Chapter 98: The Sobs
So, the sirens finally cut through the cold night air...
Blue and red lights flashed against the townhouse walls as the officers swarmed the property, securing the scene.
Inside, Diane was standing beside Gabriel, her arms wrapped tightly around herself as she watched the officers lift Rachel’s body onto a stretcher, a white sheet draped over her.
Arthur hadn’t let go of Gabriel since the moment they had taken him from Rachel’s grasp.
His small fingers clung to Gabriel’s shirt as if letting go would send him spiraling back into danger.
Diane wanted to hold him, to reassure him, but she knew she had to wait.
They weren’t done yet.
A group of officers escorted Adrian toward a police car, his hands cuffed behind his back.
Blood still stained his jaw where Micha had knocked him out, but it did nothing to dull the venom in his eyes.
"You’re all murderers," Adrian spat at everyone...
He thrashed against the officers’ grip. "You think this is justice? You killed her!"
Diane inhaled deeply, but Gabriel was the one who spoke.
His voice was cold, unaffected. "Rachel made her choice."
Adrian let out a bitter laugh.
"Is that what you tell yourself when you bury your mistakes?" He turned his glare to the officers. "You want a real case? Start looking at Gabriel Frost! He’s a killer!"
The nearest officer, a tired-looking detective, raised a brow. "You have evidence of that?"
Adrian sneered, his teeth bared. "Check his hospitals! Check the records! You think all his patients survive? People disappear in his care. He decides who lives and who dies!"
Diane stiffened, her stomach knotting at the accusation.
It was pretty bold of Adrian to speak such nonsense when in her previous life, he was the only murderer.
Gabriel barely reacted.
His expression didn’t change even for a second, his stance didn’t shift at all.
He simply tilted his head a little bit more, watching Adrian with some quiet amusement.
"You really are desperate," he murmured.
"Desperate?" Adrian’s rage was almost tangible.
"You think I’m making this up?" He looked wildly between the officers. "Look into him! Go to his hospitals! Pull the files, talk to the families!" He turned his furious gaze back to Gabriel. "You play God. And they let you!"
The detective scribbled something in his notebook, but his expression was skeptical.
"We’ll look into it," he said in a noncommittal tone.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. "You won’t. Because he owns everything. The police. The courts. He owns this city."
Gabriel’s lips curled into a smirk. "And yet, here you are. In handcuffs."
Adrian lunged, but the officers yanked him back before he could get close.
"You won’t get away with this," he seethed. "This isn’t over!"
Gabriel leaned in slightly, his voice was lowered to something only Adrian could hear. "It was over the moment you ran."
Adrian’s entire body locked up, his breath coming out in ragged pants.
For the first time, Diane saw something other than anger in his expression.
It was finally fear...
Adrian realised—too late—that he had never really been in control.
The officers shoved him into the backseat of the squad car, slamming the door shut.
He continued shouting, his voice muffled by the glass, but Diane wasn’t listening anymore.
She exhaled slowly, willing the tension in her shoulders to release.
"Ms. Walker," the detective turned to her, his voice was way softer now. "We need a statement."
Diane nodded, glancing at Gabriel. "Let’s get this over with."
Half an hour later, Diane and Gabriel were outside the townhouse, finishing their statements under the bright glow of police floodlights.
Gabriel’s was short, precise.
"We came here to retrieve Diane’s brother. Rachel Hoffman threatened his life. A shot was fired, and in the struggle, she was killed."
Diane’s was similar, though her voice was less comforting when she spoke about Arthur.
How Rachel had gripped him too tightly. How she had threatened to take him away forever.
By the time they finished, exhaustion was seeping into Diane’s bones.
Then—
"Diane?"
Diane’s breath stopped in her throat.
Arthur was calling her name...
She turned just in time to see him running toward her, his small legs moved faster than she’d ever seen.
And behind him—Leon.
The moment Arthur reached her, Diane dropped to her knees, gathering him into her arms.
"Oh, darling," she whispered, pressing her lips to his forehead. "You’re safe now."
Arthur clung to her, his little fingers tightened around her jacket.
He didn’t make a sound, but she could feel the way his tiny body trembled against hers.
She rocked him gently, whispering soft reassurances into his hair.
