Chapter 478: Chapter 478 Guo Jinnian

After much thought, Tong Yao decided to give up on that idea.

Firstly, it was too risky, and she knew nothing about it. If something went wrong, the consequences for a woman like her could be unimaginably tragic.

Secondly, even if nothing went wrong, her parents and Si Chen would be very angry if they found out what she was doing.

After weighing all the options, Tong Yao gave up on this aspect of the business.

However, she couldn’t think of any other quick ways to make money because she didn’t have much in hand.

With nothing much to do at home, Tong Yao called Deng Wenwen to hang out, but Wenwen said she had to pick up her cousin who was visiting from out of town. Seeing as Tong Yao had nothing else to do, she decided to go along.

Wenwen’s aunt was from Jiang City where she met her husband while working as a rural intellectual youth. After getting married, they decided to settle down there, and they had five children. This cousin was the third child and was currently twenty-five and unmarried.

Being unmarried at this age was unusual in the countryside. While the villagers gossipped, Wenwen’s cousin remained nonchalant and lived her life on her own terms. She was an assertive and independent young woman.

According to Wenwen, her cousin had a knack for business. She made a lot of money reselling clothes in Jiang City and was probably in Kyoto to explore new opportunities.

Tong Yao was very interested in Wenwen’s cousin. While they were waiting at the railway station, she couldn’t help but ask a few more questions, "When did your cousin start doing business?"

"Around twenty I guess!" Wenwen answered after a moment’s thought. "If I remember right, her family tried to arrange a marriage for her with a man from a well-off family. She didn’t like him so she ran away, started scavenging and selling junk to make money.

After accumulating some wealth, she ventured into the clothing reselling business, made a lot of money, and even purchased a house in the city. Strangely, she doesn’t seem to care about getting married at all."

Tong Yao didn’t see any problem with remaining unmarried at the age of twenty-five, "I think it’s great to focus on a career before settling down. At twenty-five, she’s still young. With society evolving, more women will marry later or may even choose not to marry at all."

Just as she finished speaking, someone nearby chimed in.

"I share the same views as you."

Tong Yao turned around and saw a neat, short-haired girl who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.

The girl was at least 1.75 meters tall. Her outfit complemented her haircut, she wore a gender-neutral attire, and appeared chic and spirited.

As Tong Yao and Wenwen were sizing her up, the girl laughed and gently ruffled Wenwen’s hair, "So, you don’t recognize me anymore?"

At that, Wenwen’s eyes lit up as if she finally recognized the girl, and she cheerfully exclaimed, "Cousin! It’s really you! Why did you cut your hair so short? I didn’t recognize you."

Given that they lived far apart, Wenwen had only seen Guo Jinnian three or four times, and it had been four years since they had last seen each other.

Guo Jinnian chuckled lightly, her voice clear and hearty, "I think long hair is a nuisance. Short hair is easier to manage."

She turned to Tong Yao, "Is she your friend?"

"Yes, she’s my friend and my boss." Wenwen introduced them with a giggly smile, "Cousin, this is Tong Yao, my best friend. She, like you, is ambitious and career-driven, and passionate about making money."

Indeed, every word Wenwen said resonated deeply with Jinnian. As a fellow woman with a strong business acumen, she had an irresistible appeal.

Jinnian was straightforward and candid, just like Tong Yao. The two hit it off immediately and settled down to chat in a nearby restaurant.

Tong Yao even shared a bottle of beer with her. Over dinner, Jinnian spoke about her purpose of visiting Kyoto.

She was indeed checking out if there were any worthwhile opportunities in Kyoto.

She had been reselling clothes for a while, but since the beginning of the year, more people had entered the business, making it increasingly competitive. Jinnian had saved some money over the years and was looking for a new business to invest in.

She was tired of selling clothes and thought that with relatives in Kyoto and a variety of potential business opportunities, it would be the perfect place to explore next.

Tong Yao admired her for her audacity. It wasn’t often that you came across a young woman who was willing to travel around doing business.

Curiously, she asked, "Why didn’t you open a clothing store?"

"I think opening a shop is too much hassle. There are too many procedures and you have to hire workers, rent a shop, and so on. I prefer the quick money I make from reselling when I don’t have to worry about anything. I love the nature of this business."

Jinnian felt opening a shop was troublesome. In contrast, reselling was easy. She could easily sell the cloth she procured to other traders.

Tong Yao’s eyes lit up, "Do you have any ideas in mind about what you want to do next?"

Guo Jinnian’s present thought was similar to hers- she too wanted to earn money fast.

"I still want to do reselling, but I haven’t decided what to sell yet."

Jinnian didn’t hide anything from Tong Yao. Seeing that Tong Yao seemed interested in the reselling business, she asked, "Would you like to join me?"

Even though they had just met, she felt a strong connection with Tong Yao.

"Sure!" Tong Yao agreed readily, "To be honest, I was thinking about a quick-money business myself. I was considering going abroad to trade, but the risks were too high so I gave up."

It was just a casual mention, but Jinnian seemed interested in what Tong Yao said, "Trading?"

It was a fresh term for Jinnian.

Noticing her interest, Tong Yao explained the nature of the trading business.

Jinnian’s eyes grew brighter as she listened.

"Being able to earn so much in one go is very profitable. "

Tong Yao nodded, "Indeed, it is profitable. However, the risks are real. Every year, there have been news about tragedies. If you’re unlucky, you could lose your life."

"Right." Wenwen agreed emphatically, "Cousin, please don’t entertain such dangerous thoughts. We’re not desperate for money."

Feeling that Wenwen was intruding on their conversation, Jinnian remembered how Tong Yao mentioned that she lived alone. She asked, "Would it be convenient for me to stay at your place? We can sit down and have a detailed chat in the evening."

"Of course." Tong Yao readily agreed, "We can go back to my place later and drop your luggage."

"Alright." Jinnian nodded briskly without any hesitation.

Wenwen was dumbfounded, "Cousin, my mom asked me to pick you up. How am I going to explain to her if I lose you?"

"I will visit aunt tomorrow." Jinnian replied.

The main reason for her visit to Kyoto was to do business; visiting her aunt was just a sideshow.
