Chapter 349: Chapter 240 Different Past Stories from Everyone’s Mouth
"Alright, alright, I was wrong..." Mei Yitong saw Jing Zhe really got angry, so he stopped teasing him, "I was just joking, and you took it seriously." He said with a smiling look at Chuxia, "Sister Chuxia, your brother apologizes, don’t mind the rudeness of someone like me."From the conversation between Jing Zhe and Mei Yitong, Chuxia had already concluded that Mei Yitong and Xiao Yuwen were from the same faction; therefore, as the wife of Zhou Mikang, she naturally wouldn’t be friendly with her husband’s foes.
But given the other party’s attitude, if she responded in kind, it would not only look bad but also be unreasonable. As she struggled with how to handle the situation, Jing Zhe spoke up, "What’re you calling ’sister’? Is ’sister’ yours to call? Zhou Mikang is older than you by a month, you should be calling her ’sister-in-law’."
Mei Yitong’s smile froze on his face. After a moment, he said, "Then why do you call her ’little sister’?"
Jing Zhe glanced at him sideways, "Chuxia is my grandfather’s adopted granddaughter, what should I call her if not ’little sister’? Zhou Mikang should properly be calling me ’brother’, you know?"
"That’s your business, let’s keep our matters separate," Mei Yitong said as he looked at Chuxia, "Sister Chuxia, you sure like eating deep-fried dough sticks, huh?"
"What I love to eat is none of your business," Chuxia finally put down her dough stick and spoon, "Was it you who arrested my husband?" She surmised this from Jing Zhe’s tone.
"No..." Mei Yitong hurriedly explained, "You can’t say it like that, I’m just a soldier under Director Xiao, following orders. It’s not my fault, just like you have to listen to your teacher, I have to listen to my leader."
"What’s the use of all this rambling? Didn’t you still arrest him?" Chuxia scoffed, "You’ve really got no shame, arresting my husband and then pretending to be a good guy here. Can you even pull that off? Or, are you thinking of using this chance to tarnish my reputation? People shouldn’t be so unprincipled, right?"
"No..." Mei Yitong helplessly scratched his head, "That little mouth of yours really is sharp. Alright, I can see you don’t welcome me here, so I won’t bother you anymore. You siblings enjoy your meal." He said as he stood up, patting Jing Zhe on the shoulder, "I’ll come find you at the hospital later, I really have something."
"There’s nothing to discuss between us," Jing Zhe said indifferently as he glanced at him, "The Jing family will not side with anyone, you might as well give up on that hope."
"I’ll talk to you later, don’t act like you know everything," Mei Yitong said and, waving his paw like a fortune cat at Chuxia, "Sister Chuxia, see you later."
Chuxia curled the corner of her mouth but remained silent.
"He’s just shameless like that, don’t take it to heart..." Jing Zhe helped Chuxia to a dumpling on her plate, "Don’t just eat dough sticks, try this; it tastes really good."
Chuxia then picked up a dumpling and took a bite, her eyes brightening as she nodded, "Mmm, delicious, truly delicious, my dad would definitely love this. Next time my parents come, I’ll bring them here to eat."
Jing Zhe smiled and nodded, "Good, let Zhou Mikang bring you guys. Just so you know, it’s not that I’m being stingy, but rather, I worry that Zhou Mikang might get jealous."
"Brother, are you always finding ways to provoke Zhou Mikang?"
Caught in the act, Jing Zhe awkwardly smiled, "It’s impossible for me to suddenly treat that guy as a real brother. In elementary school, he, Mei Yitong, and I were best friends. But by the time we were in middle school, each of our families had their allegiance, and our relationships gradually faded.
Comparatively speaking, I was still on good terms with both of them, but they turned into opponents, competing in studies, chasing girlfriends.
Ye Meiru liked Mei Yitong, but the Ye Family favored Zhou Mikang, presumably to avoid any surprises, which is why they sent both of them abroad for study.
Back then, Zhou Mikang was straightforward and naive. I told him that Ye Meiru didn’t genuinely like him, and he wouldn’t listen at all, thinking I was just speaking up for Mei Yitong. That was when he and Mei Yitong fell out completely, or more precisely, when Mei Yitong broke it off with him entirely."
After Zhou Mikang and Ye Meiru broke up, Mei Yitong took great pleasure in their misfortune for a while and would humiliate Zhou Mikang with harsh words whenever he saw him.
However, over time, as Zhou Mikang focused solely on his work, Mei Yitong’s attitude changed. Once during a casual chat, he even admitted that his hatred for Zhou Mikang was unreasonable, as the other party was merely following his family’s advice.
Had it not been for Zhou Mikang, or if he had been the one who was dumped, by that logic, he should have been grateful. But that’s just how people are, even when they realize it, it’s hard for them to apologize verbally. Moreover, with differing political views between their families, they were destined not to become friends, so the matter was dropped.
At one gathering, they happened to bump into each other. Mei Yitong hesitated for a long time before he approached and greeted Zhou Mikang. However, Zhou Mikang turned and walked away, which only deepened the rift between them. Our relationship among the three of us completely fell apart.
Actually, Mei Yitong isn’t a bad person at heart. If he were like Xiao Yuwen, he could have dealt with Zhou Mikang before Grandpa Wan sent someone over."
After listening to Jing Zhe’s explanation, Chuxia was somewhat puzzled, "From what you’re saying, you consider Mei Yitong a friend, so why were you so cold towards him just now?"
"The current situation is too sensitive, I don’t like friends using each other."
"I see, his attitude towards you isn’t usually as good as it was today, right?"
"Exactly, which is why his intentions were too obvious."
"In that case, he’s not really a good person."
"OK, if you say he’s a bad person, then he is," Jing Zhe laughed, pointing at Chuxia’s empty bowl, "Want another serving?"
"No need, I’m full..." Chuxia glanced at the time, "At this hour, everyone probably hasn’t had breakfast yet, let’s take a few portions to go."
Jing Zhe smiled bitterly, "Chuxia, are you uncomfortable because I mentioned Zhou Mikang’s past?"
"Not at all." Chuxia smiled at him, "You’re overthinking it. Zhou Mikang’s past doesn’t concern me in the slightest, why would I be upset?
I’m just overwhelmed by so much information at once, and I understand the difficulty of being caught in the middle. So, I hope I don’t make things difficult for you either."
"Are you upset about my neutrality?"
Chuxia sighed quietly; Doctor Jing indeed had a sharp perspective. She was indeed displeased with his approach, which might relate to her personality. She particularly disliked fence-sitters, and although Jing Zhe wasn’t exactly that, she just didn’t like those who stand in the middle and don’t take sides.
"A little, but I can understand."
"Chuxia, there are some things you still don’t understand. Being neutral isn’t due to fear; it’s necessary. One day, you will understand," Jing Zhe said as he stood up, "I’ll go get a few takeout orders to bring home. Wait here for me."
Feeling somewhat awkward, Chuxia just smiled at him and stayed silent. (To be continued. If you like this work, please visit Qidian (qidian.com) to vote for it, or to buy a monthly pass. Your support is my greatest motivation. Mobile users please visit m.qidian.com to read.)
