Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Training with monsters

The Schattler charged again, this time swinging its claw in a wide arc, trying to slice from the side. Axelius bent backward just enough to dodge it, the claws barely missing his nose. Then he rolled to the side and came up behind the monster.

The Schattler twisted fast, trying to catch him, but Axelius ducked and cut low, slicing across its leg. The monster screeched in pain and stumbled.

Axelius took that moment—he stepped on the Schattler’s foot, locking it in place. As the monster tried to pull back, Axelius threw his weight into his shoulder and slammed into its chest, knocking it off balance again.

Before it could recover, Axelius flipped the katana in his hand, gripped it backward, and stabbed at the base of its ribs. The blade hit but didn’t go deep, the monster twisting just in time.

The Schattler snarled and jumped high, spinning midair and aiming both claws down like spears. Axelius rolled backward, then stabbed upward while lying on the ground. The tip of his katana scratched its belly, and black mist-like blood flew out.

Axelius stood fast, brushing the dirt from his clothes. "Still not enough," he whispered, eyes cold.

The Schattler stood too, swaying a little now. It growled and opened its mouth again, that horrible screech building in its throat But Axelius just smiled.

Axelius grinned, eyes sharp with excitement as he held the katana loosely in his hand, the blade catching a faint shimmer of sunlight through the trees.

"Come on," he said, slowly walking toward the Schattler. "Don’t tell me your creepy face is just for show. That’s it? That’s all you got?" He tilted his head and narrowed his eyes. "At least entertain me more."

The Schattler hissed, its glowing owl eyes widening, and it dropped to all fours like a wild beast. Its long claws dug into the dirt, tail twitching unnaturally behind its back. The miasma around it thickened for a moment, giving its outline a twisted blur. Then—it lunged.

Its claws slashed in a zigzag, fast and sharp, trying to confuse Axelius. One claw swept low while the other curved high like a sickle.

He crouched slightly, and with a short dash to the left, he twisted his body in a way that made both attacks barely graze his clothes. He then used his momentum to spin, sliding on one foot like a dancer. His blade cut at the Schattler’s side—not deep, just enough to sting.

"Hah, too slow," Axelius said with a smirk.

The monster backed off, shaking its head in frustration. Then it opened its beak and let out another high-pitched screech that shook the leaves from the trees But Axelius took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a second, It didn’t affect him.

He jumped up and grabbed a low tree branch, swinging himself over the Schattler just as it charged again. As he flipped in the air, he dragged the tip of the katana across the top of the monster’s back, leaving a glowing scratch mark.

Landing with one knee down and one foot ready, he didn’t stop—he kicked off again, this time rushing forward and sliding under the Schattler’s belly just as it turned. From below, he slashed upward in an "X" shape. More black blood sprayed out.

"Still too soft," Axelius muttered, standing tall. "If I wanted to end this, I could. But I wanna see how long you last."

The Schattler let out a strange, rattling growl. Axelius narrowed his eyes as he stared at the Schattler. Its claws shook, and its body began backing away, each slow step showing the weakness it tried to hide. Then something strange hit him—deep in his chest. A strange, squeezing feeling. His hand moved on its own, grabbing over his heart.

"It’s this feeling again, Damn it."

He looked at the trembling creature. It wasn’t angry anymore. It wasn’t even trying to kill him.

It was afraid.

The monster, the one that once made him freeze in terror back in Farenhald Forest, because it finally understood it couldn’t win. The Schattler’s wings opened wide in panic, and with one last screech, it tried to take flight.

But Axelius didn’t let it.

He threw his katana—sharp and straight. The blade spun once, twice, and then thunk—it embedded deep into one of the Schattler’s wings.

The creature shrieked as it dropped to the forest floor with a heavy thud, feathers flying everywhere. It writhed, its wing stuck to the ground, unable to move.

Axelius walked toward it slowly, his steps quiet but heavy. Now the monster was laying flat on the ground, breathing fast, eyes wide.

"Stop it," Axelius muttered, his voice colder now. He stood over the creature, looking down at it. "I don’t wanna know what you feel."

He grabbed the hilt of the katana embedded in its wing. The Schattler screamed as he yanked it out, blood flying as the metal slid free.

Axelius looked at the blade. Then looked at the creature again. "Boring," he said plainly.

And with one smooth motion, he raised the katana—and brought it down across the monster’s neck.

The Schattler’s head rolled a short distance before its body twitched and began to dissolve. Black dust scattered into the air as Axelius touched the corpse with one hand. It shimmered before being pulled into his body, absorbed just like the rabbit before it.

"Tsk." He wiped the blade on his sleeve and turned away.

From the trees, Owen bounced forward slowly.

As the black dust faded away from the monster’s body, a soft light appeared in front of Axelius. It was a glowing word floating in the air like a system message.

[Core Rank: Sixth Cycle Achieved]

Axelius looked at it with a small nod. "It took almost a month to reach Sixth Cycle..."

Owen floated beside him, arms crossed. "It’s getting harder and harder to level up your core rank."

Axelius looked at his hand, opening and closing it. "Well, my body still can’t handle too much miasma. Better to keep taking monster lives,"

They started walking again, Axelius looked around, but no strong presence was nearby.

"Okay! It’s my turn now!" Owen suddenly said with energy.

Just then, something moved up ahead. It was small, green-skinned, and crouched low near a fallen log.

A goblin.

Its ears twitched and it sniffed the air, not aware of them yet. It looked around quickly, holding a sharp bone blade in its hand. It was alone.

Owen grinned. "Perfect timing."

Axelius stepped aside, letting Owen bounce forward.

"Alright, go on then, I’m just here if you can’t handle it" he said with a small smirk.
