Chapter 212 - 22: Imperial Capital

Chapter 212: Chapter 22: Imperial Capital

After marching south for two days, the temperature gradually rose.

The Empire was in autumn, and the early autumn weather did not feel scorching. The occasional cool breeze invigorated people.

Now, in a location deep within the Empire’s territory, the Imperial Capital was right ahead.

Finally arrived, the Imperial Capital was the main battlefield,

Gradually approaching the Imperial Capital, occasionally merchants were encountered on the main road. These merchants, upon seeing the army, hurriedly moved aside with their carts, heads lowered, not daring to look directly at the army.

But when they saw the blue-haired female General at the front of the line, the merchants were noticeably surprised.

"General Esdeath has returned. Wasn’t she heading to the Extreme North battlefield?"

"Could it be..."

A merchant dared not continue speaking.

"Don’t talk nonsense. Look at the army’s demeanor. Does this look like a defeated army? It’s clearly a triumphant return."

"But such a large-scale battle should have taken at least six months to a year."

The merchants whispered, their previous fear and resentment completely dissipated.

If there was an army in the Imperial Capital that had the support of the common people, it had to be this one.

The direction of the army’s march was not within the Imperial Capital but towards the military camp on the outskirts. The news of the grand victory in the Extreme North had already returned, and three commanders were waiting patiently for Esdeath’s return at the camp. These three were Esdeath’s confidants, all Imperial Tool Users, collectively known as the Three Beast Soldiers.

Among the three was an elder, a robust man, and a cute girl?

The elder dressed like a butler, named Liwa, was a former General of the Empire who was imprisoned for offending the nobility. Later, he was saved by Esdeath and his loyalty points were extremely high. His Imperial Tool was ’Water Dragon Relying on Black Horse Forest’, a ring-shaped Imperial Tool capable of manipulating any liquid.

The robust man was named Daidas, a battle madman. His Imperial Tool was called ’Two-handed Axe, Berwark’. The two axes were usually one and could be separated from the middle. Once thrown, as long as the axe had power, it would track the enemy.

The last ’girl’ dressed as a cute girl was named Niu. Although in a cute girl guise, this guy was a *cute girl, meaning a man wearing women’s clothing.

Niu’s Imperial Tool was ’Military Music Dream, Scream’, an Imperial Tool in the form of a flute. Playing different music could control the enemy’s emotions and physical states, a support-type Imperial Tool.

The three stood straight in front of the military camp. Upon seeing Esdeath’s figure, they immediately approached.

"General, you have worked hard along the way. Subordinates have prepared a welcome banquet for you."

Elder Liwa spoke, bending forward with a hand over his chest, wearing a white glove, dressed like a butler. He was the captain of the Three Beast Soldiers.

"The banquet is not needed right now. I’ll take you to meet the Little Emperor in a while, but first let me introduce a colleague to you."

The Three Beast Soldiers were a little puzzled.

"Colleague? Did the General recruit talent from the Extreme North?"

"Yes, we consider it a treasure-collecting moment. We’ve taken in a recruit from another country’s Anbu."

Upon hearing Esdeath’s words, elder Liwa’s brow furrowed slightly. Members of the Assassination Squad generally had complex backgrounds.

However, Liwa would not say anything. This was Esdeath’s will, and he would not oppose it.

"I’ll say in advance, this colleague of yours is one of those top-level Assassination Squad members. I had a confrontation with him before, and in terms of individual combat power, he might not be weaker than me."

The Three Beast Soldiers were startled, gazing in a daze at Esdeath.

"Strength... not weaker than you, General?"

*Cute girl Niu swallowed a gulp, his voice somewhat neutral.

"Bai Ye."

Esdeath called out towards the back of the army, and the Three Beast Soldiers focused their gaze in that direction.

A man with black hair and black pupils, with a long knife on his waist, approached. His build was not robust, yet he gave off a sharp impression.

"This is your future colleague, Bai Ye."

Esdeath looked at Su Xiao.

"These three are also my subordinates."

"Hmm."

Su Xiao responded, having already recognized the three.

Named the Three Beast Soldiers, although their prowess was not weak, all three perished in a subsequent mission. Among them, the robust man died most swiftly, killed within less than five minutes of his appearance.

"Be mindful of your tone when speaking to the General."

Elder Liwa spoke, his gaze unfriendly.

"Don’t worry about it. Bai Ye’s nature is just like this. Members raised by top-level assassination units all have personality defects. His is perhaps the most normal."

"I was presumptuous, General."

Liwa bowed again.

Su Xiao paid no heed to Liwa’s tone. Why make a fuss with someone who perished upon their first appearance?

"It’s getting late. Let’s go meet His Majesty."

The four boarded a carriage heading to the Imperial Capital. The Imperial Capital covered a large area, a major city with a tiered structure, progressively higher towards the center.

The center of the Imperial Capital was the Royal Palace, a city within a city. That showed how vast the Royal Palace’s domain was.

The entire Royal Palace was a cumbersome circular shape, with upward-pointing tiered buildings. The highest points were even over a hundred meters tall.

The carriage traversed the Imperial Capital. There were quite a few pedestrians on the Imperial Capital’s streets, dressed elegantly. This was a nation’s capital, and economic prosperity was only natural.

The sun hung listlessly on the horizon, and the entire Imperial Capital was enveloped in the dusky glow of twilight, with the time already at six in the evening.

The carriage halted before the Royal Palace. This should have been a heavily guarded place, but after recognizing the emblem on the carriage, the guards at the gate merely inquired briefly and allowed passage, requiring no appearance from Esdeath.

The Royal Palace was extensive, and after a short ride, the carriage arrived in front of the Grand Hall of the palace.

This somewhat surprised Su Xiao. How could a General’s carriage draw right up to the Grand Hall? Shouldn’t they disembark outside the palace and walk to the hall?

It seemed the Little Emperor was less competent than anticipated, as Esdeath hardly cared about him.

Disembarking and entering the hall, the hall was quite majestic, with red carpets laid across the floor, and a golden-constructed seat at the innermost side, elevated, which was the Emperor’s desk.

A boy appearing to be thirteen or fourteen sat on the seat. This was the Little Emperor.

The Little Emperor was thin and weak, looking somewhat malnourished. His entire appearance, in purple clothes, was quite jarring, making him appear rather effeminate.

Though an Emperor, he utterly lacked any sense of majesty. Su Xiao thought he seemed a very insubstantial youth.

Esdeath walked with the four into the hall, stopping a few meters before the Little Emperor, then kneeling on one knee.

Rather than kneeling, it would be more accurate to say Esdeath was in a half-squat, as the kneeling leg did not touch the ground. This stance indicated many things.

The Little Emperor’s expression remained unchanged, as if this was the norm.

Su Xiao mimicked the posture, half-squatting but definitely not kneeling.

He was already considering whether to seize the Little Emperor by force, perceiving the youth as a pushover.

Beside the Little Emperor stood an obese elder with a big beard.

The obese middle-aged man’s hair and beard were all white, yet due to the fat causing his skin to lack wrinkles, his plumpness displayed no signs of age. If not for the white hair, some might believe he was middle-aged.

This obese elder was the Chancellor, who controlled the Little Emperor.

The Chancellor held a plate of meat in his hand, standing by the Little Emperor with a bulging belly. The meat was for his own consumption, not for the Little Emperor.

After initially assessing the situation, Su Xiao decided to abandon the idea. He wasn’t sure if the key was on the Little Emperor, requiring a more strategic plan.
