Reborn Together: The General and I Reach for Power
Chapter 38 - 36: Save My Sister

Chapter 38: Chapter 36: Save My Sister

Xie Liangchen sat on the Jinwu, a housekeeper stood before her.

The housekeeper smiled and said, "Madam asked us to bring some food over, please eat some."

The housekeeper’s voice carried a hint of humility, but a flash of impatience glinted deep in her eyes. This girl was a farm girl, likely terrified, sitting timidly without any response, no matter what was said to her.

If it weren’t for the Third Young Master’s instructions, the housekeeper wouldn’t have come to persuade her over and over.

"I want to go home." Xie Liangchen finally spoke after a long pause.

Here it goes again.

The housekeeper couldn’t help but change her expression, no matter what she said, in the end, Miss Xie had only one thing to say: She wanted to go home.

Was Miss Xie’s mind impaired, or was there something wrong with her ears? This was the National Guardian General Mansion; someone of Miss Xie’s status ordinarily would never have the privilege to enter as a guest. Yet, she didn’t know how to seize the opportunity; either she cried incessantly or sat there like a fool.

"Please have your meal; you will be sent home in a while."

Xie Liangchen lifted her head carefully and glanced at the housekeeper, her eyes passing over the food on the table, seemingly tempted.

The housekeeper was about to continue persuading her.

But Xie Liangchen opened her mouth again, repeating unchanged, "I want to go home."

The housekeeper was completely out of options and had to report back to Song Qizheng and Madam Rong.

Once the housekeeper turned away, Xie Liangchen finally looked around, not expecting to be brought to the Song Family.

In her previous life, Song Xian was estranged from his father and brother; outsiders said Song Xian was ruthless, but the exact details were unknown to her before. Now she had some insight.

If the National Guardian General wanted to interrogate her, there was no need for such concealment; therefore, the one abducting her must be Song Xian’s brother.

Now, having been interrogated for the "truth" and brought to the Song Family, it was clear Song Xian’s two brothers were very favored by the National Guardian General. Even using schemes against their older brother could be openly indulged.

Truly, Song Xian was surrounded by formidable foes.

If she could help, Song Xian would be embarrassed to pursue her debts aggressively.

While Xie Liangchen was contemplating, the door was opened again, and a tall figure stepped inside.

Xie Liangchen’s gaze landed on the man’s face; he was in his forties, a commanding presence between his brows indicative of a seasoned warrior, as he walked directly to a chair and sat down, looking at Xie Liangchen with bright, penetrating eyes.

Xie Liangchen had a guess, this man was probably the National Guardian General Song Qizheng.

The steward wanted to prompt Xie Liangchen to stand and greet, but Xie Liangchen was already flustered, sitting there with her spine curved.

Song Qizheng spoke first, "Is what you said all true?"

"It’s true," Xie Liangchen said hurriedly, "Everything I said is true, let me go back, I want to go home."

After Song Qizheng asked, the room fell into silence, as if he was contemplating how to handle this matter.

Song Qizheng wasn’t given much time; the steward came in and whispered, "Master, people from Chen Family Village are causing a disturbance at the Xie Family; Second Master Xie might reveal the truth, this..."

The steward glanced at Xie Liangchen; this situation couldn’t be covered up.

Song Qizheng frowned; either he would send Miss Xie back to the Xie Family, pretending nothing had happened, though Li You would inevitably hear of the commotion, and Song Xian might use this event against Song Min.

Or he could hand Miss Xie over to the government office, where Song Xian couldn’t avoid court punishment.

Song Qizheng hesitated.

"Master," Madam Rong hurried through the door, her voice slightly hoarse, "What should be done? Min said... he can’t live at home, he plans to leave the North and has already started packing."

"Absurd," Song Qizheng finally said, "Has the North no place for him?"

Madam Rong’s hand trembled slightly, disregarding her surroundings: "Master, if Xian finds out, would he... would he have someone take Min?"

Madam Rong was too terrified to continue.

Song Qizheng shot Madam Rong a stern glance, then stood and walked outside.

Xie Liangchen watched the couple’s back, feeling a pang of sadness for Song Xian; Song Qizheng’s heart was no longer with his eldest son, his eyes only for his stepson’s child.

