Chapter 775: 775. Husband and wife are like birds in the same forest; when disaster strikes, they fly away separately_1

Elly Campbell’s eyes narrowed slightly upon hearing these words, and after hesitating for a moment, she spoke:

"What if... we get a divorce? I can take our son far away from you, so it won’t be dangerous anymore..."

As her voice trailed off, Adam Jones said sternly, "You dare!"

"Husband and wife are like birds of the same forest, who fly their separate ways when disaster strikes."

Elly dismissed his touch irritably, which always took advantage of her, and stated her case as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Upon hearing this, Adam huffed discontentedly and wrapped his arms around Elly even tighter.

"I won’t let you leave me. No matter how dangerous it might be beside me, I will always protect you with everything I have, the first moment I can. The only way they could hurt you is if I were already dead."

He spoke with an unusual seriousness that even if Elly had wanted to joke, she could not find any lighthearted banter to come back with just then.

"Besides, my side is the most dangerous, but at the same time, it’s the safest place. No one will hurt you and our child beside me, not even by a hair’s breadth."

He placed his hand on his abdomen, shifted his body slightly, turned to look straight into her eyes, and said,

"Elly, I’m telling you all this not to make you leave my side, but to make you more aware and self-protecting just in case. But I will do my utmost to keep you safe, not to send you away from me because of some unknown threat."

Elly raised an eyebrow and huffed lightly, looking quite satisfied.

"That’s more like it."

She remembered that back in the United States when she was a student, she had known a classmate whose boyfriend was a gang leader. He had quite a few enemies due to certain issues.

That boss claimed he did everything for her protection, yet he deliberately flaunted his affection for other women, driving away the girlfriend he deeply loved.

He thought that by doing so, his enemies wouldn’t target his girlfriend and wouldn’t use her to threaten him, making her safe.

But what he didn’t realize was that for his girlfriend, him showing affection for other women and driving her away hurt her much more than any physical harm his enemies could’ve inflicted on her.

In the name of love, he hurt her but considered himself noble, thinking only of her safety, without ever considering whether his girlfriend wanted or needed this type of protection.

To protect her this way, to put it bluntly, simply meant he did not trust his own ability to keep his loved one safe.

Latterly, after the boss had dealt with all his enemies, her classmate had already found her Prince Charming, and she and that gang leader had completely missed their chance.

In Elly’s view, that boss deserved no sympathy, one might even say it served him right.

So, when Elly heard Adam speak of such matters just now, she subconsciously thought of her American classmate’s real-life experience. If she found out that Adam dared to "protect" her in a similar way,

she wouldn’t need his protection. In that case, she would just take William Campbell and move far, far away, making sure that Adam could never find them for the rest of his life.

Fortunately, her island lord’s response did not disappoint her.

However, Adam Jones had no idea that Elly’s mind was filled with so many thoughts at that moment. Seeing her looking pleased, he suddenly felt a chill run down his spine, vaguely feeling as if he had just returned from a brush with death.

After tonight’s events, especially the wound that Adam had sustained, he felt weak even though the injury was not fatal. After talking with Elly for a while, he drifted off to sleep, feeling groggy.
