Revelations in Flight: Bonds Tested, Secrets Unveiled
I held my mother tightly, while Daoist Qingxuan carried Lingxi in his arms as we hurriedly fled the imperial city. Fortunately, we encountered no obstacles on our way out. Once we returned to the inn, everyone quickly packed their belongings, then drove the carriage out of the city.
At that moment, I was filled with regret coming to participate in the martial arts tournament was truly an unwise decision. Although we had secured a spot among the top ten sects, we had also offended dozens of other sects, and my mother had nearly... The thought still made me shudder with fear.
We hadn’t gone far from the city when we spotted Old Hao. He staggered along, his figure looking battered and clearly injured. My gaze lingered on him, and a strange sense of familiarity welled up in my heart. I was almost certain that this seemingly shabby Old Hao was actually the dashing Lin Wuhui from the tournament.
"Senior..." I instinctively wanted to question Old Hao and get a clear answer, but he quickly waved his hand, stopping me. Then his gaze softened, filled with tenderness and a trace of heartache as he looked at my mother. Old Hao reached out and gently touched my mother’s forehead, as if checking something. After a moment, his expression visibly relaxed, as if reassured.
I watched all this intently, and beside me, Lingxi seemed affected by the invisible emotions in the air. Her hands, which had been wrapped around my arm, now clung even tighter, as if I was the only one who could give her comfort at that moment.
Outside the carriage, Daoist Qingxuan’s calls to urge the horses to go faster echoed, the hoofbeats growing more urgent. The carriage sped along the road, swaying slightly. Amid the heavy atmosphere inside, Old Hao’s voice sounded slowly.
"Ye Wuhui, your father Chuge, and your mother were all very close friends from childhood." Old Hao’s gaze was like a magnet, never leaving my mother as he continued, "Your father Chuge was obsessed with martial arts and had extraordinary talent at just thirty, he reached the revered Dao Comprehension realm. Your mother naturally admired him and eventually married him. As for Ye Wuhui, he also loved your mother deeply, but chose to keep that love hidden in his heart."
Old Hao paused, finally shifting his gaze from my mother to me, a look of reminiscence on his face as he continued, "The turning point came not long after you were born. They decided to explore a secret realm, but it was full of dangers countless demon beasts, and a powerful great demon lurking within. After a fierce battle, most of their companions died, and both Ye Wuhui and your father were gravely injured by the demon and its horde, their situation desperate."
"Your mother used all her strength to drag Ye Wuhui and your father out, enduring countless hardships to finally escape the deadly secret realm. They thought they’d survived, but then... the Longevity Sect arrived."
Isn’t the Longevity Sect your own sect? Old Hao’s words made me suspicious, but I didn’t interrupt, just listened intently.
"The one who came was none other than Ye Wuhui’s second uncle, Ye Canglan. At that time, he had just reached the Destiny Knowing realm. Then he and your father..."
"Wait, Senior." I interrupted, having grasped the gist. "Why did Ye Canglan target my father? How did he know where you... they were?"
I thought of how the ’Cold-Faced Sword Immortal’ mother hated Lin Wuhui maybe he’d leaked their location. Old Hao understood my meaning and replied, "Back then, Ye Wuhui and your father didn’t tell anyone about the secret realm, only mentioning to his second uncle that he wanted to go out and train. After all, he’d been at the peak of Divine Transformation for a long time, and seeing your father reach Dao Comprehension early, it was natural to have such thoughts."
"So how did Ye Canglan find out?"
"Sigh... That’s probably why your mother hates Ye Wuhui. At the time, Ye Canglan gave Ye Wuhui a protective jade pendant, saying it was a token from an elder. Ye Wuhui didn’t think much of it..."
"So Ye Canglan used that jade pendant to track them, waiting until my father was wounded before appearing?"
"Yes. He was wary of your father, whose Azure Sword Technique was very powerful. Your father fought desperately, killed the Longevity Sect members who came, and cut off Ye Canglan’s arm, giving me Ye Wuhui and your mother a chance to escape."
