Chapter 78: Chapter 46: Center × More Center

The underground passage where Su Xiao was located wasn’t particularly wide, only about three meters, allowing at most four ghouls to attack simultaneously, which eased his pressure.

Four ghouls bared their teeth and claws, lunging at Su Xiao. Strangely, they didn’t use their Heko.

Now wasn’t the time for Su Xiao to think too much. Even if these ghouls didn’t use their Heko, they were still troublesome.

Su Xiao gripped Dragon Slash tightly with both hands, slashing out a few white lines.

"Puchi, puchi."

Several arms were severed, and the ghouls in front of Su Xiao let out successive screams of agony.

Grip the knife, horizontal slash!

With one sweep, he sliced through the throats of several ghouls in front of him, causing blood to spurt out. The timing of this stroke was incredibly precise.

The four ghouls in front fell, but those from the rear instantly filled their place, not giving him a moment to breathe.

Su Xiao’s mind was highly focused, and he immediately struck the newly-replaced ghouls with his long knife.

Flesh and blood flew, limbs scattered, and in less than two minutes, Su Xiao had created a mound of corpses in front of him.

Noticing this situation, Su Xiao immediately leaped onto the corpse pile.

Though the pile was somewhat soft, making his footing unstable, if he didn’t stand on it, the ghouls would attack from above.

Standing atop the corpse pile, he held a vantage point, dominating the battle.

The sounds of combat and the roars of the ghouls merged into one within the passage.

Five minutes had passed since the battle began, and Su Xiao hadn’t seen any ghouls use their Heko.

It seemed these ghouls either couldn’t use Heko or didn’t have it at all.

In contrast, these ghouls were very strong, with high physical defense, and in a short time, Dragon Slash’s durability had dropped by three points.

Now the durability of Dragon Slash was 28/40. If this battle continued for over two hours, Dragon Slash’s durability might be depleted.

Powerless, Su Xiao could only activate Blue Steel Shadow. He currently had 253 mana points, allowing Blue Steel Shadow to last for two hours.

Pale blue arcs spread across the surface of Dragon Slash, reducing the difficulty in cutting through the enemy’s flesh significantly.

As Su Xiao cleaved a ghoul in half, another ghoul suddenly leapt into the air from afar, pouncing towards him.

Su Xiao kicked a ghoul in front of him, sending it flying, and struck upward with his long knife.

The pouncing ghoul in mid-air had a part of its head sliced off; he ignored it afterward.

Just as he was about to kill another ghoul, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his calf.

Looking down, it was the ghoul with part of its head severed, biting into his calf.

Previously, these ghouls felt to Su Xiao like they had great strength and resilient flesh.

Now, he had to add another trait: tenacious life energy.

Su Xiao fiercely lifted his calf, tearing off several rotten teeth from the biting ghoul.

Ruthlessly stepping on the head of the ghoul, white liquid splattered out; the already cleaved skull was crushed underfoot.

In that brief moment, a ghoul had already rushed to him.

Su Xiao’s face changed; the distance was too close.

But this didn’t trouble him; adaptability in battle was key. He flipped Dragon Slash in his hand, the hilt facing forward.

The hilt hammered into the face of the ghoul, causing it to scream and stagger back a few steps.

Dragon Slash struck true, and the ghoul was slain.

"Bang."

A gunshot sounded from behind, and a ghoul closing in on Su Xiao was shot in the head.

Looking sideways, he saw Yuna holding a long gun; it was Yuna’s Quinque ’M.Red Moon’.

Realizing Yuna had long-range capabilities, Su Xiao felt somewhat relieved.

With the support of him and Arima Kishou, Yuna could exert strong combat effectiveness.

Arima Kishou was in a similar situation to Su Xiao, both standing atop corpses.

Yuna was positioned between the two piles of corpses, with one side being Su Xiao, and the other, Arima Kishou.

The mechanical slaughter began. Fighting multiple ghouls simultaneously, Su Xiao was inevitably injured, and some primitive ghouls wielded a type of black stone spear, hidden among many ghouls.

