Chapter 90: Adrian Vs Karl (1)

[Quest Completed: Train for 8 hours. 2x Recovery Pill (★★★), 2x Stamina Pill (★★★)]

Adrian’s lips curved into a faint smile as the System’s notification faded.

He hadn’t anticipated a quest when he’d started training, but the rewards were a welcome surprise.

He had come to learn that the System’s quests were unpredictable, and while he still didn’t know how to trigger them, this one was particularly satisfying.

The 3-Star Recovery and Stamina Pills were very valuable, but he didn’t plan to use them now, though.

Despite the exhaustion weighing on his limbs, he was confident his body would recover by morning without them. Today’s training, intense as it was still paled in comparison to Master Von’s grueling sessions.

"I just need enough sleep," Adrian told himself. With no lessons scheduled tomorrow, he could wake whenever he pleased.

The last time he received a Recovery Pill, he had taken it immediately. In hindsight, he regretted not saving it, though it wouldn’t have mattered.

As a 2-Star Knight now, a lower-grade pill would be useless, but these 3-Star ones were different and were worth stashing for emergencies.

He mentally cataloged them in his [Inventory], satisfied with the day’s gains.

Karl’s hand clapped onto Adrian’s back, nearly leaning his full weight onto him. "Let’s go back to the dorm, bro."

Adrian stretched and the two trudged back across the Academy grounds, the moonlight casting their shadows as they walked in silence.

Back in the dorm, Adrian sat cross-legged on his bed, attempting to cultivate to speed his recovery.

He closed his eyes, focusing on the mana currents in the air, but his dantian refused to cooperate.

The Tech Core was still not satisfied with letting him cultivate. After several failed attempts, he sighed and gave up.

’Sleep would have to do.’

He glanced at Karl, who was already cultivating before drifting to sleep instantly.

When he woke, sunlight streamed through the dorm’s narrow window, warming the room.

[9:19 AM].

’I overslept...’

It was still worth it, considering that he felt restored to peak condition. But he observed the room was empty.

"Oh, yes. I promised him a fight today."

He sighed before leaving the bed and refreshing, before changing into a fresh set of loose pants and a fitted shirt and leaving he the dorm for the training yard.

***

The training yard was alive with activity when Adrian arrived, the sandy expanse dotted with knights practicing drills.

Some swung swords, while others ran around the yard, their grunts and clashing weapons filling the air.

But Adrian’s eyes went straight to Karl who sat cross-legged at the yard’s center.

He wasn’t training, as Adrian had expected, but cultivating with a calm expression calm. The sight was oddly serene amidst the chaos of the yard.

Other knights noticed Adrian’s arrival and their glances were filled with surprise.

To them, the training yard was routine, but Adrian wasn’t known for joining in.

He had a reputation for hating training, so his sudden appearance drew curious stares.

Adrian ignored them, striding toward Karl with purpose. Reaching him, he gave a light tap on his shoulder. "Ready for the duel?"

Karl’s eyes snapped open and his grin returned in full force.

"Of course!" He sprang to his feet, dusting off his pants. "I thought you would back out. I didn’t want to wake you, but I’m glad you came."

"Yeah, I’m here. So how are we doing this?"

"Don’t you want to set the rules?"

Adrian waved a hand dismissively. "You go ahead."

"Alright then!" Karl plucked his spear from where it was buried in the sand and stepped back. Using the spear’s tip, he began dragging it through the sand, carving a large circle.

His movements were deliberate, drawing the attention of nearby knights, who paused their drills to watch, intrigued by the spectacle.

When Karl finished, he stepped back, admiring his work. "Beautiful," he said, planting the spear’s butt in the ground.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed, estimating the circle’s size. He pegged the diameter at roughly 19 meters.

Activating his [Analysis] skill, he confirmed it:

[19.3 meters]

Almost exactly as he’d guessed.

Karl turned to him, gripping his spear.

"We’ll fight until one of us gives up or steps out of the circle. Don’t worry, you’re my best friend so I won’t injure you. But I’m definitely giving you a good beating."

Adrian didn’t react to Karl’s bravado, despite the latter being aware of the gap between them.

But Karl’s confidence wasn’t arrogance. From the day they met, Karl had been this way: bold, talkative, and skilled enough to back it up.

So Adrian simply nodded. "Sure. Should we start?"

"Yep, we just need a referee." Karl spun around, raising his voice. "Anyone wanna referee?"

The knights, already invested, murmured among themselves. One stepped forward, a tall boy who looked about 16. He carried a spear and dropped it aside before coming over.

"I’ll do it."

Karl grinned. "Nice! I trust Joshua to be fair."

Adrian didn’t object, stepping into the circle as Joshua positioned himself at the edge.

Karl took his place opposite, twirling his spear with casual ease.

Adrian was unarmed and he stood relaxed, not bothering with a stance. The other knights formed a loose ring around the circle with curiosity.

Joshua raised a hand and said in a clear voice.

"I’ll keep this fair. You both ready?"

He glanced at Karl, who nodded eagerly, then at Adrian, who gave a slight incline of his head. Joshua’s eyes lingered on Adrian, noting his lack of a weapon.

He had seen Karl’s skill first hand and had even tasted numerous defeat from his skill.

As for Adrian, he knew him as a lazy person who didn’t deserve as a Knight.

Though there have been rumors to why he recently began improving physically, Joshua knew that it won’t be enough to defeat Karl, but he still planned on remaining impartial.

Raising both arms, he began the countdown.

"3..."

"2..."

"1..."

"Begin!"

The word rang out and Karl lunged forward with incredible speed.