Old Hao covered his face with both hands, looking pained as he continued, "Your father created that chance with his life. I didn’t dare waste it. He told me to protect your mother. At the time, your mother wanted to stay and die with him, but how could I let the woman I loved die? I forced her to flee with me."
Afterward, your mother returned to the sect your father founded, never saw me again, and never left the mountain. I stayed below, and when refugees arrived, I became a teacher to the children and protected your mother.
Hearing all this, I didn’t feel any resentment. After all, I was a transmigrator these were just past events. But there was one thing I didn’t understand: why did the Longevity Sect target my father Chuge? Was it a sect feud or a personal grudge?
"Senior, there’s one thing you haven’t explained: why did the Longevity Sect, or Ye Canglan, go so far against my father?"
"This concerns the Longevity Sect’s secret, and the Ye family’s secret."
Old Hao looked up at me, his eyes flickering, as if making a decision to reveal the secret:
"The Longevity Sect forbids anyone from ascending to immortality."
I was stunned how could a cultivation world forbid ascension? I pressed further:
"Why?"
Old Hao smiled faintly, but the movement made his wounds ache, his expression pained. He explained, "Since the world began, humans and demons have existed. Over the ages, people learned to cultivate, and many geniuses ascended to the heavens, leaving this world. But every ascension caused a huge loss of spiritual energy. Though the world’s spiritual energy seems endless, over time, as more ascended, it grew thinner. That’s why cultivators are weaker now. Humans are fragile compared to demons without spiritual energy, how can we compete? The Ye family’s ancestor saw this crisis and founded the Longevity Sect, whose core secret is to prevent anyone from ascending. That’s why Ye Canglan killed your father your father was a rare genius, already at Dao Comprehension, just one step from ascension."
"But even if my father reached Dao Comprehension, isn’t there still Destiny Knowing before ascension? And who knows if he’d succeed?"
Old Hao shook his head. "Do you know why Longevity Sect members are higher in realm than others? Their cultivation method is special one could say tampered with. Since the Ye family forbids ascension, they also fear their descendants might ascend. So the Longevity Sect’s method lets you advance quickly, but at the same realm, you’re not as strong as others. And there are two flaws. One is you can’t ascend. Your father was different he didn’t use their method. If he reached Destiny Knowing, he’d be unmatched. Even at Dao Comprehension, he killed several Longevity Sect elders and cut off Ye Canglan’s arm. That’s how talented he was."
Old Hao then revealed another flaw: the Longevity Sect’s rapid progress comes at the cost of lifespan every battle consumes life force.
There’s another secret: the Longevity Pill. Taking it restores lost lifespan. This is also how they control their disciples and prevent rebellion. Of course, the pill doesn’t make you immortal, but it can prolong life for ordinary people.
After this, Old Hao, weakened by his injuries, fell asleep.
I gazed at the sleeping Old Hao, feeling no doubt or suspicion. Thinking back on all his help, his advice in crises, I realized that, as a transmigrator, I found it hard to trust others but Old Hao was like warm sunlight breaking through the gloom, giving me a long-lost sense of safety.
My trust came not just from his past actions, but from his deep, hidden love for the Cold-Faced Sword Immortal.
Reaching this point, I finally understood this world, though it had nearly cost me dearly.
...
Mother and Old Hao lay on opposite sides of the carriage, Lingxi clinging to my arm, asleep on my shoulder. I didn’t dare sleep, afraid of trouble on the road. After a while, Mother woke up first, sleepily propping herself up. I gently laid Lingxi down, but she clung to my arm, thwarting my plan to help Mother. "Oh, you’ve got a wife and forgotten your mother."
I blushed and quickly asked, "...Mother, how are you feeling?"
"I’m fine. I had a dream dreamt of that cold-faced woman... Hey, isn’t that Old Hao? When did he get back?"
