Chapter 300: Chapter 212: The Bet
"My aunt finally found such a talented disciple as you; how could she ever let you go?" Song Yanqi giggled behind her hand, "She’s probably worried that one day you’ll be the one to leave her behind."
Chuxia’s eyes crinkled with her smile, "If you ever find out that the teacher is worried about that, please tell her for me that as long as she doesn’t let go of me, I will definitely not let go of her."
"Third sister-in-law, I like your personality," Song Yanqi’s smile suddenly warmed, "I was supposed to attend your wedding too, but that day, there was an old man whose health took a turn for the worse, and I couldn’t get away, so I missed it. As a punishment, I’ll treat you and Third Brother to dinner sometime, how does that sound?"
Chuxia agreed heartily, "I’ve grown up always playing the guest, but never the host. Thank you, Doctor Song, I’ll take you up on your offer without hesitation."
Seeing the two joking and laughing as they descended, Old Master Zhou, who had wanted to ask about Wang Meifeng’s condition, couldn’t help but tease, "Xiao Song, you’re not trying to steal your aunt’s student, are you?"
"Grandpa Zhou, look at what you’re saying. I would dare to compete with anyone but my aunt, and also..." Song Yanqi nodded towards Zhou Mikang’s position with her chin, "If I really did that, I reckon Third Brother would knock me out with a single punch."
"Hehe..." Old Master Zhou chuckled, shaking his head and changing the subject, "Little Wang’s condition isn’t serious, right?"
"It’s just a cold from going back and forth between hot and cold. She’s got a bit of a fever. I gave her an injection and prescribed some medicine, and I reckon she’ll be almost better by tomorrow. I’ve explained all the specifics," Song Yanqi replied, focusing on her profession. She explained in such detail partly to make sure everyone seated understood Wang Meifeng’s condition.
Hearing this, Luan Xiaoxiang nudged Luo Xiaoqiong, leaning in to whisper, "It looks like we might have wronged her. She can’t fake a fever, can she?"
Luo Xiaoqiong pursed her lips, "You’re too naive. She’s brought it upon herself, sweating like that and then running outside. How could she not catch a cold?"
Luan Xiaoxiang scratched her head in confusion, thought for a while, and then nodded, "Hmm, that’s possible."
"Not just possible, it’s certain."
"Don’t think of her so badly. Maybe she really did catch a cold earlier."
"Didn’t you hear the doctor? It’s a cold from the heat and the chill."
"Right, after sweating that much and then going out into the wind, how could she not catch a cold? But why, given that she was so hot, would she wrap herself up in a blanket?" the naive Luan Xiaoxiang suddenly came to a realization. Then, forgetting to lower her voice, she drew the attention of everyone at the table. In a panic, she grabbed Luo Xiaoqiong’s arm, unsure of what to do.
Although she didn’t quite understand why Wang Meifeng would do that, she felt it probably shouldn’t be disclosed to everyone. But now, in her carelessness, she had let it slip, and... She sneaked a glance at Old Lady Zhao and, seeing her nod smilingly, she felt slightly less frantic.
Just then, as Chuxia was escorting Song Yanqi back, Old Lady Zhao instructed, "Chuxia, go ask your mother and your aunt to come down for dinner."
"Yes." Chuxia promptly headed upstairs, "I’m full. I’ll accompany Chuxia," Luo Xiaoqiong said as she stood to leave, casually pulling Luan Xiaoxiang with her.
"I’m full too." It was only after Chuxia and Luo Xiaoqiong had disappeared that Luan Xiaoxiang finally caught on and stood up to follow after them.
Lin Baojuan rubbed her forehead in discomfort, previously unaware, and only now realizing that her daughter, when compared with Chuxia and Xiaoqiong, was indeed naïvely fearsome.
Chuxia went upstairs to the room where her aunt and Wang Meifeng were staying and saw her aunt sitting opposite her mother, Zhao Yulan, with red eyes, clearly having cried.
Wang Meifeng lay with her back to them, motionless.
"Auntie, mother, let’s go down for dinner," Chuxia said.
"Yulan, you go down first. We shouldn’t be rude," Zhao Yuying urged Zhao Yulan, "Having raised such a daughter, I am truly ashamed to go down. Little sister, if you appreciate the good I’ve done as your eldest sister, please go down quickly."
Moving forward, Chuxia said earnestly to Zhao Yuying, "Auntie, just tell me what to do, and I’ll do it."
"Chuxia..." Zhao Yuying’s tears, which had stopped, started to fall once more.
Suddenly sitting up, Wang Meifeng called out urgently, "Mother!"
Zhao Yuying turned to look at her daughter, her eyes filled with sorrow, disappointment, compassion, and... guilt...
"Chuxia, I’m glad to hear you say that. Your auntie hasn’t loved you in vain all these years..." She paused for a moment, then stepped forward to embrace Chuxia, "Whatever your auntie tells you to do, you’ll do it, right?"
