Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Chancellor’s Daughter
Owen was keeping watch, floating lazily near the corner of the garden wall when he heard a snore that made him glance down, and to no surprise, he found Axelius already asleep with his arms crossed, leaning back against the stone wall like it was the most comfortable bed in the world, and for a moment Owen just stared with a tired sigh "Unbelievable..."
and giving Axelius a sharp slap on the cheek.
Axelius jolted awake, blinking rapidly as he rubbed the spot Owen hit and looked confused for a second before realizing what happened, then he gave a lazy laugh and said,
"Sorry, the party was just so boring I guess I passed out," and although he tried to sound casual, there was a bit of a smirk on his lips.
Owen frowned , clearly not impressed, then reminded him that he had told Ellory he would be back soon with her birthday gift, and Axelius blinked again like he had forgotten, before grabbing Owen with both hands like a plush toy and saying, "It’s in you of course, now open the inventory."
Owen rolled his eyes but listened, and with a little hum, a glowing screen appeared in front of them, listing everything stored inside the inventory, and Axelius looked through the long list filled with things like piles of gold coins, rare crystals, magical jewelry, enchanted objects, and ancient crowns, while quietly thinking about what kind of gift would be good for a girl like Ellory.
As Axelius was still scrolling slowly and making faces at some of the shinier but less useful items, Owen suddenly pointed at one entry and made a little bounce in the air, saying, "That one’s perfect for her,"
and with a quick tap, he brought out a soft-glowing object that floated gently in front of them.
It was a music box, carved like a blooming flower with delicate petals of crystal that shimmered with faint dream-like light, and as Axelius took it in his hand, he gave a small nod and said, "Alright, this will do."
Just as Axelius was about to step fully into the garden again, the Duke’s large hand rested on his shoulder and gently pulled him back, and with his usual calm yet commanding voice, he said, "Ah, here he is," as though he had been looking for him all along and knew exactly where to find him.
Standing in front of them were three people who clearly didn’t belong to the normal nobility crowd; their posture, their clothing, and the way people nearby glanced at them with cautious respect made it obvious they were high-ranking, and even without the Duke saying a word, Axelius knew these weren’t just anyone.
"This is Chancellor Albrecht Virelen," the Duke said, his tone steady as he gestured to the man in the dark purple coat lined with gold, his silver hair neatly tied back and his blue eyes sharp but polite, "an old ally of mine and someone who serves directly under the King."
Beside the Chancellor stood a tall woman with soft features, her dark red dress flowing elegantly as she gave Axelius a small smile that felt oddly warm in the middle of all this cold politeness.
"And this is his wife, Lady Helena Virelen," the Duke added, before finally gesturing to the small girl standing a step ahead of both adults.
She had long blonde hair tied with a green ribbon and clear green eyes that stared directly at Axelius without blinking, like she wasn’t shy at all but simply waiting for him to speak first. Her dress was a soft cream color with a faint rose pattern, and everything about her from posture to expression screamed perfect noble upbringing.
"She is Lady Elena Virelen," Chancellor Albrecht said, his voice softer now as he introduced his daughter, who gave a flawless curtsey with practiced grace, saying in a small voice, "It is nice to meet you, Lord Axelius."
Axelius returned the bow automatically, one hand at his stomach, the other behind his back as he had done earlier, but as he looked into her face, something inside him itched with recognition, and he frowned slightly. Her face looked familiar.
Owen just above Axelius’s shoulder in his small blue slime form, leaned close and muttered quietly into his ear, "Psst... hey. That’s the girl you stomped on the foot earlier, remember?"
Axelius’s eyes widened, and he whispered back, "No way. That brat?"
"She just looks different now, idiot," Owen said with a smirk in his tiny voice. "She was throwing a tantrum back then. Now she’s in full innocent mode."
Axelius blinked again, trying to make sense of it. "But she looks like... I don’t know. She looks like she couldn’t even raise her voice, let alone scream in public."
"That’s nobles for you," Owen said smugly. "They can lie with their faces. That girl was red-faced and yelling when you stepped on her, but now? Look at her. Like a flower that never even gets mad."
Still confused and a little suspicious, Axelius gave a polite nod and glanced at the Duke, wondering if they were done—but instead, the Duke cleared his throat and said in a tone that left no room for argument, "Why don’t you walk with Lady Elena for a while, Axelius? I believe you two might find the company enjoyable."
Axelius stared at him for a moment, trying not to let the deadpan disbelief show on his face, but he could already feel Owen laughing silently beside his ear. "Enjoyable," Owen whispered mockingly. "Yeah, like stepping on a landmine is enjoyable."
Chancellor Albrecht smiled lightly, clearly picking up on Axelius’s hesitation, and said, "Lady Elena has taken interest in the young lord attending today. I believe a short walk in the garden would be pleasant, don’t you think?"
Lady Marianne said nothing, but her green eyes remained calmly on Axelius, hands folded neatly in front of her, waiting.
Axelius gave a slow nod, saying politely, "Of course. I’d be honored."
He stepped forward, letting the girl walk beside him, their steps quiet as the murmurs of curious nobles started again around them, and while on the outside he kept a calm, noble-like expression, inside he was groaning—and Owen was having the time of his life.
