Chapter 84: The Last Hunt
Evelyn’s hand trembled, but her aim was stable—or it should’ve been.
The muzzle of her gun flashed in the dark, the sound of gunfire split the air as bullets whizzed past them.
Too close.
Gabriel ducked low, shielding Diane instinctively as he pulled her against the stalled SUV.
Riot crouched on the other side, his injured shoulder pressed against the wheel well, teeth clenched against the pain.
"Damn it," Riot hissed. "She’s lost her mind."
"She always was insane," Gabriel muttered, his pulse pounding in his ears.
Another bullet struck the ground inches from his boot, sending dirt flying.
"And she’s a worse shot than I thought."
Diane’s breath came in short, fast bursts, but her brain was forming a plan.
Over Evelyn’s wild gunfire, she heard the sound of the wolves growing louder.
The howls were so chilling and hungry.
They were moving closer, circling the clearing like shadowed ghosts beneath the moon.
Diane’s eyes darted toward the treeline where the wolves’ glowing eyes pierced through the darkness.
Evelyn hadn’t noticed them yet. She was too focused on her blind rage and the three of them.
That’s when it hit her.
"I have a plan," Diane whispered urgently, gripping Gabriel’s arm.
He turned to her. "Diane—"
"Trust me," she said, her voice was way stronger now.
She wasn’t the fragile woman Evelyn thought she had broken. Not anymore.
"What’s your idea?" Riot asked, wincing as he adjusted his hold on his gun.
"The wolves," she said quickly.
"They’re following the blood—her blood. She’s wounded. If we draw her attention and make her move...They’ll go after her."
Gabriel blinked, considering the risks. It was dangerous. But so was sitting there, waiting to be shot.
"It’s a gamble," Riot muttered, but a smirk tugged at his lips. "I like it."
Gabriel nodded, making a split-second decision. "Let’s do it."
Diane pressed closer to Gabriel’s side. "We need to make her move fast and loud. Then we get the car started."
"If it even can start," Riot grumbled, slipping around to the hood of the SUV.
Gabriel’s eyes stayed locked on Evelyn, who took a slow, staggering step closer.
Blood soaked her shoulder and splattered down her arm, but the gun never fell from her hand.
"You really thought you could escape me?" Evelyn spat. "After everything?"
Gabriel stood up just enough to draw her attention.
"You talk too much," he said coldly. "That’s always been your problem."
Her face frowned, and she pulled the trigger again.
The shot rang out, but Gabriel had already moved.
"Is that all you’ve got?" Gabriel taunted, directly enough.
Evelyn’s eyebrows furrowed in rage as she fired again, this time even more uncontrolled.
The bullet struck the rearview mirror, shattering it into glittering shards.
"You think you’re clever?" she snarled, taking another step forward.
Blood dripped from her shoulder, she was moving slower, more erratic.
"You’re nothing, Gabriel. You never were."
Gabriel let out a cold laugh. "Funny—I’ve been doing just fine."
Behind him, Diane crouched beside Riot as he yanked open the hood.
His hands were slick with blood, his shoulder barely functioning, but his fingers worked fast.
"Can you fix it?" Diane whispered urgently.
"Starter’s jammed," Riot muttered through clenched teeth.
"But if I can—ah, screw it." He slammed his fist against the engine block with a grunt of pain.
Gabriel kept Evelyn’s attention locked on him, stepping deliberately out from behind the SUV.
"Come on, Evelyn," he goaded. "If you want me, take the shot."
Her lips curled into a snarl as she raised the gun again.
And then—the wolves howled.
The sound was closer. Hungrier.
For the first time, Evelyn hesitated.
Her eyes darted toward the tree line, where the wolves’ silhouettes shifted through the shadows, circling the clearing.
Gabriel caught the fear in her eyes.
"What’s wrong?" he asked mockingly. "Afraid you’re not the only predator here?"
"Shut up!" Evelyn snapped, but her voice trembled just slightly.
Diane seized the moment. "Hey, Evelyn!"
Evelyn’s head whipped toward her, her gun rising—
"Catch!" Diane snatched a loose piece of metal from the ground and flung it as hard as she could.
It struck Evelyn’s wounded shoulder with a dull thud.
"Aaaaghrr!" Evelyn screamed, staggering backward.
That was all the wolves needed.
A low growl came from the forest, and Gabriel saw the lead wolf...a massive, silver-furred beast come from the night.
Its lips curled back, revealing sharp fangs as it advanced toward the bleeding woman.
"They’re coming," Diane murmured, gripping Gabriel’s arm tightly.
"I know," he said, voice taut. "Riot—"
"Working on it!" Riot growled, delivering another hard strike to the engine.
The SUV shuddered—then roared back to life.
"Yes!" Riot slammed the hood shut and stumbled toward the driver’s seat. "Get in—now!"
Gabriel didn’t wait.
He grabbed Diane’s hand and pulled her into the backseat, his heart pounded against his ribs.
Riot threw the SUV into reverse, tires spun against the dirt.
Evelyn realised too late.
"You’re not getting away from me!" she shrieked, raising her gun with shaking fingers.
A gunshot cracked through the night—but it wasn’t aimed at them.
Evelyn fired wildly toward the advancing wolves.
But blood was in the air, irresistible.
The silver wolf lunged, its teeth flashed in the moonlight.
Riot slammed the gas pedal to the floor.
The SUV fishtailed before catching traction, speeding down the forest road.
Diane twisted in her seat, her breath was coming so fast. "Is she...?"
Gabriel didn’t need to look. He already knew.
"She’s done."
The last image he caught was Evelyn—cornered, bloodied, her screams were loud enough even behind them—before the wolves fell upon her.
And then, silence.
The SUV tore through the darkness, leaving the clearing behind.
Diane exhaled shakily, her hands trembling in her lap.
"It’s over," she whispered, as if saying the words would make them true.
Riot snorted from the front seat, keeping his eyes on the road.
"Not yet," he muttered. "But that’s the last time we’ll see her."
Gabriel reached over and squeezed Diane’s hand, grounding her.
"You saved us," he murmured, pride could be noticed in his voice.
A faint smile touched her lips, but there was something else behind it...like some unease.
The witch’s words traveled through her mind again, louder now.
"The forest..."
And as the forest faded into the rearview mirror, Diane couldn’t shake the feeling that the second person who was responsible for her death was now gone...
"I did it..."
