Chapter 85: The blockers
Chapter 85: Chapter 85: The blockers
The boy and girl who had tried to ambush him stood tall, both wearing matching black-and-red armbands—proof they were elite. They looked about thirteen.
"You got lucky, commoner," the girl sneered, flipping her tied-up red hair over her shoulder. Her brown eyes burned with contempt.
Owen let out a quiet hum. "They’re both thirteen. Most likely passed the trial four years ago."
Axelius shrugged, still grinning. "I was born lucky. Now, what do two past winners want from me, huh? Lost in the forest and need help?" He raised a brow and crossed his arms. "Ah, I see. So you guys are the reason this trial got harder. Interesting."
The boy popped his knuckles with a smirk. "Smart guess. Yeah, we’re here for a little... extra credit. The older passers are allowed to return as blockers. Our job is to make sure trash like you doesn’t make it out."
Axelius’s grin widened. "And breaking the rules is part of that task?"
The girl narrowed her eyes. "No killing is allowed. But breaking a few bones?" She smiled coldly. "That’s not against the rules."
Owen, who had been silently bouncing on Axelius’s shoulder, sighed. "Well, technically they’re right. Summoning beasts is allowed. But sadly for you, Axel, you don’t have one."
Axelius snorted and grinned even wider. "Sadly? It’s fortunate, Owen. I don’t need a beast to deal with these two."
The boy and girl paused, looking at each other—then burst out laughing.
"You don’t even have a beast, and you dare say that?" the girl mocked.
The boy shook his head. "Would you look at the time?" he said, tapping his wristwatch dramatically. "Last-second help isn’t going to arrive. You’re alone. And from what I’ve heard, you barely know how to fight."
The girl’s expression turned colder. "And the rumors are true," she said, tilting her head. "You talk to yourself. That’s disgusting. No Dravenhart is insane."
Axelius sighed dramatically. "Wow. Hurtful and unoriginal. Got any more weak insults?"
The girl raised her arm and snapped her fingers. A glowing red circle formed under her, and a large feline beast with fur like molten ember and golden stripes stepped out, its claws digging into the ground.
The boy followed suit, summoning a beast that looked like a cross between a wolf and a bear, black fur with streaks of red lightning crackling along its spine.
Owen’s voice got quiet. "Great. She summoned a Flame Lynx. He’s got a Thunder Fang."
Axelius just cracked his neck and stepped forward. "Then neither am I."
Axelius narrowed his eyes at the two beasts that stood in front of him, muscles tensed, claws ready to strike.
"I need to deal with these two beasts first," he said calmly, lowering his stance and run while scanning the ground for anything he could use.
The two older kids laughed loudly, full of pride and confidence, as if the fight was already over.
"Run...run until you can!" the girl shouted mockingly, pointing at him with a cruel grin. "You can’t outrun a beast, commoner!"
At her command, both beasts roared and charged at Axelius with powerful steps that shook the ground slightly. The Flame Lynx moved like fire itself, fast and graceful, while the Thunder Fang came from the side with sparks flickering along its sharp teeth.
He darted to the side, ducking beneath the first swipe from the lynx, rolling forward and grabbing a thick broken branch as he moved. With quick thinking, he led the beast toward a patch of unstable ground he had noticed earlier—where the moss was loose and the soil slightly dipped in.
Just as the lynx pounced again, Axelius slid under its belly and used the branch like a lever, planting it into the soft ground and kicking it with force. The stick jabbed upward, lifting the lynx slightly and knocking it off balance. The beast landed in the unstable patch, its paws slipping, and Axelius jumped onto its back and slammed his elbow into the back of its neck.
The beast fell, stunned, and didn’t rise again.
Owen whistled, impressed. "You’re lucky this beasts are not fully grown yet."
"Nah, that’s only because their masters are idiot." Before he could celebrate, though, he felt it—the ground behind him shift.
The Thunder Fang had circled around quietly, using the lynx as a distraction. Now it leapt into the air behind him, lightning dancing across its sharp claws.
But something happened.
Axelius turned his head just enough to see the beast mid-air, and in that moment something burst out from within him. His body pulsed with invisible pressure, thick and heavy like gravity, and his eyes flashed dark for a second.
Owen shooked his head. "Don’t let your guard down, look your aura domination acted on its own again."
The Thunder Fang’s leap faltered in midair, its eyes wide in fear. Instead of striking Axelius, it whimpered, flipped, and landed a few feet away. Then it turned and ran into the forest with its tail tucked down, leaving claw marks in its rush to escape.
"Ah! Dang it! " Axelius kick the ground in dissapointment
The two older kids hadn’t seen what happened. They were still walking forward slowly, smirking, full of confidence, thinking their beasts would finish the job.
"That was too easy," the boy said, then he felt thunder fang return to its beasts space.
"Right? And he didn’t even summon a beast. How pathetic," the girl added.
But when they finally arrived at the scene, they found the Flame Lynx knocked out and no sign of the Thunder Fang.
"What—?" the girl blinked. "Where’s Thunder Fang?"
Axelius stepped out from behind a tree, dusting off his shirt with a grin.
"Oh, he left. Said something about being allergic to disappointment."
The two older kids stared at him in shock, not believing what they were seeing.
The girl frowned hard, but her smirk came back quickly. "So what? You got lucky. Let’s see if your body can handle more than your mouth can."
She raised her fists and approached him slowly, her steps light and full of skill, as if she was ready to dance rather than fight.
"You know what I heard?" she said in a teasing tone. "That you’re not just weak, but insane too. Talking to yourself, laughing alone, making up stories about being strong... maybe we should break that little brain of yours before your bones."
Axelius tilted his head and gave a lopsided smirk. "Sure, come closer. I want to hear more about how scared you are."
"What?" she blinked, confused.
"You’re playing games with me," Axelius continued, stepping forward slowly now.
The boy growled. "Enough talking!" and launched himself forward, throwing a fast punch toward Axelius’s head.
But Axelius moved, faster—his footwork light, his movement smooth. He ducked under the punch and twisted his body, slamming his elbow into the boy’s gut and following it with a hard kick to the leg that sent him crashing to the ground.
The girl gasped and charged with a scream, aiming to tackle him. But Axelius turned, grabbed her arm, and spun her around using her own speed, pushing her into the tree behind him.
She hit the bark with a grunt and slid down, dazed.
Axelius stepped back and cracked his knuckles, breathing steadily now, a cold expression on his face.
"Next time," he said quietly, "don’t mess with someone who has nothing to lose."
Owen chuckled from his shoulder. "Why it’s over already? you want a long fight right?"
Axelius grinned. "Nah, Let’s finish this trial. I’m bored already."
