Reincarnated as the Villain's Sister -
Chapter 76: Too proud for his own good
Chapter 76: Too proud for his own good
"I was peacefully ranking up in King of Glory when I got the call," Han Ming huffed. "Do you know how rare it is to find good teammates? I was playing to advance my rank! A match to advance my rank!! My little sister finally agreed to queue with me—and we were winning! Then I hear you got stabbed, so I disconnected. DISCONNECTED. And now she’s crying and calling me a traitor!"
Han Ming gawked. "What’s with that expression of yours?? Hello? Anyone home?? This is the part where you thank me for my sacrifice!"
Han Ming continued, "She said, ’Even Judas didn’t queue with Jesus and abandon him in the finals.’ Do you know how dramatic a fifteen-year-old girl can be?"
Wang Jingyuan ignored him and instead turned his head to ask Lu Qingyan, "How did that person find out."
Lu Qingyan blinked. "I texted him earlier, on the subway. You’re injured. I needed someone to send you home."
"I forgot to tell you," she added after a pause, shrinking a little under his gaze.
Han Ming finally caught a glimpse of the bandages on Wang Jingyuan’s arm.
He rushed over and stared at the wound like it personally offended him. "I told you not to go there anymore! What part of ’stay at the internet café and mind your own business’ did you not understand? It’s peaceful there. Air-conditioned! And no one’s trying to shank you over lunch money!"
He started pacing now, building momentum. "Brother Bald might pay more, yeah—but that place is a hive of scum and villainy. You’re too sharp-tongued and too hotheaded to survive that kind of chaos. You walk in looking for extra cash and leave horizontal!"
As soon as he finished speaking, he noticed that Wang Jingyuan’s expression was a little subtle.
Han Ming caught a glimpse of Lu Qingyan who was next to him before he suddenly closed his mouth.
Han Ming’s brain finally connected the dots. His gaze flicked to Lu Qingyan and then back to his friend.
Oh. Crap.
He almost forgot she didn’t know.
Jingyuan glanced away, clearly not wanting to explain himself.
Wang Jingyuan pursed his lips and then said, "I’m staying here to get the medicine, you send her back."
Han Ming checked his watch, any later and it would be dangerous for a girl to go home alone, "Okay."
Lu Qingyan promptly waved her hand, "No need, you should stay here and assist the wounded instead."
When Han Ming was still caught in a dilemma, Wang Jingyuan gave him a look.
Han Ming immediately realized that he wanted him to make his own decision, so he still decided to follow Lu Qingyan.
He comforted Lu Qingyan on the road, "It’s nothing, Wang Jingyuan has been living like this since he was a child. He’s living well even if he grew up a little barbarously, so don’t worry about him."
When they walked down the stairs of the hospital, she finally asked, "Is he really short of money?"
Han Ming was slightly taken back, then wrinkled his brows.
He seemed hesitant on whether to answer or not. Lu Qingyan saw his entanglement and understood his predicament, so she smiled and said, "It’s nothing, I was just casually asking.
He scratched his neck, obviously debating whether to spill the truth. But then he remembered something. That WeChat message from Lu Qingyan. The urgency in her voice when she asked him to help. How serious she sounded, even though they barely knew each other.
She seemed to be someone that was quite responsible.
Moreover, Han Ming had been holding these things in his heart for many years, frequently making him worried, so he really wanted to find someone to confide in.
Han Ming sped up a few steps and said to her, "Something happened to Brother Xing’s family in his early years."
He pursed his lips slightly and continued, "His mother had a heart issue. They had to pay a lot of hospital bills alone, later, his father was also scammed out of a large sum of money while doing business. Then not long after, his father found a new lover. He was originally born noble, the Wang Family had both power and influence. But unexpectedly, they encountered such an incident, so his temperament became so difficult to get along with..."
Han Ming slowly added, "Actually, Wang Jingyuan is a pretty good person, but the stuff that happened during his childhood left a shadow on him, that’s why he’s reluctant to have a deep relationship with others. In the early years, us friends wanted to help him, but he has high self-esteem and is incredibly stubborn. He refused to accept free things from others, so when you saw him working so many jobs, he was actually only helping out."
Han Ming drew out a cigarette from his pocket and lit it, "His father actually married someone with good conditions, but refused to take him. He found a nanny to take care of him in the original house, but the nanny was half-hearted and didn’t care about him after taking the money."
"His uncle eventually took him and his brother in. Tried his best. But it was too late. Jingyuan had already learned that people leave you when it gets hard. That’s why he won’t take help, even from us. He thinks we’ll pity him. That if he accepts anything for free, it makes him weak."
Han Ming continued, "That’s why he takes so many jobs. That’s why he doesn’t ask for help. His pride’s taller than Mount Everest. If you offer him a hand, he’ll bite it off just to prove he doesn’t need it."
He chuckled bitterly. "When we were younger, we tried sneaking him food or slipping money into his bag. He gave everything back—sometimes with interest. Said he didn’t want to owe anyone.
"So when you see him working three jobs and still refusing money, that’s why. He’s not dumb. He’s just... too proud for his own good." Han Ming looked over at her.
The smoke curled between them, disappearing into the night.
