Chapter 25: Escape

The teenage girl revealed an incredulous expression as her ears finally registered Ezekiel’s words, as though she had never expected such a reply.

Recognizing the expression on her face, the mechanic frowned. "Gods, how stuck up can you be? You’ve had so many things handed to you on a silver platter that a single rejection can provoke such an expression?"

"Do-do you not know who I am?" The girl stuttered, still surprised at Ezekiel’s unhesitant response.

The latter’s glance grew even more annoyed as he heard this. "What, you’re some type of princess?" He paused upon speaking those words, his eyes narrowing as he finally took the time to properly observe her features. The girl possessed black hair with bright ruby eyes, her face structured quite beautifully—one couldn’t expect to see such beauty from a normal commoner from the kingdom. Add that to the fact that she had a servant as she escaped the mines earlier, though he had un-hesitantly betrayed her.

"N-no. How could I be a princess?" She nervously stuttered while shaking her head wildly. "I am the daughter of an Earl."

"And?"

"And..." The girl’s eyes suddenly lit up as she quickly revealed her only bargaining chip. "If I return safely to my father, he would be able to grant you all passage to the academy within a mana transporter, blessed with our family’s crest. You guys are going there too, right? You’ll be able to follow me, and as a noble owned transporter, you would receive less obstruction on your way to the academy."

The mechanic’s eyes widened in surprise as he glanced at the girl. "That could actually work." Moreover such a change would throw off whoever was aiming to find the three of them, after all, they would never be able to assume that Ezekiel and his friends somehow managed to receive the help of another Earl family.

"Seems I have no choice but to rescue your privileged self." Ezekiel burst forward, catching the girl before carrying her while he flew towards the exit of the cave, Vahn and Yuri trailing behind him.

She yelped in surprise as she felt the wind sharply brush against her while she was hefted on the mechanic’s shoulder. "Your armor... can’t you handle me more comfortably?"

The latter’s voice rang out through his speaker. "Well excuse me, your highness. But my Battlesuit was only designed for the sole purpose of saving myself, and not carrying privileged princesses."

The girl gritted her teeth in annoyance while flaying about on Ezekiel’s shoulder. "I’m not a privileged noble, my name is Anna. I can fight just as much as you can."

Vahn retorted. "I don’t see you helping in any way at the moment. I would say you are quite naïve actually."

Yuri nodded, agreeing with her brother. "You must be quite sheltered if you could stupidly trust three strangers just after being betrayed by your servant."

Their response left Anna blushing in embarrassment once more. "I... I drained all my mana trying to run away from the fight earlier. I don’t have any other choice but to trust you three."

The three kept silent after listening to her words, knowing she was right.

They didn’t need to spend much time within the ore mine, Ezekiel had set camp very close to the entrance after all.

The four released a sigh of relief upon seeing the bright light of the sun shine down on them. They all quickly composed themselves, knowing that they weren’t fully out of harm yet. By now, Anna had recovered a sliver of her mana, but she didn’t know any subtle methods of flight, not to mention that even if she did, it would probably not last long with the meager mana she had managed to recover. So she could only begrudgingly stay on Ezekiel’s shoulder, carried about like a sack.

The three in their Battlesuit didn’t dare to move at their fastest speed. The whirring sounds of his Windchasers and the loud combustion of Psion energy could easily be heard by any powerful Awakened, regardless of whether they focused on auditory talents.

Unfortunately, their journey was fated to encounter hardship.

_

Large cluster of mana approaching.

_

(Ez!) Laura’s timely warning arrived as expected, causing the mechanic’s expression to harden. He could easily infer that whoever was that cluster of mana was the individual who seemed to be chasing after Nana.

’I know.’ Ezekiel’s eyes narrowed when he saw this. "Deploy the smoke."

Vahn and Yuri followed his orders immediately, releasing a fog of white gas that spread into the surroundings.

The next moment, the floor cracked slightly before bursting out with pieces of rocks, both large and small. A shadow jumped from within the hole before converging and displaying itself as a person. He was a male, standing at an intimidating 5 ft. and 6 inches. His eyes were a deep scarlet red while his blond hair spilled at the side of his neck. He wore a simple dark training garb, with red lines trailing at its edges.

"Fuck." The mechanic frowned before assuming a stance. "Vahn, Yuri." At his words, the two also entered their battle, ready to lay waste to any opponent that wished to take them on.

"Where are you cubs headed to?" The man in black chuckled. With his simple words, Ezekiel felt the wind, which seemed keen on caressing my skin, increase in temperature, as though he were standing before a volcano on its verge of eruption.

Ezekiel didn’t answer. He simply threw an item forward, unmoving as he watched it smash into pieces the moment it touched the man’s fiery fist. What the latter didn’t expect deeper though, was the high decibel sound that resounded from the shattered fragments that flew all about him.

The man stood stunned as he moved his arm up to feel the warm trail of liquid that escaped his ears. It seemed he had been injured, his mana shield hadn’t been configured to block out sound waves after all. ’By E rank brats?!’ Glaring down at the red that painted his fingers, a surge of anger built within his chest before he yelled out in outrage. "You insufferable maggots!"

The mechanic wordlessly flashed a middle finger at the cursing man....

... Then tucked his tail between his legs and dashed off with Vahn and Yuri at his side.