Mother noticed Old Hao on the other side. "Met him after we left the city." I recounted what Old Hao had told me.
"Hmm, then what that woman in my dream said must be true pretty much matches what Old Hao said. Later, she returned to the sect, heartbroken and hating the Ye family, and practiced a secret art she found in the secret realm something called Supreme Forgetting Love."
No wonder she was so cold...
"So... did she leave?"
"Yes. She said she was at peace, asked me to take care of you, since she’d spent those years cultivating and hadn’t been there for you."
That sword immortal probably didn’t know her son was no longer the original, that her son had become my Nascent Soul and merged with me. Still, this journey wasn’t without gain "Old Hao is Ye Wuhui."
Mother bent over Old Hao, carefully examining his scruffy face, which looked nothing like the handsome Erlang God. She even tugged his beard, but found nothing.
...
I stepped out of the carriage and sat beside Daoist Qingxuan. "Uncle Qingxuan, you should rest in the carriage for a while. I’ll drive."
We’d been on the road for a day and a night. Daoist Qingxuan had been tense the whole time even for a cultivator, fatigue was unavoidable.
He didn’t refuse, handed me the reins, and went into the carriage.
Inside, the atmosphere was a bit awkward. Daoist Qingxuan sat quietly in a corner, head bowed in thought. Lingxi, seeing her master enter, snuggled up to him. Her two Daoist robes were ruined, so she wore Daoist Qingxuan’s, which made her look even more petite and cute.
In her heart, Lingxi already saw Daoist Qingxuan as a father figure. She clung to his arm, sitting quietly.
Daoist Qingxuan, seeing his disciple so close, seemed to make a decision and said, "Sword Immortal Lin, I have a thought..."
Mother, who was wiping sweat from the sleeping Old Hao’s brow, turned and asked, "What is it?"
"I’ve been thinking... I want to entrust Lingxi to your care. As you know, Ye Wuhen has perfected his demonic arts. I worry that even if we return to the sect, no one there can stop him..."
Daoist Qingxuan’s gaze lingered gently on Lingxi as he voiced his concerns.
Mother’s eyes lit up with interest. She sat elegantly to the side, crossing her legs, revealing her delicate ankles, slender calves, and shapely thighs.
Daoist Qingxuan, seeing this, quickly lowered his head, not daring to look.
"I’m not related to Lingxi why should I take responsibility for her?"
"I..."
Daoist Qingxuan hadn’t expected this and was speechless.
Lingxi, too, hadn’t expected such a reply. Her big, watery eyes filled with grievance, as if she might cry at any moment.
"Unless..."
Daoist Qingxuan, anxious at Mother’s drawn-out tone, quickly said, "As long as you’ll protect Lingxi, I’d give my life without hesitation."
"Pfft, what would I do with your life?"
"Then..."
Daoist Qingxuan was baffled, unable to guess Mother’s intentions. If it was about money, he’d be stumped he cared nothing for wealth.
Just as he was feeling helpless, Mother said, "Unless... Lingxi marries my son. Then we’d be family, and there’d be no need for formal entrustment protecting one’s own is only right."
Daoist Qingxuan and Lingxi were both surprised. Lingxi’s cheeks flushed red, and she shyly lowered her head, twisting her fingers.
Daoist Qingxuan frowned, worried. "Sword Immortal Lin, Lingxi has suffered misfortune. If this happens, aren’t you afraid of gossip?"
Mother just laughed, waving her sleeve. "I think as long as they truly like each other, that’s enough."
Daoist Qingxuan grew serious. "You may not know, but Lingxi’s background is special I may not have the final say."
Lingxi, alarmed, tugged Daoist Qingxuan’s sleeve. "Master..."
Daoist Qingxuan paused, then understood. He said, "To me, Lingxi is both disciple and daughter. Her future is my responsibility." He looked at Lingxi with loving, complicated eyes.