Though her parents were gone, fortunately, she had her grandmother and younger brother caring for her.

Xie Liangchen glanced at the food, then at the desserts and tea on the table; Madam Rong had brought them to express goodwill, but she hadn’t touched anything.

This showed her loyalty to her creditor.

She wondered how her grandmother and younger brother were now. She had given the drawing of medicinal herbs to her younger brother and left a note telling him to give the drawing to Li You and lead the villagers to find Xie Shaoshan. Even if her brother may not know the details, he should follow her instructions.

...

Old Mrs. Chen stood in the Xie Family courtyard with a group of women.

"Where exactly did you take Liangchen to?" Old Mrs. Chen’s voice was sharp, "If you don’t hand over Liangchen today, I will report you to the government."

Xie Shaoshan’s face was ashen, while Mrs. Qiao was both disdainful and fearful, facing such unpleasant people.

"Mother," Xie Rulan tugged at Mrs. Qiao’s sleeve, "Quickly report this to the officials!" Have the government arrest these rogues.

Mrs. Qiao shared this thought; while the people of Chen Family Village weren’t paying attention, she nodded at the steward beside her.

The steward quietly walked away, with Chen Zigeng discreetly following.

Xie Rulan, for some reason, felt a bit of joy, had Xie Liangchen really disappeared? Had she been abducted again?

Xie Liangchen ruined her engagement, she had no outlet for her anger, and now that Xie Liangchen encountered trouble, it seemed heaven had eyes.

"You vicious creature, driving a mule cart here to our village, I suspected you had evil intentions, indeed you took away Miss Chen."

"You claim you’re her Second Uncle, wouldn’t harm her; I spit on that, if you had a heart, even animals could turn into humans."

Xie Shaoshan’s face darkened from the insults: "What does her disappearance have to do with me?"

"Was it your mule cart?"

"Did Miss Chen leave on the mule cart?"

"Since that’s the case, with Miss Chen missing, who else should we ask? Who knows if you secretly had someone follow her and took her away when we weren’t looking."

Old Mrs. Chen berated without pause; Xie Shaoshan couldn’t even get a word in.

Old Mrs. Chen grew tired of standing, she placed her hands on her waist: "Why did you come to our Chen Family Village? Isn’t it for Miss Chen’s prescription? She didn’t give it to you, so you came to snatch it, do you have any shame?"

Though it wasn’t true, after Old Mrs. Chen’s words, it felt like he had been condemned. Though Xie Shaoshan was furious, gritting his teeth, a peculiar smile appeared on his face: "Who would covet your prescriptions? Liangchen doesn’t know anything about medicinal herbs, I heard everything you said in the room that night."

Old Mrs. Chen apparently didn’t expect Xie Shaoshan to say such a thing and froze on the spot. f .r e\ewebnov(e)(l).c om

Xie Shaoshan seemed to squeeze out his words through clenched teeth: "Deceiving court officials, none of you will escape."

Old Mrs. Chen stood still for a moment, then suddenly stuck her waist out, pursing her lips before spitting directly at Xie Shaoshan’s face: "I don’t buy your nonsense, if the court doesn’t arrest your wicked heart but arrests me, I’ll recognize you as my ancestor."

...

Li You was writing documents in the government office when a confidante came to report, "People from Chen Family Village are causing trouble."

Li You paused; the ones delivering medicine to the Paper Workshop were from Chen Family Village.

The confidante continued, "I heard the Miss Xie who brought the prescription is missing, so people from Chen Family Village went to Second Master Xie’s house to demand her. The Xie Family members who reported to the officials also said that Miss Xie didn’t know any herbs nor had any papermaking formula; she was sent to the Papermaking Workshop under someone’s orders."

Li You set down his pen; what on earth was happening?

After a moment of silence, Li You stood up: "Lead the way to the Xie Family, I’ll go see the situation."

The confidante responded, and the two walked straight out of the government office.

Exiting the office, Li You was preparing to mount his horse when a government official called out, followed by a small figure sprinting over, the child unceremoniously wrapped his arms around him.

Chen Zigeng choked as he spoke: "Sir, please save my sister, she’s in trouble."
