Chapter 179: Chapter 38: Dangerous ’Companion
Early the next morning, Su Xiao left the Survey Corps, ostensibly for post-war processing.
Although he’s currently under suspicion, Su Xiao’s previous actions had always been loyal to the Survey Corps, and he had significantly contributed to sealing the breach.
Quickly walking through the streets, he could see bodies wrapped in white cloth along the roadside. The hot weather would cause these bodies to decay quickly, and if not dealt with promptly, a plague could break out within a week.
Su Xiao’s target was the gathering place of the Training Squad. After last night’s discussion, the Survey Corps decided to gather the members of the 104th Training Squad.
In a field, a large group of Training Squad members was gathered together, including Mikasa, Armin, and others.
Su Xiao’s gaze swept across the people on the field and did not see the figures of Ani, Reiner Braun, and Bertholdt Hoover among them.
It seems his words from before had an effect; the three had hidden themselves, which was good news.
One thing Su Xiao could be certain of is that the three would definitely return within the walls, as they had not yet completed their mission.
By hiding for now, they would not be suspected. The bodies of the fallen had not yet been fully processed, and the trio would temporarily be accounted among the casualties.
Su Xiao left the field and began strolling along the streets of the town, intentionally placing the sheathed Dragon Slash at his waist to make his identity easier to recognize.
After wandering for three hours, Su Xiao’s eyes suddenly turned sharp; someone was following him.
After roughly discerning the follower’s physique and appearance, Su Xiao’s pace began to quicken.
He intentionally moved toward less crowded areas until he entered a small alley.
"Come out, if you’re warriors, stop sneaking around."
Su Xiao called out in a low voice, but there was no movement around.
"Thinking of being cautious now? If I hadn’t helped you out yesterday, you would now be wanted fugitives within the walls; dreaming of returning ’home’ is just foolish."
Su Xiao’s words finally touched the nerves of the followers, and two hooded figures in gray blocked the exit of the alley.
"Who are you?"
"A supporting companion, an experimental soldier outside the unit."
"Experimental soldier?"
One of the stout figures spoke.
"Do you think ordinary humans could be as strong as I am? I didn’t go too hard on Ani. She can no longer stay hidden within the walls, yet she exposed herself directly in front of me. If it had been someone else, all three of you would be dead."
Reiner Braun removed his hood, excitement showing in his eyes.
"Are you really a comrade? It’s been so long...."
"Don’t come any closer. After all these years, are you still a Marleyan? Or that young Deputy Warrior Captain?"
"Absolutely!"
Reiner Braun made a salute different from those within the walls, standing straight and gaze firm.
Reiner Braun was muscular, with short blond hair, exuding a mature and composed demeanor. His father was Marleyan, his mother an Eldian. His true identity was the Armored Titan.
"Reiner, can we really trust him?"
Beside Reiner, ’Bertholdt Hoover’ spoke. Bertholdt was thinner than Reiner and looked less spirited. His unusual sleeping posture often made him the subject of pranks in the Training Squad.
His true identity was the Colossal Titan.
Bertholdt was an even less competent spy, often indecisive and frequently forgetful of his mission.
"Things have progressed to this extent, and he knew our identities from the start, knew about Marley, even my position as Deputy Warrior Captain, so he’s temporarily trustworthy."
Reiner Braun walked up to Su Xiao and carefully examined his face.
"What’s your warrior number?"
"TK·317."
Su Xiao randomly made up a number based on the intelligence he got from the original story. "TK" is in Marleyan.
"A number that far ahead?"
"Experimental soldiers are rare. There were about 7,000 people in my cohort, but only three survived."
Reiner Braun had been away from the ’Marley Empire’ for too long; he barely understood Su Xiao’s words.
"Has the Empire’s technology advanced to this degree? It’s truly reassuring."
Su Xiao affectionately patted Reiner Braun on the shoulder.
"How long is the time limit on your Power of Giant?"
Reiner Braun’s expression tightened, but his trust in Su Xiao grew.
"Not many years left. The mission still seems far off, but why did you help those within the walls to seal the breach before?"
Reiner Braun posed a tricky question. If Su Xiao didn’t answer well, all his previous efforts would be in vain.
"Because I discovered that the Progenitor Titan’s Power is not with the Inner Wall Royal Family."
Su Xiao’s words left ’Reiner Braun’ and ’Bertholdt’ astonished.
"How can that be, then...."
"The Progenitor Titan’s Power is within Eren. I can confirm that; I sensed it."
Reiner Braun and Bertholdt exchanged a glance, eyes filled with joy.
If they obtained the Progenitor Titan’s Power, they wouldn’t need to breach the walls. By directly seizing the Progenitor Titan’s Power, the ’Marley Empire’ would attack afterward.
"How can you perceive it?"
"I was created with the tactical value of sensing the Power of Giant. Inside Eren’s body are two Powers of Giant: the ’Attack Titan’s Power’ and the ’Progenitor Titan’s Power.’
What about Zeke? We haven’t been able to contact him."
Su Xiao dropped a bombshell, mentioning the trio’s other companion, Beast Titan·Jieke.
This further increased Reiner Braun’s trust in Su Xiao.
"Zeke is outside the walls; we haven’t been in contact with him for a long time either."
"Is that so? We now need to carefully consider our next plan. We don’t need to focus on breaching the walls anymore; it’s too inefficient. Compared to breaching the walls, I favor capturing Eren.
Oh, and if the timing is right, ’Historia’ also needs to be captured; that’s been instructed from above."
This time not only Reiner Braun but Bertholdt also approached warmly; Su Xiao knew all about their operations.
"How is our hometown now? Changed much?"
"Greatly, but the war with the Middle East Alliance continues, and resources grow scarcer."
The Middle East Alliance was a powerful force from Reiner Braun’s hometown and was currently at war with the Marley Empire.
"Sigh~." Reiner Braun sighed and continued:
"We must accelerate our actions. There are plenty of resources here; the coal and iron mines outside the walls are largely untapped."
Su Xiao used the information he had to chat with Reiner Braun and Bertholdt, maintaining control over the conversation and avoiding topics he didn’t understand.
The more they talked, the more Reiner Braun and Bertholdt felt close to Su Xiao, and their doubts were long gone.
"We can’t delay any further, now that things have developed to this stage. Is Ani outside the walls?"
"Yes, Ani exposed her identity in front of you, so she’s temporarily hiding outside the walls."
"Good. Now we need a trigger. Reiner, find a way to contact Ani, and you two don’t need to hide anymore. Pretend to be injured, and then..."
Reiner Braun and Bertholdt listened earnestly.
"If we act quickly, the plan should be easy to succeed. Let’s contact Ani now; when is it set?"
"As soon as possible, this afternoon. I can feel Eren gradually awakening the Progenitor Titan’s Power."
Once Su Xiao confirmed the plan, both nodded.
"Reiner, I know you and Eren are quite close; don’t let emotions interfere."
"Alright... Alright."
Finishing their conversation, ’Reiner’ and ’Bertholdt’ left the alley, their faces filled with an undeniable joy.
Watching the two depart, a smile gradually surfaced on Su Xiao’s face.
"A world outside the walls, how exciting."
Su Xiao also left the alley; there were still things he needed to prepare.
