Chapter 54: Chapter 22: The Wolf Among the Sheep

Amidst the cacophony of music, eleven o’clock arrived.

"Snap~."

The auction hall’s lights flickered on and the music stopped.

The ghouls in the center of the venue stopped moving their bodies; some ghouls grumbled discontentedly, but no ghoul dared to cause trouble.

"Gentlemen, ladies, the auction is about to begin, please take your seats."

A voice with an odd accent came through, belonging to a ghoul host wearing a clown mask.

"Mr. Clown, are there any surprises tonight? The last auction left me quite dissatisfied."

A ghoul dressed as a noblewoman spoke up.

All the ghouls present wore masks since ghouls cannot have their faces recognized by humans. The same goes between ghouls themselves.

If two ghouls had a feud and one knew the other’s identity, reporting to the CCG would likely mean doom for the reported ghoul.

Most ghouls are like mice in the sewers, hiding in darkness.

However, there are exceptions, such as Takatsuki Sen, a fancy young daredevil who is both the leader of the Bronze Tree and a novelist, exposing herself to the public.

"Enough with the chatter. Tonight’s items will definitely satisfy everyone, so...."

Just as the host was about to announce the start of the auction, Su Xiao pressed his Bluetooth earpiece.

"Action."

As soon as Su Xiao spoke, a few ghouls around him looked at him cautiously and took a few steps back.

"What did that guy just say?"

"He just said ’action’, something’s off about this guy, kill him."

"He’s not a ghoul investigator, is he? I’m out of here."

Su Xiao’s single word ’action’ caused a small area in the auction hall to boil over.

No wonder these ghouls are like this, years of CCG hunts have left them somewhat neurotic.

Tension spread through the auction hall; the ghoul host on stage also noticed something was wrong.

"Snap!"

All the lights in the auction venue abruptly went out, leaving the place in complete darkness.

Screams, roars, and the sound of tables and chairs toppling over followed one after another.

Su Xiao’s vision was just as black, but he remained completely calm, his expression serene.

Suddenly, a device resembling a ’monocular’ appeared in his hand. He nonchalantly placed it on his head, and his vision returned.

Although it was only in his right eye and everything appeared green, he had regained his sight.

Su Xiao had prepared night vision goggles and issued the command earlier to cut off the auction hall’s power as soon as the action began.

The Dragon Slash appeared in his hand. Su Xiao walked slowly towards a ghoul, placing the blade against the ghoul’s neck.

The ghoul was completely unaware, simply stretching both hands forward, body slightly bent, groping blindly through the air.

Su Xiao was testing whether the ghoul’s Red Eye had night vision capabilities.

Obviously, ghouls did not possess such abilities.

He pulled the Dragon Slash, the blade slicing through flesh, making a faint sound as blood spurted forth.

The eyes of the ghoul suddenly widened, uttering a choking sound from its throat before collapsing a few seconds later.

In the utterly dark auction hall, Su Xiao, wearing night vision goggles, was like a hungry wolf mixed into a flock of sheep.

Moving among the ghouls, the Dragon Slash flickered with trails of blade light.

"Splat, splat..."

The sound of sharp blades slicing through flesh and blood came one after another, as ghoul after ghoul fell, blood staining the path Su Xiao walked.

The chaos of the auction hall masked Su Xiao’s actions.

In just a few seconds, more than twenty ghouls had fallen under Su Xiao’s blade.

The auction hall was a semi-enclosed space, and the rich scent of blood spread, alerting the other ghouls.

"What’s going on, the smell of blood."

"This is a CCG trap, run."

"I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die!!"

The auction hall had turned into a boiling pot, with over a hundred ghouls running about haphazardly.

Some ghouls with extreme tempers released their Heko, swinging wildly, killing any ghouls who dared to approach them by mistake.

The speed of death and injury among the ghouls increased, and Su Xiao knew time was short. The ghouls couldn’t possibly let him slaughter them at will.

Su Xiao moved emotionlessly through the crowd, ghouls falling one after another.

