Chapter 390: Chapter 265 Seeking Marriage
The second watch of the night arrived.
------------
In a small alley of Canghe District, Cheng Guo carried a net bag of apples in his left hand, and another bag of white sugar, peach crisps, and canned goods in his right hand, walking shoulder to shoulder with the charming and beautiful Li Xiaoru.
As they approached the familiar neighborhood, Cheng Guo suddenly stopped, "Xiao Ru, take another good look at me, do I look alright?" Today was the day he officially met Li Xiaoru’s parents, Father Li and Mother Li, after establishing their relationship. Though he had grown up before their eyes, today was different, and as they neared the entrance, his heart felt like it was about to leap out of his throat.
Li Xiaoru was nervous too, and she really stopped to take a look at Cheng Guo, wearing black pants and a blue jacket, with a crew cut, his somewhat pale face, and a pair of eyes staring at her filled with anxiety... This was the Brother Guozi she had liked since she was little, and she was about to marry him... Involuntarily, Li Xiaoru’s cheeks blushed, she nodded slightly to disguise it, and quickened her pace.
Cheng Guo took a deep breath and hurried after her.
The Li family.
Li Father, Li Linqing, and Li Mother, Li Xinwan, sat on the sofa, idly chatting with Li Xiaoru’s young friends, Jiang Dabao and Yao Sini, their minds elsewhere.
Glancing at the time, Jiang Dabao stood up, "Uncle Qing, Aunt Wan, Xiao Ru and Brother Guozi should be arriving soon, Sini and I will go down to welcome them. It’s been quite a few years since I last saw Brother Guozi; I really miss him."
"Go on, go on," said Li Xinwan with a wave of her hand, standing up only to sit back down again.
Li Linqing said with a trembling voice, "Don’t panic, we watched Guozi grow up, what’s there to panic about?"
"Who’s panicking?" Li Xinwan gave her husband a disdainful look. "Clearly, it’s you who’s panicking; you can’t even speak properly."
"Heh heh..." Li Linqing laughed awkwardly, "I’ve been looking forward to this day for too long. Guozi is a good boy. We know him through and through. Big Brother Cheng and Big Sister-in-law Cheng are also good people. They’ll definitely treat Xiao Ru well. Marrying her to Guozi, I am at ease; I am finally at ease."
"I am at ease too," sighed Li Xinwan softly, with a trace of sorrow still visible in her eyes.
"Xinwan..." Li Linqing placed his large hand on Li Xinwan’s arm, "Xiao Ru will be happy."
"I know."
"She is our daughter; she will definitely be happy."
"Yeah."
"Cheer up."
"I know." Li Xinwan bit her lip hard, holding back her tears.
"Today is a good day; don’t make it difficult for the children," Li Linqing patted her back and stood up to go outside, "I’ll go have a look too; you take some time to adjust your emotions."
As the door closed, the tears that Li Xinwan had been holding back for a long time rapidly fell. Thinking of her daughter and future son-in-law who were about to enter, she quickly went to the bathroom to grab a towel and gently wiped the tear streaks from her face.
The woman in the mirror was still beautifully attractive, with delicate eyebrows, bewitching eyes, a straight nose, and red lips, not to mention the curves that not even the loose clothing could hide, each feature exuding a fatal attraction to men.
If she could, she would not want such a face; aside from misery, this face hadn’t brought her any other benefits.
Biting down on her lip until the taste of blood spread in her mouth, Li Xinwan felt the hurt and regrets in her heart dissipate bit by bit. With a smile to her reflection, she stepped out of the bathroom, breathed a long sigh, and took another look around the room. Finding no faults, she simply opened the door, prepared to go downstairs to greet her future son-in-law.
Hearing the voices getting closer, she stood smiling at the top of the stairs.
Li Linqing, who was walking upstairs with his arm over Cheng Guo’s shoulder, looked up to see his wife smiling. He was momentarily stunned, then said, "Brother Guozi, your Aunt Wan also came out to greet you. See, everyone has missed you."
"Aunt Wan, you’re still so beautiful," Cheng Guo said as he quickly climbed up the steps, bowed to Li Xinwan, and handed her the gift he brought, "Just a small token, please accept it, Aunt Wan."
"Look at you, a grown man now," Li Xiaowan’s eyes began to feel sore, "Are your mom and dad well?"
"Yes, they’re fine. They’d be here too if it weren’t for Xiao Ru and I needing to follow the traditional procedure," Cheng Guo smiled, "When I left this morning, my parents walked a long way with me before they reluctantly went back home."
"Really, they are just too much, being old neighbors and old friends, where’s all this formality coming from? They should have just come over. Sigh, I really miss them."
"Aunt Wan, let’s go inside to talk; you can’t just forget all about us just because you’ve seen Brother Guozi," Da Bao called from below.
"Look at me, I’ve gotten confused," Li Xinwan quickly ushered Cheng Guo into the house, then turned to glare at her husband and daughter, "You didn’t think to remind me, honestly."
Li Xiaoru laughed, "Mom’s getting more and more spoiled."
Before the two families had split, they had intended for the two children to pair up. So, with Cheng Guo coming to visit, Li Linqing and Li Xinwan had no intention of finding fault with him. In just a brief conversation, they agreed to his proposal and decided to invite Cheng Guo’s parents over the next morning to discuss the wedding. The younger couple was responsible for getting their paperwork and registration done as quickly as possible. As for the wedding arrangements, they would be left to the elders to manage.
Cheng Guo’s parents, being impetuous by nature, didn’t wait to adhere to formalities at home once their son had completed the task of proposing. They arrived at Li family home that afternoon.
However, according to local customs, such matters should not be discussed in the afternoon, so the group just sat down to catch up. The younger generation, meanwhile, headed to another room to frolic.
In the years they hadn’t seen each other, Cheng Guo and Li Xiaoru’s childhood friends Da Bao and Fourth Daughter had gotten married. They already had a three-month-old bundle of joy—though Fourth Daughter, being tall and clad in thick clothes, didn’t show any sign of pregnancy from her appearance.
"Xiao Ru finally got her wish," Fourth Daughter said with a laugh as she looked at Cheng Guo, "Brother Guozi, you don’t know, but these past few years when you were away, Xiao Ru always seemed down. Ever since she connected with you, she’s gotten her spirit back."
Da Bao raised his hand, "I can attest to that; everything my wife said is true!"
Cheng Guo slapped his forehead, "Right, I just got carried away reminiscing, I forgot to ask—why aren’t you two at work?"
Da Bao and Fourth Daughter exchanged glances, then both laughed together, "We took the day off to welcome you!"
Li Xiaoru revealed the truth, "Brother Guozi, don’t listen to their nonsense. They both work at a glass factory, and they’re both on the same shift, they’ve got a night shift today, it’s not time for their work yet."
"Which glass factory?" Cheng Guo asked.
"Jinghua..." Da Bao chuckled stupidly, "It’s just two bus stops away from your hospital. A few days ago, after hearing from Xiao Ru that you’re in Ward 401, I got so envious that I intentionally got off the bus and walked around your hospital, but, didn’t dare ask about you. I was afraid your colleagues would find out and tease you."
"What’s there to tease about?" Cheng Guo looked speechless and then thought of Wu Jingbo mentioning he wanted to put flowers in a big-bellied vase one day, so he asked, "Da Bao, are you on the production line or in security?"(To be continued.
