Chapter 220: Chapter 169: The Awkward and Divine New Roommate

```
The second watch has arrived, and I seek all kinds of support from my readers, while also asking for your opinions. Nuan doesn’t want to involve too many training scenes anymore, as these kinds of scenes have become boring for many of you. The current segment is primarily about shaping the personalities of a few roommates. With character introductions nearly complete, a wedding is just around the corner. If you agree, please leave a comment.
After dinner, Chuxia sat there, feeling restless. She tried her best to calm herself down, but it was to no avail.
She worried about her father’s health and that her mother wouldn’t sleep well at night. She wanted to accompany them but as a new recruit, she had already aroused dissatisfaction...
"Lin Chuxia... Lin Chuxia..."
It wasn’t until she was poked that Chuxia came back to her senses. She saw Zhang Erniu standing next to her with an awkward smile.
"Are you looking for me?" asked Chuxia, puzzled.
"I... I’ve been transferred to Squad Three," Zhang Erniu said, twisting the hem of her clothes, "Someone... someone wanted to go to our squad, so they transferred me to Squad Three."
It was only then that Chuxia noticed the empty spot where Xiaoqiong’s belongings had been, now filled with someone else’s luggage roll.
"Who went to your squad?" Liu Meijun raised her head from her book, full of curiosity, "Who has the clout to just change squads like that? Who’s this big shot?"
All eyes from Squad Three’s dorm turned toward them, and Zhang Erniu grew even more nervous: "It seems... it seems to be the new girl, she’s pretty and has a good relationship with Rao Xue. No one else wanted to swap with her, so I... I did."
Qiao Ningyi frowned. "Was this not arranged by Captain Zeng?" Erniu had just told her that she’d been transferred to Squad Three, and Qiao Ningyi thought it was Zeng Meili’s decision.
Zhang Erniu shook her head. "No, they told me to come here first and said they would go talk to the captain later and that I shouldn’t worry about it."
Yang Xiaoli couldn’t help but say, "Zhang Erniu, you are a soldier; you must follow the discipline of the military. How can you just do whatever they say? Even if you were to be transferred, it must be voluntary."
Zhang Erniu quickly nodded in agreement: "Yes, I’m willing!"
"Pfft!" Yuan Mengmeng couldn’t help but laugh and turned to Yang Xiaoli, "Xiaoli, it looks like you’re meddling too much."
"Okay, let’s pretend I didn’t say anything." Yang Xiaoli also felt her interest fade. She had never seen such a pushover before. Indeed, she was meddling unnecessarily.
"No, it’s not that..." Zhang Erniu looked around nervously, her eyes slightly bewildered, "I know you’re looking out for me, but I really want to be in Squad Three. I want to stay with Lin Chuxia."
"Why?" Chuxia was utterly confused. When had she become so popular?
Embarrassed, Zhang Erniu smiled, "I think... I think I can improve my results with you."
Chuxia was taken aback. Okay, she was getting ahead of herself; it turned out the other girl just wanted someone poor in performance to accompany her...
"Hahaha..., birds of a feather, truly." Yuan Mengmeng laughed out loud, feeling anything but fond of Chuxia, especially since she had become close with Yang Xiaoli. Given the chance, Mengmeng always took the opportunity to take a dig at Chuxia, and how could she miss such a perfect opportunity?
"I... I..."
Zhang Erniu stuttered, looking like a frightened bunny, which softened Qiao Ningyi’s heart. She stepped forward and pulled her aside: "Come with me to the captain’s office. We can’t decide on this kind of matter privately."
"Okay," Zhang Erniu responded, drooping her shoulders as she followed Qiao Ningyi out the door.
Sun Shangmei, who had always been grateful to Chuxia for helping her, proactively approached her: "Lin Chuxia, I’ll join you for training from now on. As long as you’re willing to endure, your results will definitely improve!"
"Thank you," Chuxia said, not outright accepting or rejecting the offer. But the earnest Sun Shangmei wouldn’t give up so easily, staring straight at her, "From now on, half an hour after dinner, I’ll take you to the training ground."
She was determined to improve her physical condition and would use every opportunity to do so, but the idea of setting a fixed time for training was something she disliked.
She didn’t want to have to ask for leave from Sun Shangmei if anything came up later. No doubt, Sun Shangmei was well-intentioned, but her overpowering personality could be too much pressure.
"Sun Shangmei, I appreciate your concern, but there’s no need for you to join me. You see, I have this problem that when I train with someone whose performance is much better than mine, I get very nervous and make mistakes. You’ll get frustrated watching me, and I won’t train well. How about this: you assess my performance every half month to see if I’ve improved. When my results aren’t so far behind yours anymore, then you can train with me, yeah?"
Sun Shangmei was very pleased with Chuxia’s words, her smile blooming across her face, though she politely demurred, "Chuxia, my results aren’t as good as you make them out to be."
"I’m telling the truth." Chuxia bowed slightly to her, "Hero Sun, please spare me. Let me improve quietly; that’s the greatest help you can give."
After a moment’s thought, Sun Shangmei happily agreed but added a caveat: if Chuxia did not improve, she would penalize her.
