Chapter 59: Chapter 58: 100 Goods Market
Grandma also has some skills, inherited handmade soap passed down from ancestors. She usually sells them in a room by the door. After the policy changed, she made some to sell.
Grandma usually relies on this to make a living.
When Lin Wan came in, she saw Grandma sitting inside the shop, fanning herself with a sunflower fan. Seeing someone enter, she quickly struggled to get up from the rocking chair and asked, "What would the young lady like to buy?"
Grandma turned seventy-five this year, slightly plump, giving the impression of being very friendly and easy to talk to.
Lin Wan smiled awkwardly and glanced around the room. Besides a wooden shelf against one wall filled with soap wrapped in oil paper, there was only a table and a rocking chair.
On the table was a large porcelain teapot with the slogan "Serving the People." Beneath it was a red iron thermos. In one corner of the room, there was also a rotating fan. Lin Wan remembered this fan.
This should be the fan Han Yi bought Grandma earlier this year, but she was reluctant to use it, and only after they got married did she begin to use it.
Han Ying, noticing this young girl staring around the room without speaking, asked again, "Are you here to buy soap?"
Lin Wan then withdrew her gaze and looked at Han Ying, saying, "I want to buy a few pieces of soap."
"Take a look and choose what you like; they’re all 20 cents each. If you have tickets, you can use food tickets or fabric tickets—pick what you like," Han Ying said with a smile. Usually, neighbors come by to buy, but today it was rare to meet someone unfamiliar.
Lin Wan nodded towards Han Ying and looked at the wooden shelf. There were three kinds: one was black soap beans, another was large, opaque yellowish soap, and the third was brown-yellow. There was also hair oil in a glass bottle.
Though not many varieties, Lin Wan knew the soap Grandma made had much better stain-removing power than those sold in the market, and the black soap beans could be used as facial cleansers without making pores large.
Grandma was older, couldn’t keep up with the times, and didn’t know how to package and market it; if managed well, she could easily make a fortune from this.
Lin Wan bought two pieces of each except the hair oil. Knowing tickets were used more in the city, she gave some food tickets. Without saying much, she left after purchasing.
She wanted to chat more with Grandma but didn’t know how to start. This visit, she also wanted to see how Grandma was doing. Mainly, she wanted to try her luck to see if she might bump into Han Yi.
In her past life, she was quite disdainful towards Grandma. She usually stayed at school, and even on Sundays when she returned, she showed little warmth; sometimes even asked Grandma to help wash clothing and cook.
Now, facing Grandma, Lin Wan always felt a sense of guilt. It wasn’t easy for the old woman, painstakingly raising Han Yi, only to have a granddaughter-in-law who disliked her—it must have been hard on her.
But she never talked about these feelings with Han Yi as a result, leading Han Yi to believe they got along well as grandmother and granddaughter.
Today, she didn’t encounter Han Yi, feeling slightly regretful, yet still rather happy inside.
On her way back, Lin Wan went to the supply and marketing cooperative to get some fabric, she still had fabric tickets, to make two clothes for Mom and her brother. Upon entering, she noticed batches of floral fabric on the counter.
Lin Wan bought a few meters of white, indeed measured fabric, and some sandy cotton fabric with tiny printed flowers on a white background, plus some dark fabrics. There were also remaining cotton fabric pieces in the store, perfect for making pajamas.
As she was near the shopping mall, Lin Wan took a stroll around, wandering from the first to the third floor. On the second floor’s corner, she discovered a counter selling yarn, filled with yarn—it seemed due to the summer, not many people were around. The salesperson inside appeared drowsy and indifferent when seeing customers.
