Reborn in the 70s: Pampered by Regiment Commander -
Chapter 90 - 81 Arrival
Chapter 90: Chapter 81 Arrival
The train carriage carrying the female soldiers was also filled with cries.
In that era, although most girls weren’t only children like the pampered little princesses of future generations, they had mostly grown up under the protection of their parents. Leaving home for the first time, and to such a distant place, not seeing their parents again within a year made it utterly impossible for them not to cry.
The act of "crying" is highly contagious, one affecting two, three affecting four in tandem; eventually, it resulted in everyone crying together, and nobody felt ashamed anymore.
Liang Xiangyang and Zeng Meili apparently were used to such scenes and did not try to console anyone, instead sitting there focusing on the view outside the window, each lost in their thoughts.
Half an hour later, the sobbing in the carriage subsided, and those sitting opposite each other looked at each other with red noses and swollen eyes, feeling instantly much closer to one another.
Luo Xiaoqiong and Chuxia naturally sat together, and their seatmates were familiar faces from the Red Flag Commune—Jiang Xiaodie, Qiao Ningyi, and Sun Shangmei, along with Xue Qinqin.
The six from the Red Flag Commune were all gathered.
On the day of the selection, everyone mingled together. Although they recognized each other, they weren’t close; but now, sharing the same commune, they instantly felt a bond.
"Lin Chuxia, I heard you were almost replaced, right?" Jiang Xiaodie, a girl with a round face and clearly an extrovert, was the first to ask a question that interested everyone.
Chuxia turned her gaze away from the window, concealing her hint of sadness, and revealed a faint smile, "Yes."
Jiang Xiaodie clicked her tongue, "Just can’t believe they had the nerve to do something like that. Sigh, lawlessness."
"Lin Chuxia, when you get to the military, you can’t disgrace our Red Flag Commune," Sun Shangmei blurted out unexpectedly.
"What gives you the right to talk to Chuxia like that? Just make sure you don’t disgrace the Red Flag Commune yourself." In Luo Xiaoqiong’s heart, Chuxia was someone vulnerable who needed her protection, so without waiting for Chuxia to respond, she quickly fired back at Sun Shangmei.
"During the selection, her result was the lowest, am I making this up?"
"How I do in training is my business..." Chuxia glanced at her coldly, "What’s that got to do with you or the Red Flag Commune?" Being a bona fide member of the post-90s generation, getting walked over and still having to endure it was definitely not her forte.
Seeing Sun Shangmei about to burst, Qiao Ningyi quickly held her back, "Alright, alright, everyone say less, let’s not start arguing here and become a laughingstock, okay?"
"Who wants to argue with her? Isn’t it just because we are all from the Red Flag Commune, and once we leave, we should look out for each other and bring glory to the Commune?" Sun Shangmei said resentfully.
Luo Xiaoqiong gave her an unimpressed look, "You’re worrying about things that don’t concern you. Since we were selected, none of us want to be sent back."
"I’m not talking about you; what’s the rush? Unless..." Sun Shangmei sneered with scorn, "Unless you’re her lackey?"
That was a vicious thing to say, and the look in the girls’ eyes turned unfriendly toward Sun Shangmei. Perhaps even she realized she had gone too far and subconsciously shrank back a bit.
"Think whatever you want, but if anyone dares to bully Chuxia, they’ll have to ask if I agree first." Contrary to everyone’s expectations, Luo Xiaoqiong remained calm.
"Chuxia, your relationship with Xiaoqiong is really good. It’s a blessing to have a friend like that," Jiang Xiaodie said with a beaming smile.
Knowing that she expressed her support for her and Luo Xiaoqiong in her own way, Chuxia gave her a serene smile, "Yes, she is one of the people who treats me the best besides my parents."
"To join the army with such a good friend, that’s very enviable," Qiao Ningyi said.
"That’s right, that’s right, I feel envious too." Xue Qinqin was the one who spoke these words.
Feeling ostracized by everyone, Sun Shangmei furrowed her eyebrows but then let it go. In her view, their actions were born from jealousy—since Sun Shangmei had the best physical selection results.
After a while of chatting, Chuxia roughly figured out the character of these girls.
Jiang Xiaodie had a rounded face and big eyes. True to her name, which means ’butterfly’, she was a lively and adorable girl, very endearing.
Qiao Ningyi was slender and tall with a pale complexion, fine brows, and long eyes. She had a quiet disposition with a bit of a chivalrous heart. Her ancestors founded the Qiao Family Fist, and she herself was quite skilled in martial arts.
Xue Qinqin was sturdy and dark-skinned, a clear sign of long-term labor. With six siblings and being the oldest, her personality was somewhat simple and straightforward.
Sun Shangmei, the tallest and most robust among them, gave off a masculine vibe. A bit jealous by nature, she had a strong desire to lead. After being ostracized by the group, she didn’t let others isolate her. Instead, she continuously tried to insert herself into conversations, refusing to give up without getting some advantage.