"That’s fine. If there’s no improvement, you can punish me as you see fit." Chuxia naturally had no objections to this; as long as Sun Shangmei wasn’t monitoring her like a hawk, she was willing to agree to almost any condition.
"I’m off to read." Sun Shangmei scratched her head and sighed, "Ah, if only studying was like training, where the effort you put in corresponds exactly to what you get out of it."
"You should be glad her academic skills aren’t strong; otherwise, she wouldn’t let you off so easily," Liu Meijun whispered to Chuxia as soon as Sun Shangmei was out of earshot.
Chuxia nodded in agreement and took a long breath of relief. Lucky, lucky... Uh, but Sun Shangmei was a child who sought progress; was this really fair of her?
Not long after, Qiao Ningyi came back with Zhang Erniu.
"Did they tell you to stay or to move back?" Yuan Mengmeng asked eagerly.
Zhang Erniu glanced nervously at Qiao Ningyi and didn’t dare to make a peep.
"I’ve never seen anyone as pathetic as you! If I knew this would happen, I wouldn’t have taken you there, you’re killing me!" Qiao Ningyi shouted at her angrily, then stormed out of the dormitory again.
The others looked at each other, confused. What was Squad Leader Tongzi’s deal? They had known her for a while, and it was the first time they saw her so furious, even when Yuan Mengmeng and the others had picked on her in the past, she had never lost her temper this badly.
"You..." Yuan Mengmeng pointed outside, "what did you do to tick her off?"
Zhang Erniu’s face scrunched up, and she was on the verge of tears.
Lin Mengran stared at her irritably: "What exactly happened? Spit it out. I can’t stand your sulking!"
Qu Xiaojing nodded in agreement: "Yeah, just say it already. It’s not easy to get Squad Leader that mad."
"I... I don’t know why Squad Leader got so mad."
"..." Everyone fell silent... even Yuan Mengmeng... fell silent...
Chuxia looked at her: "They let you stay in Squad Three, right?"
"Mhm."
"Then start packing your stuff and don’t just stand there." Chuxia also disliked the kind of personality that couldn’t vent out their frustrations, but considering the other party had come to join her, she still extended the courtesy of a host.
"Mhm." Zhang Erniu smiled gratefully at Chuxia, then slouched over to the bed and began packing her things with light, careful movements.
"When you walk..." Liu Meijun slouched her shoulders forward, mimicking Zhang Erniu, "why do you always slump your shoulders like that?"
"I... I just do that when I’m nervous."
Liu Meijun smiled kindly at her: "We’re sisters in the same dorm. What do you have to be nervous about?"
"Squad Leader is mad at me, and I..." Zhang Erniu quickly glanced upward, "I... I don’t want to go to Squad Four."
Yuan Mengmeng’s mischief awoke: "Did the people in Squad Four bully you?"
Zhang Erniu shook her head, then nodded: "Yeah."
Yuan Mengmeng rolled her eyes: "How about this, you wash my clothes, and I’ll make sure you stay in Squad Three forever, how about that?"
"Yeah!" Zhang Erniu replied eagerly and looked at the others, "Yours too, I’ll wash."
"Have you no shame?" Lin Mengran glared at Yuan Mengmeng with disgust, "You actually have the nerve to bully her like that?"
"I was just saying it, she agreed on her own. Can you blame me?"
Lin Mengran huffed: "Save that talk for the ghosts!" Then she looked at Zhang Erniu, "You’re here to be a soldier, not to serve others. I don’t care what brought you to Squad Three, but I hope you’ll stand tall and take care of yourself, work on your own things. Making yourself worthy to stay here, that’s what’s really important!"
"Mhm." Zhang Erniu responded meekly, "I’ll wash your clothes too."
"..." Lin Mengran opened her mouth but didn’t utter a word - infuriated!
Yuan Mengmeng was almost laughing hysterically; the others were also shaking with laughter, "Zhang Erniu, you are just too cute." Yang Xiaoli said, laughing so hard she was pounding on the bed while giving Zhang Erniu a thumbs up.
"I..." Zhang Erniu hunched her body, looking utterly lost. Chuxia felt a pang in her heart. What kind of home environment had this child grown up in to be so timid?
Patting her shoulder, Chuxia softened her voice: "Lin Mengran means well, you’re not here to be a maid. Everyone has hands and feet; wash your own clothes. Just make sure yours are clean. Now that you are in Squad Three, you are one of us. Squad Leader is kind-hearted and won’t hold a grudge against you."
"Yeah, I will help you wash when I’m free."
Chuxia: "..."
"Hahaha..."
Laughter once again flipped the roof of Squad Three.
It was now basically confirmed by everyone that Zhang Erniu used to wash the clothes for Squad Four, and it had deeply ingrained in her the belief that washing clothes was the way to avoid being bullied...
When Qiao Ningyi entered, seeing everyone with their little faces flushed red with laughter, she was puzzled and turned to Sun Shangmei, who was nearest to her: "What happened? The laughter from Squad Three can be heard miles away."
"You were angry and stormed out earlier, so we asked Zhang Erniu..." Sun Shangmei explained in detail what had just happened, leaving Qiao Ningyi bewildered and feeling that her anger earlier now seemed quite trivial...
