Ella’s phone continued ringing, an unknown number flashing on the top of her screen. She recognized it as the same number she had gotten missed calls from, in the morning

After a beat, Ella answered the call.

But before she could utter a word, a delicate voice came from the other side—

"Hello."

Ella stiffened, "Mom...?"

"Return to the Yu Mansion."

Ella glanced at Adrian who was smoothening her dress, "Mom, I can’t today..."

"Now." Mrs. Yu’s voice was stern compared to how she had talked to her yesterday at the party.

Before Ella could say a word, Mrs. Yu hung up.

Feeling a piercing gaze on her, Ella looked up at Adrian with a smile, "Baby, I..."

"Need to go?" Adrian reached out to play with her long hair.

Ella fell silent for a beat before she shifted a little away from him.

Her hair trailed down his fingers, making him frown.

When he looked at her, the girl had her head lowered as she twiddled with her index fingers.

The corner of his lips twitched.

"I am sorry... for running away like that yesterday," Ella began, "Thank you for going there and saving me on time."

They had not ventured the topic after the wine was flushed out of her system.

But as Ella spoke, she no longer hesitated, "I cannot assure you that I won’t go against you in the future..."

Adrian’s face darkened.

"I might be your wife..."

The dark clouds above Adrian’s head dispersed instantly.

"But I am my own person..."

The dark clouds returned, "Mine," he said, grabbing her wrist and yanking her into his arms.

Ella pressed her palms on his chest and pulled herself back, "If I say you are mine, would you let me control all your actions? Would you do what I want you to do? Would you stay at home if I refuse to let you go out?"

Adrian fell silent.

Ella nodded, "See, that is not how it works in a normal relationship..."

"Yes, yes...’’ Adrian’s deep voice cut off her mumblings, "And yes."

Ella: "_" So, he went silent because he was reflecting on the questions?

Looking into his clear eyes, Ella felt helpless.

Forget it, considering that this man had never been in a relationship before, she shouldn’t hold himself to normal standards.

Hence, as they left the amusement park together, Ella patiently told him, "Baby, we have a lot of time together. As a couple, we shouldn’t hold each other back. But rather, we should be there for each other."

Adrian’s face reflected that he did not quite like the sound of it, but for some reason that was incomprehensible to Ella, he remained mum, not quite cutting her words off.

Unbeknownst to Ella, Adrian’s mind had glitched at certain phrases as those words floated in his mind like a soothing melody.

Sensing his acceptance, Ella continued softly, "I don’t know if you have some feud with my parents but if you didn’t turn me down when I wanted to visit them, I would not have run away like that..."

Adrian turned to her.

"But I am taking accountability. It was my fault just as much as it was yours. In the future, I won’t do it again... But, would you, in the future, stop me from doing things and going to places?"

Suddenly, Adrian’s steps came to a halt.

At above 6 feet, he easily towered over her when he stood in front of her.

"I can protect you."

Ella’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, and her heart skipped a few beats.

Adrian turned around to continue walking but at this moment, fingers curled around his palm, halting him in his tracks.

"Adrian, I want to protect you too,’’ the words left Ella’s mouth in a rush, perhaps even before she could reflect on what she was saying.

"I don’t know when it started."

Perhaps when she remembered Kade was opposing Adrian in her previous life, or when she dreamt of him being in a coma when she was kidnapped... Or somewhere in between.

She did not know.

"I get swayed by my emotions and sometimes, I get impulsive. I am not rich enough. Not capable enough..."

Before she could finish speaking, Adrian shifted his hand and yanked her closer to him.

In a swift movement, he captured her lips.

Fireworks went off in the sky as he kissed relentlessly as if she was the air that he needed to breathe.

When their lips parted, Ella panted softly against his lips, "But one day, I will get there... And by then, I will protect you too... Hey, hey, where are you taking me?"

Adrian didn’t let her finish.

His hands gripped her waist firmly, spinning her around and dragging her into the shadows behind the nearest closed booth, where only the flicker of distant lights and the occasional burst of fireworks lit the dark.

Ella gasped as her back hit the cool wall, but the sound was swallowed the next moment when Adrian’s mouth claimed hers again, deeper this time, hotter and more demanding.

His hand slid down her thigh.

And she felt a familiar warmth trailing between her legs as he caressed the spot, "Be good," he murmured against her lips, voice dark and hoarse.

Before she could even process the words, his grip hoisted her up effortlessly.

Ella’s legs instinctively wrapped around his waist, her arms tangling behind his neck.

Her sundress rode up.

And her body pressed flush against his.

His hips locked into hers as he pinned her to the wall completely. As she tried to catch her breath, their gazes met.

Ella’s fingers slid into his hair, yanking him closer as her hips rolled slightly into his, breathy against his lips.

And in the next moment, he kissed her again, without any restraint this time.

His kiss turned savage, tongue diving deep, tasting her like he wanted to ruin her for anyone else.

Her hands tugged at his hair as his grip bruised her thighs, pinning her harder, until the world spun and she moaned into his mouth.

Adrian groaned low in his throat, kissing her like he wanted to memorize every inch of her mouth.