Leon stood above them. He looked at Arthur like he wanted to take all of his pain away, to erase everything that had happened.
Then his gaze met Diane’s, and something broke in his expression.
He sank to his knees beside them, wrapping his arms around both of them. His voice was hoarse, raw.
"I’m so sorry."
Diane’s throat tightened.
Arthur pressed his face into his father’s shoulder, but he didn’t pull away.
Leon exhaled shakily, resting a hand on the back of Arthur’s head. "I should have protected you both better."
Diane closed her eyes for a moment before whispering, "We did what we had to do."
Leon pulled back slightly, cupping Diane’s face in his hands like he had when she was a child.
"You’re stronger than I ever was."
"You don’t have to say that."
Leon gave her a small, sad smile. "Yes, I do."
They stayed like that for a moment, a quiet understanding passed between them.
Then, Gabriel cleared his throat.
Leon’s eyes flew to him, not understanding him.
Gabriel didn’t flinch under his gaze. "He’s safe now," he said simply.
Leon let out a slow breath, nodding. "Because of you."
Gabriel’s face didn’t even twitch, but Diane saw the way his fingers flexed slightly at his sides.
"I told you I’d protect them."
Leon studied him for a long moment, then—finally—he nodded. "You did."
It wasn’t an acceptance. Not entirely. But it was something.
Diane slowly rose to her feet, still holding Arthur.
His little fingers clutched at her jacket, but he didn’t resist when she shifted him into a more comfortable position.
She turned back to Gabriel, exhaustion lined her features. "Can we go home now?"
Gabriel’s eyes softened. "Yeah."
Leon hesitated, glancing at Arthur again. "He’ll need time," he murmured.
Diane nodded. "We all will."
Leon stepped back, allowing Gabriel to lead them toward the waiting car.
As they walked away, Diane could still hear Adrian’s muffled screams from the police car.
Calling them murderers.
Calling Gabriel a killer.
None of it mattered now.
Arthur was safe. Rachel was gone.
And Adrian?
Adrian was exactly where he belonged.
But as she settled into the car, cradling Arthur in her arms, Diane realised that all the people responsible for her pain and death were now gone.
Chapter 100: A Fragile Peace
The car ride home was silent...
Diane kept Arthur wrapped in her arms, his small body was shaking against hers.
She stroked his hair gently, whispering reassurances, but he didn’t respond.
Then, without warning, Arthur broke.
Silent tears turned into deep, gut-wrenching sobs, his little hands clutching at her desperately.
Diane felt his grief, his fear, his exhaustion breaking into her own bones, and before she could stop herself, her own tears spilled over.
She held him tighter, pressing her cheek against his head.
"It’s okay," she whispered, her voice started breaking. "You’re safe, baby. You’re safe."
Arthur didn’t speak. He didn’t nod. He just cried.
Gabriel’s hands tightened on the steering wheel, his jaw clenched as he drove through the empty streets.
He said nothing, but Diane knew—he felt this too.
By the time they reached the house, Arthur had cried himself into exhaustion, his breaths came in soft hiccups against Diane’s shoulder.
Diane, drained from everything, barely registered her own exhaustion before sleep took her, too.
Gabriel parked the car and turned to them.
For a moment, he simply sat there, watching the two of them in the low glow of the dashboard lights.
Then, with a quiet sigh, he stepped out and moved to Diane’s side.
He opened the door carefully, reaching in to lift Arthur first.
The boy stirred slightly but didn’t wake as Gabriel cradled him close, his small hands still gripped Diane’s jacket.
Then, with equal care, Gabriel turned back to Diane.
She was completely asleep, her breathing was so soft, her body curled slightly as if still protecting Arthur.
Gabriel hesitated only for a moment before slipping an arm beneath her legs and lifting her effortlessly into his arms.
She didn’t wake.
As he carried them inside, he pulled out his phone and typed a quick message to Riot.
-GABRIEL: Everything clear?-
A moment later, his phone buzzed.
-RIOT: House is secure. I’m outside. You can leave if you need to.-
Gabriel glanced down at Diane and Arthur, sleeping soundly in his arms.
He exhaled slowly.
Then his phone buzzed again.
A different number.
-UNKNOWN NUMBER: Hurry up. I’m waiting.-