Seeing her master agree, Lingxi shyly lowered her head, biting her lip, but couldn’t help a faint smile. Her starry eyes occasionally peeked at Daoist Qingxuan and Mother, then quickly looked away, full of shyness and joy.
Mother raised an eyebrow, her lips curling in a playful smile, teasing, "Oh, look how happy this little girl is."
Lingxi’s face turned even redder, like a rosy cloud, so cute. She looked up, half-complaining, half-shy, "Oh, Aunt Lin..." her soft voice full of coquettishness.
Seeing her so embarrassed, Mother smiled more, deliberately drawing out her words: "From now on... you can’t call me Aunt Lin..."
Lingxi paused, eyes full of confusion and shyness, biting her lip. "Then... what should I call you?"
Mother crossed her arms, making her ample bosom stand out even more, and said proudly, "Of course call me mother-in-law."
Lingxi’s cheeks burned even hotter. She lowered her head, twisting her clothes, her body squirming, wishing she could disappear, but a thread of sweetness spread in her heart.
After this conversation, Daoist Qingxuan finally relaxed, leaning against the carriage wall and soon falling into a deep, steady sleep, his fatigue eased.
Not long after, Old Hao woke from his sleep. He stared at the ceiling, recalling what had happened. After a moment, his mind cleared, and he moved slightly, wincing at the pain. He glanced around, saw Daoist Qingxuan asleep, and noticed Lingxi’s shy, sweet expression. Though puzzled, he said nothing.
His gaze settled on Mother, his eyes instantly full of deep affection and concern. Struggling to sit up, Mother hurried to help.
She gripped his hand tightly, and his hand trembled with years of emotion and the excitement of reunion.
"Hao-ge, you’re awake. How’s your body? Is it serious?" Mother asked anxiously, her eyes full of care.
She began to check him over, her hands roaming from his shoulders to his arms, chest, back, even private areas she wouldn’t rest until she’d checked every inch.
Old Hao was flustered, his face reddening, not knowing whether to stop her or not.
Lingxi watched, stifling a giggle, her gaze darting between the two.
"Little... Sister Lin, I’m fine, just need some rest," Old Hao stammered, trying to stop her invasive check.
"No way, take off your clothes and let me see."
"Don’t..."
"What’s wrong? Shy?"
Mother glanced around Daoist Qingxuan was sound asleep, and Lingxi was looking away shyly.
Mother leaned close to Old Hao’s ear, her soft hair brushing his cheek, her warm breath tickling as she whispered, "Qingxuan’s asleep, and Lingxi will be my daughter-in-law no outsiders here."
She straightened, her eyes twinkling mischievously, her fairy-like face full of playful intent.
"How did you get that technique?"
Mother was startled by the question, then sat beside Old Hao, not answering right away.
’Son, son, Old Hao’s asking about my technique what should I say?’ Mother’s voice sounded in my mind. I thought for a moment and replied, ’Mom, just say you got it by chance, and don’t elaborate I trust he won’t press.’
’Okay.’
Mother answered as I suggested, and sure enough, Old Hao didn’t pursue it. "I saw that technique in the sect’s library..."
I listened from outside the carriage as Old Hao continued, "That technique makes people lustful, and quietly changes those around them..."
Before he could finish, Mother interrupted, "So what? I just want to live again and be happy."
Old Hao was surprised he could feel the woman he’d loved had changed, no longer the same as in his memories, but maybe only this new her would accept him again.
"And you do you plan to live again under this identity, or..." Mother’s words hit Old Hao hard, making him cough. "You... guessed?" Old Hao’s eyes flashed with panic. Mother gently touched his chest, saying, "These wounds are all from me."
Mother knew Old Hao was Ye Wuhui she’d checked his wounds while he slept, and the claw marks were proof. I’d already heard her inner thoughts my lovestruck mother surely hoped Old Hao would return to his handsome self. Who wouldn’t want a powerful, handsome idol by their side?
