Chapter 216: Chapter 215

"Duoyu, stop it."

Upon hearing the voice, Xu Zhiqiang quickly came over and picked up Xu Duoyu.

He even considerately closed the kitchen door for Xu Niannian and Jin Yu.

Xu Niannian looked at the tightly shut door, blinked, and her bright eyes flickered with crumbling emotions.

She covered her face with an "oh" sound, "It’s over, I’m so embarrassed, it’s all your fault."

Xu Niannian punched Jin Yu without any good humor.

Jin Yu was also awkward, mainly because the mother-in-law and father-in-law were still outside, and they must have heard everything.

The two of them procrastinated in leaving the kitchen, with Xu Niannian keeping her head down all the while.

Jin Yu, on the surface, seemed unfazed by the incident.

The dinner table was unusually quiet.

It was Chen Xiaorou’s arrival that broke this silence.

Chen Xiaorou and Xu Zhiqiang had originally entered the house one after the other.

She had heard Xu Zhiqiang calling for Mom and Dad in the yard and was a bit reluctant to go in, hesitating for a long time before finally reaching the doorway.

Xu Niannian’s eyes lit up, finally finding an opportunity to shift and break the awkward atmosphere.

"Xiao Rou, you’re back? Have you eaten?" Xu Niannian asked with extra enthusiasm as she ran over to pull Chen Xiaorou towards the table.

Seeing Xu Niannian’s eagerness, a smile tinted Jin Yu’s dark eyes.

With Chen Xiaorou joining in, Yang Cuihua and Xu Dawei indeed felt less awkward.

Yang Cuihua even pulled Chen Xiaorou aside for a barrage of questions, and Chen Xiaorou answered each one in detail, as if Yang Cuihua was conducting an endless census inquiry.

Xu Niannian couldn’t help but tug at Yang Cuihua’s sleeve: "Mom, eat the food, it’s good."

The awkward dinner, with Xu Niannian’s encouragement, finally became less awkward.

Jin Yu said he wanted to move out, and it wasn’t just talk—he left after dinner that same night.

Xu Niannian went to the door to see him off.

Jin Yu was particularly reluctant to leave.

"I might be quite busy lately, I guess I’ll be able to visit you once every three or four days," Jin Yu said.

Xu Niannian nodded, without any sign of clinginess, "Yeah, don’t worry, I’m not clingy, you can go."

Jin Yu’s expression darkened immediately: "Are you that eager to see me go?"

Xu Niannian looked puzzled: "When did I seem eager for you to leave?"

Jin Yu pursed his lips, his dark eyes fixated on Xu Niannian, thinking that if she wasn’t eager for him to go, why wasn’t there a hint of reluctance?

As it turned out, he was the only one clinging, and Jin Yu, being an older man, felt a blow to his pride, a question he didn’t dare to ask.

There she stood, delicately in front of him, her beautiful almond eyes shimmering with moisture, causing Jin Yu to stare blankly.

"Alright, you better go back now," Jin Yu suddenly lowered his voice.

"Okay," Xu Niannian said and turned to leave, but Jin Yu pulled her back in one swift motion.

Xu Niannian placed her hands on his shoulders, leaning her body back to create a slight distance between them.

"What are you doing?" she asked the awkward man laughingly.

As she laughed, her brows and eyes curved like a crescent moon in the dark night sky, bright and sly.

"You’re leaving just like that?" Jin Yu asked in a husky voice, leaning down to whisper in her ear.

Jin Yu, experiencing love for the first time, didn’t know the ways of romance, nor a girl’s heart, let alone subtlety.

He could only treat her with all of his passion and sincerity.

He just wanted to be with her.

Suddenly, Xu Niannian felt that their relationship was developing too fast; they had become intimate so soon after starting to date.

It felt like they were lovers of many years, familiar with each other. Yet, unlike lovers of many years, they still maintained a freshness in their relationship.

Xu Niannian noticed his ears had turned red again, a deep red, engorged with blood.

Such a complicated man, sometimes he was like a hooligan, but at other times, he was incredibly simple.