The ghouls wielding black stone spears were highly dangerous, but fortunately, they were few in number.

A bloody hole on Su Xiao’s thigh was caused by such a black stone spear.

"Jiu~Jiu~."

Two short shrieks emerged, from a ghoul leader always hiding in the distance.

After the short shrieks, all ghouls went berserk, hysterically pouncing on Su Xiao; this must have been the signal for an all-out attack.

The pressure suddenly increased, and Su Xiao could barely hold on.

Su Xiao, whose eyes were already beginning to glow red, roared angrily, slashing forward with all his might three times.

"Puchi, puchi, puchi."

After three strikes, the ghouls in front of Su Xiao were cleared in a small area.

The chaotic battle had been going on for nearly twenty minutes, the all-out combat causing stamina to deplete rapidly, and Su Xiao couldn’t hold out much longer.

Even if his attribute values had increased significantly, this kind of all-out battle could only last half an hour at most.

Su Xiao glanced sideways at Arima Kishou. Arima’s divine demeanor had disappeared, his glasses shattered, his entire body looking as though it had been soaked in a pool of blood.

"Jiu~~, Jiu~."

A long and a short shriek came, and the ghouls fighting with Su Xiao suddenly stopped, gradually retreating.

Su Xiao, heavy with breath, looked at the retreating ghouls with some confusion.

Looking around, the ground beneath him was covered with corpses, piled at least two meters high and stretching long into the passage.

The position between Su Xiao and Arima Kishou had widened to five or six meters. They only needed to ensure the ghouls didn’t break through, not needing to get too close.

The ghoul leader, full of hatred, stared at Su Xiao and Arima Kishou, its face painted with fish-shaped graffiti twitching now and then.

Perhaps because Su Xiao and Arima Kishou had killed too many primitive ghouls, the leader-like ghoul chose to retreat.

A mass of ghouls retreated to the sides of the passage, and Su Xiao did not pursue.

This group of mysterious beings was not something to be trifled with. If the battle continued for another ten minutes, he would be overwhelmed by the horde.

When those ghouls completely disappeared from sight, Su Xiao leaned against the wall, feeling bouts of weakness wash over him.

Arima Kishou was not much better off, using ’Sounding God’ to support himself.

"What should we do now?"

Yuna was full of energy as she had only been supporting the two from the center.

"We must leave immediately."

"We must leave immediately."

Su Xiao and Arima Kishou spoke simultaneously, causing Yuna to pause.

"The smell of blood here is too strong and might attract other ghouls."

Su Xiao lit a cigarette and struggled to stand upright.

"Return to the temporary division; this exploration is over."

Encountering primitive ghouls was a bit unexpected for Arima Kishou, prompting an early end to the exploration.

Yuna shrugged, having no objection.

The three began to head back in the direction they came, and after about ten minutes, they paused temporarily.

Su Xiao and Arima Kishou both needed rest, and Yuna stood guard with her Quinque.

Su Xiao sat leaning against the flesh wall; during the battle, he gained a total of 2670 CCG Contribution Points, not counting the ghouls’ Kakuhou.

He no longer considered those Kakuhou; if more ghouls appeared, he would die there.

....

At the previous battle site, after Su Xiao and Arima Kishou left, several ghouls approached slowly.

"Who is that new guy? He’s incredibly strong, almost like the White Death."

"Not sure, but we need to be cautious in the future. Tell the kids when we return to not leave the ’Central City’ for now."

These ghouls differed from the primitive ones; they wore normal clothing, albeit a bit worn, and could speak the human language.

One ghoul with a grim face looked at the vast amount of corpses and said:

"These not fully evolved beasts, there’s another breach somewhere; otherwise, they wouldn’t have come out."

"What do we do? The ’leader’ is not in Central City right now; she’s on the surface fighting with the CCG."

The ghouls went silent; eventually, they chose to leave, heading deeper into the 24th District.
