Chapter 72: Looking for a beating

On the way to the subway station, it was necessary to go through a winding alleyway.

When Lu Qingyan walked through it earlier that day, she hadn’t found it all that desolate or remote, but at nighttime, it was basically empty of people.

By day, this alley was unremarkable—just another shortcut with uneven ground and the occasional smell of soy sauce from the back of a noodle shop. But at night?

At night, it felt like the place ghosts came to gossip.

Every now and then, one or two stray cats would rush past.

After they walked out of the alleyway, there would only be one more street before arriving at the subway station.

During this entire time, Wang Jingyuan had been following behind her.

Lu Qingyan didn’t have the self-awareness to believe that she was good enough for Wang Jingyuan to personally escort her to the subway station.

She wasn’t the kind of girl guys escorted to train stations. That only happened in dramas or romance novels.

She told herself that this was just coincidence. Maybe the subway was on his way home too. Maybe he just didn’t want to be rude and walk ahead of her.

When the two were silent on the road, they could only listen to the slight movements of the night wind as it passed through the alley.

She felt that the surrounding environment was so dark and it was a little scary, so she wanted to liven up the atmosphere and distract herself by talking about something.

She opened her mouth, thinking to say something—anything to break the silence—but no topic came to mind. Weather? Too cliché. Homework? Too depressing. NovelFires? She’d rather die.

Well, might as well not talk and focus on walking instead.

Halfway through, Lu Qingyan suddenly seemed to hear a sound. It was too abrupt in such a quiet alleyway, so much so that it almost felt like the ground shook.

Lu Qingyan turned her head and immediately saw a dazzling white light from behind.

She quickly closed her eyes.

When she reacted, she realized it was the sound of a motorcycle engine.

Three motorcycles drove over from the end of the alleyway. Their front lights pierced into her eyes, it was as though she was looking at an excessively bright sky and it made her head dizzy.

Before she could move, Wang Jingyuan suddenly pulled her in and covered her body with his right arm.

In nearly the next second, the motorcycles rushed toward them.

Wang Jingyuan’s right arm was hit and Lu Qingyan heard him let out a soft groan.

Lu Qingyan glanced sideways and recognized the person on the motorcycle as the one who was unsuccessful in trying to get her to drink alcohol earlier at the bar.

Sounds of laughter floated over from the dazzling light source.

"What, weren’t you pretty awesome in the bar earlier? Why are you hiding now after seeing us?"

"Little white face, don’t run. If you kneel down and beg this grandpa, I might just let you go."

Wang Jingyuan raised his eyes and glanced at him without a change in his expression.

He didn’t respond as if he hadn’t heard the taunting words from those people behind him.

He pulled Lu Qingyan and ran into the alley.

Lu Qingyan didn’t question it—she ran with him.

He seemed to be very familiar with this route as he never hesitated to make a choice when he ran into a corner.

The wind howled around them, and the sound of motorcycle tires screeching as they turned echoed behind.

The alley split into multiple branches, but Wang Jingyuan never paused to decide. He knew exactly where to go, ducking through a side path, then another.

She followed the back of his hoodie, heart hammering. Her breath came in short gasps, but he didn’t slow down.

"We’re being chased by street thugs on motorcycles," she muttered breathlessly, more to herself. "What even is my life right now?"

They quickly arrived at the next intersection.

The sound of motorcycle engines and whistling came from behind.

It was as if they were playing cat and mouse with them.

Lu Qingyan clenched her palms as she tried to think of countermeasures at lightning speed.

When they arrived at the third corner, Wang Jingyuan turned again and they passed through a narrow aisle.

After they went through it, Lu Qingyan discovered that they had already reached a dead end.

Wang Jingyuan was not the least bit concerned as he looked around the area. Then he stuffed her under a merchandise rack being held up by wooden planks.

"In," he ordered.

She hesitated. "But—"

His eyes met hers. Steady. Sharp.

He rested his right arm on it as he lowered his eyes at her "Stay in there," he said, crouching low beside her and pushing a few crates in front to hide her.

"No matter what happens, don’t come out. Got it?" He said calmly.

Naturally, Lu Qingyan wouldn’t give him any trouble right now. She promptly nodded.

Lu Qingyan’s mouth went dry.

She ducked under the rack, her knees pressed to her chest, the air thick with dust and something metallic.

Wang Jingyuan lowered the board back into place, only a thin slit of light allowing her to see him.

It didn’t take long before Lu Qingyan heard curses being transmitted over from afar.

Lu Qingyan knew that it was impossible to drive the motorcycles into this alleyway.

She vaguely heard someone from outside the area said, "That kid’s pretty familiar with the terrain here, we can’t f*cking drive in."

"Just leave the motorcycles and go in. Do the three of us still need to be afraid of a little white face and a woman?"

"It just so happens that this lousy area doesn’t have any surveillance nearby. They’re screwed."

"No cameras, no nosy uncles—perfect night for a beating."

Wang Jingyuan rolled his injured arm once, cracked his neck, and smiled—not the kind you show friends.

The kind wolves show before they bite.

Lu Qingyan squatted under the wooden board as her eyes quickly searched the surroundings for anything that could be used as a weapon.

She wanted to help Wang Jingyuan take one out.