The next morning, after breakfast, Xu Zhiqiang and Chen Xiaorou went to the shop and specifically asked Xu Niannian if she was going too.

They said that during the past few days she wasn’t there, many customers had asked specifically for the dishes she cooked.

Xu Niannian declined, saying she needed another couple of days of rest to take her younger brothers to register at the school and to go see Xu Sisi.

She didn’t even know that Xu Sisi had started school in the county city.

After hearing this, Chen Xiaorou and Xu Zhiqiang could only go to the shop resignedly.

Just as they left, Yang Cuihua pulled Xu Niannian into the house.

The movement was a bit like guarding against a thief.

Once inside the room, Xu Niannian said with a laugh, "Mom, what are you doing?"

Yang Cuihua’s face was stern, "Baby Nian, why did you let that Chen Xiaorou stay here?"

Seeing her straight face, Xu Niannian thought Yang Cuihua might be objecting to having an outsider stay with them, possibly feeling unhappy inside.

She quickly explained, "Chen Xiaorou is in a special situation. She is an employee at my shop and pretty handy. When she first arrived, she didn’t have any money, so I let her stay for a month first. When she gets her salary, I’ll have her move out."

Chen Xiaorou was not a bad girl, not the greedy and entitled kind. Besides, her frequent help at home had indeed made Xu Niannian’s life much easier.

Originally, Xu Niannian planned to pay her extra and would let her continue to stay there if she wished.

But since Yang Cuihua objected, she decided not to go through with it.

Between her family and outsiders, she would, of course, choose her family.

And this wasn’t a big deal after all.

Yang Cuihua always considered things for her sake. Certainly, she wouldn’t argue about a trivial matter with her mother for the sake of an outsider.

"No, tell her to move out immediately," Yang Cuihua said resolutely, her stance unwavering.

Xu Niannian was taken aback. Yang Cuihua usually didn’t talk to her like this.

"Mom, what’s wrong? Did Xiao Rou do something to upset you?" Xu Niannian asked.

Looking at her naive daughter, Yang Cuihua poked her forehead with annoyance but, afraid of hurting her, did it very gently.

"My silly girl, how can your mom be at ease with you like this? Chen Xiaorou didn’t offend me, I’m afraid she’ll offend you in the future."

Xu Niannian was quite helpless, "That won’t happen. Xiao Rou actually has a pretty good temper, and besides, your daughter isn’t someone who can be easily bullied by anyone."

Seeing that she still didn’t understand, Yang Cuihua decided to make it clear.

"That girl has some looks, and by having her live here, aren’t you just sending Xiao Jin straight into her arms? I’ve told you before, a man as outstanding as Xiao Jin attracts a lot of women wanting to latch onto him. If one day he is taken away by someone else, you won’t even have a place to cry."

Xu Niannian: "..."

So after all this, that’s what she was worried about. Xu Niannian felt somewhat helpless, wanting to tell her that Chen Xiaorou wasn’t that kind of person.

And even if she was, Jin Yu was not; and even if he was somewhat inferior, if Jin Yu really got seduced by Chen Xiaorou, it would still be a good thing.

Wouldn’t that let her see his true colors sooner?

Before she could explain, Yang Cuihua launched into another lengthy monologue.

"Don’t you roll your eyes at me. Your mom is serious here, you better take it seriously. In terms of beauty, that girl certainly can’t surpass you, but men are cheap, with no resistance to women who throw themselves at them. Listen to your mother, kick her out quickly. I’ve eaten more salt than you’ve eaten rice."

Seeing Yang Cuihua’s earnest demeanor while she lectured, Xu Niannian couldn’t help but laugh, grinning she said, "Eating that much salt, mom, wouldn’t you get salted to death?"

"Tsk, why can’t you be serious about anything? Your mom is doing this for your own good, don’t dismiss it."

Yang Cuihua was willing to let Xu Niannian make her own decisions regarding other matters, but when it came to her daughter’s happiness, she had to intervene.

If anyone thought about bullying her daughter, they wouldn’t find even a window of opportunity, let alone a door.