The situation was similar in other seats as well—being girls, most of them had a bit of comparative pettiness and, thinking about the life ahead, could not help but cautiously explore and study each other.
When the vehicle arrived in Yunshen City, it stopped for about ten minutes, and more than twenty female soldiers in military uniforms came aboard, chattering as they occupied the other half of the carriage.
"So it’s not just us."
"Looks like there’s going to be big competition."
"Yeah, the health station doesn’t need so many female soldiers. Looks like you’ll really get cut if you don’t work hard."
"Being cut would be too embarrassing. Anyway, I’d rather die than be cut."
"Me too, if I get sent back to the village, I won’t even be able to show my face," she said.
"..."
The new group of female soldiers sparked lively discussions in the carriage.
Sun Shangmei looked at Chuxia with a smirk and a glance, "Now you know I was doing this for your own good, right? If you don’t work hard, you will definitely be the one sent back to the village."
"Even if I really get sent back, so what?" Chuxia said indifferently, casting her a glance, "My affairs are not your concern."
"Like a dog trying to bite Lv Dongbin."
"Yeah, I’m Lv Dongbin."
"Pfft!" Luo Xiaoqiong burst out laughing, nudging Chuxia’s shoulder, "Chuxia, you’re pretty quick-witted."
Sun Shangmei, who had been labeled the "dog" instead of "Lv Dongbin," was so angry that she panted with her mouth open, like a toad.
"Serves her right!" Qiao Ningyi felt no sympathy for her, "She’s not the leader, so why act like she’s all that?"
"You..."
"We’re all just jealous of you, okay?" Qiao Ningyi rolled her eyes, "I said it for you, so you don’t have to feel embarrassed."
"You..."
"It’s because we’re jealous of your excellence that we bully you," Qiao Ningyi added another line.
The honest Xue Qinqin stared with her small eyes, looking from one person to the next, finally erupting into a simple, silly laugh.
"Idiot!" Unable to find someone else to take it out on, Sun Shangmei took her frustrations out on the well-meaning Xue Qinqin.
Qiao Ningyi snorted coldly, "Sun Shangmei, your rivals are not just the few of us. The whole carriage is, and even after we reach our destination, there will be other competitors joining in. So, stop fixating on the few of us, okay?"
"Who’s fixating on you? I want to pull you all forward together..."
The dispute turned their faces red and necks thick, but Chuxia, the person in question, was staring out the window, lost in thought.
One could predict, the life ahead would not be short of such conflicts.
And she must no longer expect an easy life. Although her weak body had greatly improved compared to before, she was still regarded as frail when compared to most rural girls.
Therefore, the upcoming time might even turn out to be the darkest period of her life.
All in! No matter what, she had to give it her all. Being sent back and losing face was one thing, but her desire for her parents to have a better life would not be realized either. Thus, in order to live up to her own standards, she had to try her hardest.
Looking up at the sky, Chuxia silently made a wish, hoping that whoever took over her original self would also bring happiness to her parents!
Two more hours passed, and the train came to a stop in City A, the capital of Province A. Everyone got off carrying their luggage, stepping onto a land they could not leave for some time.
Liang Xiangyang and Zeng Meili called everyone onto a large truck. As soon as everyone was seated, the rear barrier of the vehicle was slammed shut, and the truck began to wobble its way toward Army Base A.
Passing through the city center, which seemed bustling to everyone but desolate to Chuxia, and speeding across the empty suburban land, the little female soldiers fell silent. A mix of anticipation and fear for the unknown occupied their hearts, leaving them with little desire to converse.
"We’re here, we’re here! It’s so big! Magnificent! It’s all soldiers!"
Upon entering Army Base A, one of the excited young female soldiers blurted out an utterly pointless exclamation, earning a wave of disdain from the others. The truck then lurched violently, causing everyone to lurch forward in their seats, resulting in a chaotic tangle.
Zeng Meili appeared at the rear, dropping down the tailgate with a "clang," and said, "Off the vehicle, move quickly, everyone."
After sitting for so long, everyone’s legs were a bit numb. Urged on in their haste, those who jumped off in the front hadn’t yet stood up when the next in line landed on them, creating a complete mess.
Sitting at the back, Luo Xiaoqiong, who was disoriented, poked Chuxia, "I just realized you’re quite crafty. Why did you insist on us sitting in the back? So that’s your scheme, haha..."
Everyone preferred to sit in the front to enjoy the view, leaving the back less crowded. The two of them could comfortably stretch their legs, and being amongst the last to disembark meant numb legs and getting crushed were not their concern.
Chuxia gave a wry smile and pointed to the large protective barrier at the back, "You misunderstood. I just wanted somewhere solid to lean against."
Luo Xiaoqiong rolled her eyes, "Alright then, the lazy enjoy the fruits of their laziness."
Finally, they had arrived!
Standing on this land, listening to the powerful shouts and sounds around her, Chuxia still felt a bit surreal. From now on, was she really a female soldier of the People’s Liberation Army?
