking abilities were horribly amateurish; even an ordinary person could have spotted them with just a bit of attention, let alone someone like Xiaodong.
Using just his heels to think, Xiaodong knew instantly that these two fools must have been sent by Yue Dongliang, who clearly hadn’t given up and was still out to get him.
Xiaodong didn’t bother with the two men; he was curious to see what they were up to.
However, after he entered his residential complex, the two did not follow. They obviously just wanted to find out in which complex he lived.
Xiaodong went straight home where Miao Xuanxuan and Xiao Yingying were sitting on the living room sofa, seemingly on very good terms.
"Brother-in-law, you’re back!" Miao Xuanxuan immediately jumped up and rushed towards Song Xiaodong, giving him a hug and planting a "mwah" on his cheek.
Xiaodong was a bit bewildered by Miao Xuanxuan’s sudden burst of enthusiasm. What’s this about? Why has she suddenly become so warm?
"Xuanxuan, you..." Xiaodong’s eyes widened as he looked at Miao Xuanxuan, not even knowing where to place his hands.
"Hey, Miao Xuanxuan, you’re not Dongzi’s girlfriend, what are you doing?" Xiao Yingying came over as well, pouting her lips and asking.
Miao Xuanxuan replied with pride, "Don’t you know the saying? Half of a sister-in-law’s butt belongs to her brother-in-law."
"What? Where did that come from?" Xiao Yingying was confused, frowning her delicate brows.
"It just means that brothers-in-law often have something going on with their sisters-in-law." Xuanxuan said, hugging Song Xiaodong without letting go, and provocatively eyeing Yingying.
Something clicked in Xiaodong’s mind, and he instantly understood what Miao Xuanxuan meant. She was clearly fighting for Miao Qingqing’s sake, and he had to admit... he really liked this kind of struggle, at the very least it allowed him to be closer to Miao Xuanxuan.
Without hesitation, he hugged Miao Xuanxuan back and kissed her cheek in return, saying, "Xuanxuan is right, I rather enjoy this ’leg’."
He felt incredibly smug inside. If Miao Xuanxuan kept this up, then he would gladly accept Miao Qingqing as his girlfriend—this was truly a buy one, get one free bargain.
