Chapter 80: The Search Begins
Everyone cheered as the final game began, a sea of bodies looked so full with excitement.
The whistles and cheers traveled through the forest, but Gabriel barely heard any of it.
His eyes scanned the bleachers, the entrance, the back lot—anywhere Diane could be.
She wasn’t there.
His stomach twisted with a sick feeling he couldn’t shake.
Diane was never late, not for something like this.
She should have been by his side, cheering with that fierce, competitive fire in her eyes.
But she was gone.
’Could it be because of the kiss?’ He thought to himself.
Riot jogged up beside him, wiping sweat from his brow.
"Hey, man, have you seen Diane?"
Gabriel’s jaw clenched. "No," he snapped, his heart thudding in his chest. "She was supposed to be here."
Riot frowned, glancing around the field.
"Maybe she’s in the tent. You know how she gets—sometimes she needs a minute."
Gabriel didn’t reply.
He already knew something was wrong.
His gut told him Diane wouldn’t just vanish without a word.
A flash of brown caught his eye, and his gaze locked onto Evelyn, who was standing by the edge of the bleachers.
She was watching him. Smiling.
His blood ran cold.
Without a word, Gabriel stormed toward her, his hands clenching into fists.
Evelyn’s smile widened as he approached, like she was enjoying the panic in his eyes.
"Where is she?" he demanded, grabbing her by the shoulders.
His voice was low and dangerous, each word trembling with barely restrained fury.
Evelyn feigned innocence, her expression was so sweet and smooth.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," she purred. "Why so tense, Gabriel?"
"Don’t play with me," Gabriel growled, shaking her slightly. "Diane. Where. Is. She?"
Evelyn let out a soft laugh. "Relax. Maybe she got tired of all your drama and left. Can you blame her?" Her fingers trailed up his arm mockingly. "You know how fragile she is."
His grip tightened, his patience hanging by a thread. "You did something to her. Tell me where she is, or I swear—"
"Or what?" Evelyn interrupted, tilting her head. "You think you scare me?" She leaned closer, her smile sharpening into something more evil.
"She can’t always be the hero, Gabriel. Sometimes, the hero loses."
Gabriel shoved her back, anger was rising like fire in his veins.
He turned, stalking back toward Riot.
"She’s not here," he said through gritted teeth. "And Evelyn knows something."
Riot’s face hardened. "What do you wanna do?"
"We stop the game," Gabriel said without hesitation. "Now."
Riot blinked. "That’ll cause chaos."
"I don’t care!" Gabriel snapped, his voice was too raw and too commanding. "Diane’s in trouble. I can feel it."
Without waiting for a response, Gabriel strode toward the official’s booth, his heart pounding.
He didn’t care about the game—not when Diane could be in danger.
He grabbed the microphone, his voice booming over the loudspeaker.
"Stop the game!" The crowd murmured in confusion as Gabriel’s voice cut through the noise. "Everyone, stop!"
The referee blew the whistle, and everyone slowed to a halt, confused. Murmurs rippled through the stands.
"Diane is missing," Gabriel continued, his voice tight. "We need to find her."
The panic inside him sharpened into focus. He needed to check her tent.
Gabriel sprinted toward the camping area, his mind racing.
He tore open the flap to Diane’s tent and crouched down. His heart hammered as his fingers found her boots.
They were gone.
Relief surged through him.
She was wearing them—and he had put a tracker inside.
Pulling out his phone, he opened the tracking app and waited for the signal to appear.
"Come on," he muttered under his breath, tapping impatiently.
A faint beep. A location began to form.
"Got you," he breathed, sprinting back out.
But Evelyn was waiting.
She blocked his path, two of her men flanking her.
"Going somewhere, Gabriel?" Her voice was too nice, too calm.
Gabriel didn’t slow down.
He moved to push past her, but the men stepped in, grabbing his arms.
"Let me go," he growled, struggling against their hold.
Evelyn sighed, shaking her head. "You never know when to quit. You really should learn to let her go."
Gabriel’s fury boiled over. "If you’ve hurt her—"
"Relax," Evelyn murmured, gesturing to her men. "Take him."
One of them clamped something cold against his neck.
A sharp sting burned through his skin before his vision blurred.
The last thing he heard was Evelyn’s laugh.
Riot paced outside the official’s booth, scanning the chaos Gabriel had left behind.
His nerves burned with unease. Something was wrong—he could feel it.
Gabriel should’ve come back by now.
He turned toward the camping area, his gut telling him to check on him. Pushing through the crowd, he reached Diane’s tent and froze.
Empty.
"Damn it," he muttered, pulling out his phone. He dialed Gabriel, the call ringing and ringing before going to voicemail.
"Come on, man. Where are you?"
His grip tightened on the phone as a sinking ship made him realise something...
Now both of them were missing.
When Gabriel woke, his head throbbed with a dull ache. His wrists burned where the rough rope bit into them.
He was tied to a chair.
A dark, cold room surrounded him, and in front of him, Diane.
Her head hung low, blood streaking the side of her face. She was still breathing—but barely.
"Diane," he rasped, tugging against the ropes. "Diane, wake up."
A door creaked open, and Gabriel’s blood ran cold as Adrian stepped inside, twirling a knife between his fingers.
"Ah, you’re awake," Adrian said with a smile. "Good. I was hoping you’d join the party."
Gabriel’s heart pounded in his chest. "Let her go," he growled.
Adrian laughed softly, stepping closer to Diane and brushing a strand of hair from her face.
"Why would I do that? After all..." His eyes looked so full of malice. "We haven’t even started yet."
Gabriel’s fists clenched. He wasn’t going to let this happen. Not to her.
"I will kill your father, Adrian..."
