Chapter 441: Chapter 305 Reprimand
The second watch arrived.
--------------
Zhou Mikang was not in the interrogation room, to be precise, the interrogation room was locked, and there was no one. Thus, Jing Zhe took Chuxia to Zhou Mikang’s office, which again was empty. The adjacent office that belonged to Zhou Hanliang was also devoid of people.
"Let’s go see Division Commander Xu," Jing Zhe said.
Chuxia nodded in agreement and hurried to follow.
They knocked on the door of Xu Zhenghong’s office, but there was no response. Jing Zhe’s brow furrowed, thinking this situation was unusually odd.
Out of an office two doors down, a female military officer in her forties came out. When she saw Jing Zhe, she smiled and said, "Division Commander Xu is on the third floor."
"Thank you, Director Qi," said Jing Zhe, expressing his gratitude, then led the way upstairs while whispering to Chuxia, "It must be a top leader’s visit, the third floor is a VIP reception area."
Chuxia’s heart started pounding fiercely. Judging by the situation, it seemed like someone of high rank had come. Could there be another problem? She felt a sense of trepidation similar to a startled bird.
At the entrance to the third-floor staircase, two stern-faced soldiers stood guard. As they saw the two arrive, they stretched out their hands to stop them: "Who are you looking for?"
"We’re looking for Zhou Mikang. Division Commander Xu would also do," said Jing Zhe hurriedly, presenting his military officer ID and work card. The soldier on the left took them, inspected them closely, handed them back to Jing Zhe, and signaled for him to step aside.
Chuxia fumbled in her pocket, grinning sheepishly, "I’m an intern sent by the women’s medical team to the 401, and I haven’t been issued a work card yet."
Jing Zhe was taken aback; he had thought she had her work card with her by the way she was acting. "She’s my student. We have urgent business with Regimental Commander Zhou."
The soldier on the left shook his head with an apologetic but stern expression: "I’m sorry, but you can’t pass without identification. Please don’t make it difficult for me. Only you may proceed."
Peering down the corridor, Jing Zhe asked, "Who is visiting?"
After thinking for a moment, Jing Zhe said, "Could you please tell Zhou Mikang that his wife is urgently looking for him?"
The soldier on the left glanced at Chuxia with a look of surprise, and then nodded to his partner before striding inward. Shortly after, he returned with Xu Zhenghong in tow.
As he led the two inside, Xu Zhenghong asked with a puzzled tone, "Coming over at this time, is there some sort of emergency?"
"Yes, Division... Division Commander Xu," Chuxia caught herself just as she was about to call him uncle-in-law, quickly correcting her address to Division Commander Xu, but to others it sounded like she had said "Division Commander Little Xu." The forty-something-year-old soldier standing at the door glanced at Xu Zhenghong, then at Chuxia, and the corners of his mouth clearly turned upward.
"Let me introduce you," Xu Zhenghong said, hitting the soldier on the chest with his fist. "This is my niece by marriage, Zhou Mikang’s wife."
"Oh, this is our family’s little stubborn head’s wife?" The soldier greeted Chuxia warmly with a smile, "Just call me Uncle Luo."
"Hello, Uncle Luo," said Chuxia, her eyes darting to Xu Zhenghong, hoping he could clue her in on how exactly Uncle Luo was related to the Zhou family.
Xu Zhenghong explained, "His son is Luo Gaoqiang, who grew up playing naked with Zhou Mikang."
Chuxia’s gaze returned to Uncle Luo, "Uncle Luo, you didn’t attend the wedding banquet, did you?"
"I was unable to come back in time, but my wife and Gaoqiang were there," replied Uncle Luo with a chuckle, then looking at Xu Zhenghong, "This daughter-in-law of stubborn head Zhou, she’s going to accomplish great things in the future."
Chuxia blushed deeply at the praise: "Uncle Luo, are you mocking me or complimenting me? What greatness do I have that you can see?"
"It’s in your unreserved manner when you meet people; that assures you’ll achieve great things," he retorted.
"Uncle Xu, where is Zhou Mikang?" Jing Zhe, who had been silent until now, asked.
"You little rascal, it’s been so long and you act like you don’t recognize me. Have you really forgotten me?" Uncle Luo complained while giving Jing Zhe a firm shove, "What did I ever do to offend you?"
"Uncle Luo, I have important matters to attend to, I’ll play with you later," answered Jing Zhe, looking towards Xu Zhenghong, "Uncle Xu, how’s the case with the Xiao family going? I’m one of the witnesses, you should be able to give me some information, right?"
Xu Zhenghong gestured towards a door inside, suggesting Jing Zhe and Chuxia to go see for themselves.
The door was ajar.
An elderly man around sixty was sitting face to face with Zhou Mikang.
"...Did you really make a mistake?" Just as they stood outside, they happened to hear the elderly man asking this question.
"That’s right."
"You..." The elder slapped the table with his palm in anger, "As military personnel, making an unauthorized arrest without instructions, and you still think there’s nothing wrong?"
"If I hadn’t acted then, my wife would have been in danger."
"How serious was the danger?"
"It was life-threatening."
"Nonsense, that father and son had no intention of taking her life."
"They might not have intended to take her life, but what they wanted was to make her life worse than death, and that’s even more despicable and vile than killing her!"
"You..."
"I’ve always respected you, and if you blame me for this matter, then I retract my respect for you."
"What would you do if I asked you to kill your wife?"
Hiding behind the door, Chuxia shuddered. When had she offended such a strange uncle who now wanted to kill her?
"Unless you kill me first, no one can kill her."
"I thought you were going to say ’kill me first’."
"I wouldn’t dare."
"Is there anything you wouldn’t dare to do?"
"Of course."
"Are you deliberately trying to infuriate me to death?"
"No."
"You..."
"Have a drink of water before you continue scolding."
The elder was so angry that he knocked over the cup: "Spare me your crocodile tears."
"Now I am the mouse and you are the cat."
"How come I didn’t notice?"
"..."
"Zhou Mikang, I value talent, but that doesn’t mean I will tolerate your actions without limits. This time, what you did was really outrageous.
Mobilizing the military on your own initiative, relying on your influence to mobilize the police force—if we don’t punish you for this, the other party will not let it go easily, do you understand?"
"Understood."
"You..." The elder sighed heavily, "You’re not happy unless you cause trouble for me, I see that clearly now."
"It’s not like that, I’m just protecting my wife. As a husband, if I can’t even protect my own wife, what else can I do?"
The old man tapped on the table with his hand: "I’ve become a bit interested in your wife. What kind of girl can make you change entirely."
"I’m simply fulfilling my duty as a husband."
"If everyone fulfilled their duties like you do, would our army still be manageable?"
"Yes!"
"Yes, what yes?" The elder grabbed the cup and threw it at Zhou Mikang, "You’re just too audacious. Every time there’s trouble, I clean up your mess, so you don’t take causing trouble seriously. If I make this easy for you this time, my name’s not Sun..."
Watching as Zhou Mikang sat there straight, letting the cup hit him hard on the forehead, Chuxia unconsciously touched her own forehead...
