Chapter 307: Chapter 217 Accidental Encounter
Passed midnight, I got held up with something during the day. Another Chapter is almost coded but not yet edited. It will be posted a bit later.
-------------------------------------------------
Hearing Zhou Mikang talk about Wang Meifeng, Chuxia couldn’t contain her curiosity and nudged him, "Tell me the truth, what were you thinking at the time?"
"What do you think I should have thought?"
"I..." Chuxia scrutinized Tongzi’s expression and stopped beating around the bush, "If I asked you to help her, would you have helped?"
"No!"
The other party answered without hesitation, leaving Chuxia speechless for a moment. Tongzi, the driver, finally looked normal again. That’s more like the temper of his family’s Third Young Master. No way should a little girl have everything her way!
"Why won’t you help?" Chuxia glared at Zhou Mikang, her frustration evident. "All that talk about treating me well after we got married was just a lie. We’ve barely married, and it’s already come to this!"
"What has it come to?" Zhou Mikang raised an eyebrow at Chuxia. "Come on, tell me, what have I done?"
Chuxia huffed, "You didn’t even think before rejecting my request. You just don’t respect me at all!"
Zhou Mikang looked at her with a half-smile, "So you mean to say, if Wang Meifeng came to me for help, I should have immediately agreed to help her to show respect for you?"
Chuxia itched with irritation, "Don’t twist my words! What I mean is, if I ask you to help her, you should consider my opinion before telling me whether or not you’ll help, rather than outright refusing without any thought!"
"You look smart enough, so why do you always do foolish things?" Zhou Mikang frowned at her. "Lin Chuxia, are you sure you want to help that kind of woman?"
"I didn’t say I want to help her. My point is, you should consider my opinion."
"If it’s the right thing to do, of course I’ll consider it. But if I know it’s wrong, do I still need to think about it?" Zhou Mikang stared at Chuxia seriously, "Didn’t I consider the matter with your cousin? Doesn’t that make it clear to you?"
"Clear about what?" Chuxia was getting confused and stared blankly at him. "Can you speak more clearly? What am I supposed to understand?"
"Lin Chuxia, just now you were telling me your family has too many relatives, some worth helping and some not. So why are you confused now?"
"Annoying!" Chuxia glared at him resentfully, "Why is it so difficult to communicate with you? I didn’t say that Wang Meifeng definitely deserves help, but whether she’s worth it or not, you must take my opinion seriously. Understand?"
Zhou Mikang looked utterly baffled, "If you know she’s not worth helping and I agree with you while you’re being so unreasonable, won’t you be the one to suffer in the end?"
Chuxia snorted coldly and turned her gaze out the window, not saying another word. But in her heart, she bitterly resented his lack of tact. Wasn’t all she wanted just a bit of respect? Did he have to get so worked up and argue about it?
Indeed, getting married is a bothersome thing, and adjusting to cohabitation is just as annoying. Forget it, she wouldn’t bother talking about this with him anymore. Since their marriage wasn’t based on love, why obsess over it? She was really losing her mind!
Zhou Mikang’s frown deepened as he poked Chuxia, "Are you angry?"
Chuxia’s head tilted to the side, leaving him with a clear view of the back of her head.
"Unreasonable!" Zhou Mikang was getting angry too. "I’ve been indulgent because you’re younger, but you can’t be this illogical, right? It’s for your own good, so why get mad?
Can’t you see Wang Meifeng’s true intentions? If you really agreed to help her, how would you face your relatives in the future?
Your aunts won’t think fondly of you, and if they’re unhappy, can your mother be happy? If your mother isn’t happy, can you be happy?
This is such a simple concept, why don’t you get it? And here you are, acting childish with me. I think I’ve spoiled you too much, making you forget who you really are."
"You..." Chuxia panted with fury. So in his eyes, she was just a child, a simpleton who would pay the person who sold her!
Seeing Chuxia in such a state, Zhou Mikang softened a bit. Arguing like this only three days into their marriage wasn’t good. If the elders at home saw it, they would be worried, and besides, everyone was still unfamiliar with Chuxia; it wouldn’t be good for her either. Thinking this, he wanted to coax her, but as the words reached his lips and he saw her long face, his own frustration surged. This child was just too unreasonable!
Wang Meifeng was clearly using her, so why was she so eager to please? With the nature of his job, it was inevitable that he wouldn’t be able to be with her every day. What if someone took advantage of her and hurt her?
No, he couldn’t let her go just because he felt sorry for her.
Then, Tongzi also scowled and stared outside, falling silent.
The driver glanced from one to the other through the rearview mirror, deeply conflicted. He unconsciously slowed the car down, hoping they would cool off before reaching home.
"Stop the car!" Chuxia suddenly shouted.
The driver hesitated, slowed down even more, but didn’t dare to stop.
"Stop the car!" Chuxia called out again.
