Chapter 24: Chapter 23: Han Yi’s Family

After the dumplings were served, Lin Wan sat outside, knitting a sweater while watching the rain. She also... listened to the conversation between the two.

"Dad, if he doesn’t want to come back, just let him be. Why insist on him returning to our place? Mom won’t be happy either if he does." The young manager said reluctantly.

"How can a child of our family drift outside? I’ll explain it to your mom. Han Yi is capable; having him back is good for our family. Stay in touch with him whenever you can, to foster some brotherly feelings. Otherwise, you’ll become estranged when you meet."

"...Got it." The young manager agreed verbally, but deep down, he was dismissive.

So it was Han Yi’s father and brother. In her past life, she didn’t really know Han Yi. Although they were married for two years, he never talked to her about his family situation. She only knew he came from a single-parent family, living with Grandma since childhood, and his mom had remarried, so he wasn’t very close to them.

Thinking about it now, it seemed laughable. Her past self seemed so oblivious.

While Lin Wan was lost in thought, the father and son had already finished eating.

"Waiter, the bill, please."

"One pound of food tickets or one dollar and four cents."

The young man gave her a one-pound national food ticket, a special supply, and left right away.

When Lin Wan finished clearing the table and returned to the kitchen, Han Yi had already finished a plate of dumplings.

Seeing Lin Wan enter, Han Yi stood up with a slightly awkward look on his usually stern face and said, "I left in a hurry and didn’t bring any money. I’ll come back another day and make up for it."

In her memory, Han Yi was always a cold, reserved man who rarely spoke. She never knew what his smile looked like. It was rare for Lin Wan to see Han Yi’s endearing side, and she couldn’t help but chuckle, "No need to pay, it’s complimentary... thanks for your help that day."

This made Han Yi even more embarrassed. He glanced at the sky outside and thought of the father and son who had just left. Looking into Lin Wan’s eyes, he said, "I might have to stay here the whole afternoon."

"No problem," Lin Wan said, as she found a clean cup and poured him some water.

She thought about keeping him company in the kitchen but reconsidered, feeling it might not be appropriate.

Although society was improving, it still wasn’t open enough for a young man and woman to stay alone in a room for hours.

Lin Wan also noticed Han Yi’s unease and was afraid of annoying him.

Reluctantly, Lin Wan stepped back into the store, lowered her head, and continued knitting her sweater.

About an hour later, Liang Hongmei woke up. As soon as she entered the kitchen and saw a man sitting still in the room, she thought she’d seen a ghost. Startled, she screamed.

Han Yi quickly stood up, unsure how to begin, and stiffly called out, "Auntie."

Lin Wan heard the noise and hurried over, calling out, "Mom."

"Xiao Wan, who is this?" Liang Hongmei asked, still shaken, patting her chest.

"Mom, this gentleman often eats at our store. It’s raining today, so he’s here to take shelter from the rain." Lin Wan explained simply.

Seeing the person move and realizing he wasn’t a ghost, Liang Hongmei gave Han Yi an "Oh" but was puzzled as to why he’d hide in the kitchen. "Well, Mom, it’s time to prepare the dumpling filling for tomorrow. We’re out of meat at home," Lin Wan quickly interjected, pulling Liang Hongmei away.

"...Oh, I forgot about that. I’ll go buy some meat now," Liang Hongmei said as her suspicion was interrupted, and she rushed indoors to get money.

"Why don’t you sit in the store?" Lin Wan suggested to Han Yi.

Han Yi nodded and followed Lin Wan into the shop.

Due to her husband’s situation, Liang Hongmei didn’t have a good impression of people like Han Yi. So she didn’t want to see them either.

Once inside the store, Han Yi sat in a corner, fearing the father and son might pass by and spot him.

Lin Wan, on the other hand, was sitting at the store entrance, her hands moving quickly as she knitted her sweater.

Feeling a bit bored, Han Yi’s eyes soon wandered to the sweater Lin Wan was knitting.

He noticed the girl knitted swiftly. Her fair and slender fingers weaving the yarn made her hands look very beautiful.

He remembered that few people knitted sweaters like these. When he was studying in S City, he rarely saw anyone wearing them and was quite envious back then.