Blood splattered on his cheeks, but he didn’t care at all.

Would killing ghouls cause psychological pressure? Perhaps it would for others.

But in Reincarnation Paradise, it’s you or me; between killing and being killed, Su Xiao chose to wield his blade.

Blood and limbs flew, Su Xiao killing until his own eyes started to glow red.

"Bang!" A glass bottle shattered, a blaze whooshing up into the air.

The ghoul host on the stage, having found a bottle of strong liquor somewhere, had fashioned it into a makeshift incendiary bomb and shattered it on the ground.

This might have been leftover liquor from a daytime auction; ghouls wouldn’t be auctioning liquor.

The flames illuminated the entire auction hall, dispelling the darkness in the room.

"Drip, drip."

Blood dripped from the tip of the Dragon Slash, and all the ghouls’ gazes turned to Su Xiao.

Around Su Xiao lay at least thirty ghouls, all slain with their throats cut, blood soaking the ground around him, forming a thin pool.

"Gulu."

A B-class ghoul swallowed, eyes full of terror.

As all the ghouls noticed Su Xiao, the first reaction wasn’t to attack him but to flee.

However, these ghouls quickly discovered that all exits of the auction hall were sealed.

This was by Su Xiao’s order; the people outside were merely a precaution. Even though he was now the captain of the Extermination Squad, he could only get a small share of the Contribution Value for ghouls killed by other CCG members.

Thus, to quickly rise to First-Class Investigator, Su Xiao had to kill the enemy himself.

All exits were blocked, and through the gaps, the ghouls saw a large group of investigators outside, driving the ghouls present into madness.

"What do we do, it’s over, we’re dead today."

"Run, that guy with the knife is coming up."

The scene turned even more chaotic, Su Xiao stabbing through a ghoul’s throat, gaining points, the ghoul laying dead on the ground.

Not all ghouls were fleeing; there were two S-Level ghouls present, one the host wearing a clown mask, the other standing before Su Xiao.

Wearing a pig-head mask, with a fat body, the S-Level ghoul in front of Su Xiao was at least three hundred pounds, his body round, like a ball.

"You, you’re human."

The fat ghoul’s Heko was Armor Heko, with the Kakuhou located at the shoulder. Once the Heko appeared, the fat ghoul was like he had donned half a suit of armor.

This guy clearly could take a beating; he wasn’t fast, but thick-skinned.

Su Xiao charged forward with his knife, the fat ghoul roaring as it rushed towards him.

The two closed quickly; Su Xiao’s steps were agile, the fat ghoul like a heavy tank, causing the ground to slightly tremble as it ran.

"Die!"

The fat ghoul lowered its head, charging at Su Xiao. Su Xiao suddenly stopped, his focus sharp.

With a deft step, Su Xiao easily dodged the fat ghoul’s charge, his long knife slashing at the ghoul’s lower body.

"Splat."

A fat leg hit the ground; Su Xiao didn’t exert much force, simply borrowing the fat ghoul’s momentum.

A pig-like scream echoed, and the fat ghoul thudded to the ground.

Su Xiao quickly dashed forward, planting a foot on the fat ghoul’s back, pressing Dragon Slash’s tip to the ghoul’s nape.

"No, no~, please, don’t...."

The icy, sharp touch on its nape rendered the fat ghoul unable to speak properly.

"Splat." The long knife plunged into the brain, with Su Xiao hesitating not at all.

Pressing down on the fat ghoul with his foot, he clearly felt the ghoul’s body convulsing.

A light green treasure box floated up from the fat ghoul’s corpse, and seeing the box, Su Xiao raised an eyebrow.

How lucky, killing an S-Level ghoul actually got him a green treasure chest.

Putting away the treasure chest, Su Xiao turned his gaze to the second S-ghoul present, the clown-masked host.

Noticing Su Xiao’s gaze, the clown-masked ghoul quickly spoke.

"Wait, I’m part of the Tsukiyama Family, you can’t kill me."