"Can you stop making a fuss?" Zhou Mikang was also infuriated. He was never someone with a good temper, and what he hated most were girls who were whiny and troublesome. He had taken a liking to Chuxia because of her forthrightness, but now she was showing this petty side of hers, which caused his suppressed anger to flare up.
"Who’s making a fuss?" Chuxia frowned and gave him a look, "Hurry up and stop the car, I just saw someone who looked a bit like my second aunt."
"Really?" Zhou Mikang’s expression became serious, "Little Wang, reverse the car."
"Yes!" The driver quickly engaged the reverse gear and backed up rapidly.
In those years, there were few cars on the road, making reversing hassle-free. In the blink of an eye, Chuxia caught sight of the two figures they had passed.
A short and chubby middle-aged woman wearing black pants and a blue overcoat, carrying a bundle, was followed by a short girl dressed in the same black pants and blue overcoat, with an old, faded green military backpack. Both of them had messy hair, and their faces were patchily black and white. After taking a closer look, Chuxia confirmed that they were indeed her second aunt, Lin Xiaohua, and her cousin, Zhao Qiyan!
"It’s them!"
As soon as Chuxia’s words fell, the car screeched to a halt beside the mother and daughter.
However, the two of them seemed to have seen nothing and heard nothing, and they continued to walk on.
Chuxia quickly pushed the car door open and got out: "Second Aunt, Sister Qiyan!"
The two people ahead continued to walk without uttering a sound.
Zhou Mikang had also gotten out of the car by then and looked at Chuxia puzzledly: "Are you sure you didn’t mistake them?"
"I..." Chuxia was also uncertain now, but, could there be others in this world who looked so similar? Especially, two people both bearing such resemblance!
Although second aunt and Zhao Qiyan were both not kind to her, for the sake of her grandparents and her uncle, she couldn’t just see them and pretend she didn’t. After all, they were strangers in this place, and if something happened to them, she would never be at peace.
So, whether it was them or not, she had to make sure. She quickened her pace, ran in front of the mother and daughter, took a careful look, and confirmed again that it was Lin Xiaohua and Zhao Qiyan!
"Second Aunt, Qiyan, what brings you here?"
"We’ve been looking for you!"
While she was observing them, they too were observing her, and then, almost at the same time, both sides spoke out.
"Chuxia, wuuu..." Zhao Qiyan grabbed Chuxia’s hand, crying a heartrending cry, while Lin Xiaohua sat down on the ground and started bawling as well.
"Second Aunt, Sister Qiyan, please stop crying..." Chuxia turned her head to consult with Zhou Mikang, "Should we take them to the ancestral home?"
"Mhm." Zhou Mikang nodded his head and glanced at the howling Lin Xiaohua, "Second Aunt, please get in the car. I will take you to find Uncle."
"What about me? Why aren’t you calling me?" Zhao Qiyan protested while crying.
Zhou Mikang didn’t even glance at her, as he helped Chuxia pull Lin Xiaohua up and assisted her into the car. Then he went around to the front and sat in the passenger seat, instructing the driver: "Little Wang, head back to the ancestral home."
"Yes!" Little Wang responded and turned the car around, secretly relieved inside. It was fortunate to have come across these people; otherwise, the awkward return trip with just the two might have caused untold worry for the entire family.
Perhaps due to the mood, he found Lin Xiaohua and Zhao Qiyan particularly agreeable.
"Second Aunt, Sister Qiyan, what’s...?" After the pair stopped crying, Chuxia scrutinized the mother and daughter, filled with confusion.
Lin Xiaohua pulled out a crumpled handkerchief and, with a loud "honk," blew her nose, then looked at Chuxia: "Xia, tell me, do you not consider your second aunt as family?"
"Second Aunt, can you just speak plainly?" Chuxia did not take the bait. Truthfully, second aunt’s sharp and harsh words had left a deep impression on her, and asking her to falsely claim that she cared for them as family was something she simply could not do.
"I knew it, you hold a grudge against your second aunt, and by extension, you resent Qiyan too. Chuxia, the Xue family’s situation isn’t Second Aunt and Qiyan’s fault.
It was the matchmaker who approached our home first. Second Aunt didn’t know that it was you the Xue family was interested in and agreed to let Qiyan meet them. Later, it was Xue Ligang who guaranteed to get Qiyan enlisted.
Tell me, if your mother received such news, would she stop you from enlisting? You understand this sort of thing, right?" Lin Xiaohua said while sneaking peeks at Zhou Mikang.
"Nobody is blaming Second Aunt and Sister Qiyan for what happened; you’re both overthinking..." Chuxia looked at her indifferently, "If I hadn’t run into you here, worried that you might have suffered, I wouldn’t have bothered at all. It’s a fact that we don’t share much affection, so Second Aunt, there is no need for you to berate me over trifling matters. You can’t demean me!"
She was truly angry now. Instead of answering Lin Xiaohua straightforwardly, who was deliberately being perverse, Chuxia decided to indulge her. After all, couldn’t she play the game too?
