Chapter 78: The Ball And The Kiss
The stadium was so full of energy.
Everything smelled like grass, sweat, and dirt.
This was it—the most difficult game yet-football...
Every player on the field knew what they needed to do.
Diane wiped the sweat off her forehead, glancing around at her teammates.
Riot, Tessa, Gabriel, Evelyn, and the third guy she didn’t know were in one team.
They all were breathing heavily, locked in a tight battle with the opposing team.
The game had been brutal so far.
No one was giving an inch.
Every goal attempt had been blocked, every attack shut down.
The teams were perfectly matched, making it nearly impossible to break through.
Gabriel jogged past Diane, giving her a quick nod. "We need to step it up."
"No kidding," she muttered, adjusting her stance.
She had no idea just how crazy things were about to get...why was she here with Gabriel...playing football...and he was so good at it.
The ball was in play again, and Diane sprinted toward it.
The opposing team’s midfielder had possession, but Riot interrupted, sending the ball rolling toward Gabriel.
He controlled it with ease, dribbling past two defenders before spotting Diane open on the left.
"Diane!" he called, sending a perfect pass in her direction.
She was ready. She dashed forward, stretching her leg out to trap the ball—
And then—
BAM!
Diane was suddenly shoved to the ground, hard.
For a second, the world spun.
The impact knocked the air out of her lungs, and she blinked up at the sky, dazed.
What the hell just happened?
Then she heard a voice.
"Oops," Evelyn said, standing over her with a smirk. "Didn’t see you there."
Diane’s eyes narrowed. "Didn’t see me? I was right in front of you!"
Evelyn shrugged, looking completely unbothered.
"Well, maybe if you weren’t moving so slow, I wouldn’t have run into you."
Diane sat up, brushing dirt off her elbows. "Oh, my bad. I forgot you play like a wrecking ball."
Gabriel jogged over, frowning. "Evelyn, that was unnecessary."
"Relax," Evelyn said, flipping her ponytail. "It’s just the game. She can handle it, right?"
Diane pushed herself up, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, absolutely. In fact, I think I’ll return the favor next time you have the ball."
Evelyn smirked. "Good luck catching me."
Riot and Tessa ran up to check on Diane, but before anyone could say more, the referee’s whistle blew.
"Play on!"
Diane took a deep breath, shaking off the hit. Alright, Evelyn wants to play rough? Two can play that game.
As soon as the ball was back in motion, Diane kept her eye on Evelyn.
The next few minutes were a pure mess.
The teams battled fiercely, neither side willing to give up.
Gabriel was controlling the midfield, Riot was shutting down their opponents like a wall, and
Tessa was moving up the side, looking for an opening.
Then it happened.
Evelyn had the ball, dribbling with her usual confidence, weaving through defenders like they were nothing.
Diane saw her chance.
She sprinted toward Evelyn, closing the distance fast. Evelyn barely had time to react before—
BAM!
Diane didn’t push her, but she did block her path aggressively, forcing Evelyn off balance.
Evelyn stumbled but managed to keep control. She looked up, and for a split second, their eyes met.
Diane grinned. "Oops. Didn’t see you there."
Evelyn let out a sarcastic laugh. "Wow. Original."
"I try."
Riot groaned. "Are you two seriously doing this right now?"
"She started it," Diane and Evelyn said at the same time, then shot each other annoyed looks.
Gabriel sighed. "Can we just focus on winning?"
Diane smirked. "I am focused."
Evelyn flipped her ponytail again. "Same."
The game continued, but the tension between them didn’t disappear.
The Final Moments
The clock was running out. It was still a tie, and both teams were desperate to score.
Then the moment came.
Gabriel sent a perfect pass toward Evelyn, setting her up for a shot on goal.
Diane saw it happening...
She could let Evelyn take the shot.
Or she could stop her.
Her feet moved before she even thought about it.
She lunged forward, blocking Evelyn just as she went for the shot.
Evelyn kicked—
And the ball went flying off course.
The whistle blew.
"Foul!"
The crowd gasped.
Diane looked up and saw Evelyn staring at her, breathless.
"Really?" Evelyn said. "You couldn’t just let me have that one?"
Diane shrugged. "Didn’t see you there."
Evelyn let out a short laugh, shaking her head. "Unbelievable."
Gabriel, Riot, and Tessa ran up, all looking slightly exhausted by the drama.
Riot crossed his arms. "You two good now?"
Diane and Evelyn exchanged a long look.
Then—
"For now," Evelyn said with a smirk.
Diane smirked back. "Game’s not over yet."
Evelyn’s team was awarded a penalty kick, and Gabriel was chosen to take it.
He stepped up to the ball, inhaling deeply. This was it.
One shot.
One goal.
He took the shot.
The ball soared through the air—
The goalkeeper dove—
The sound of impact went through the stadium—
And then—
Silence.
Did it go in?
Everyone held their breath.
And just like that, the game hung in the balance.
The moment the ball hit the net, the stadium was drowning into rain.
A loud roar came from the employees—cheers, screams, chants.
It was over. They had won this game.
Diane barely had time to register it before she felt the first raindrop land on her skin.
Then another.
And another. Within seconds, the sky opened up, and rain poured down on them, soaking the field.
But no one cared.
They had done it.
They had won.
Diane let out a breathless laugh, her heart raced like a squirrel after a long run into the tree.
She turned to Gabriel just as he raised his arms in victory, his soaked jersey was clinging to him as he grinned.
She didn’t think. She just ran.
Her legs carried her straight to him, her cleats kicking up wet grass as she pushed forward.
Gabriel barely had time to react before Diane crashed into him, wrapping her arms around his neck in a tight hug.
"We did it!" she shouted over the pouring rain.
He laughed, arms wrapping around her waist, lifting her slightly off the ground.
"Yeah, we did."
For a moment, nothing else existed.
Just them, standing in the middle of the field, rain pouring down, hearts pounding.
Diane could feel his breath against her neck, the way his fingers pressed into her back, grounding her.
Her heart was beating so fast, but she wasn’t sure if it was from the game or from the way Gabriel was holding her.
Then—
A voice cut through them.
"Gabriel."
Diane pulled back slightly, turning just in time to see Evelyn step toward them.
Her soaked hair clung to her face, and her jersey was just as drenched as theirs, but she didn’t seem to care.
She was locked onto Gabriel, unbelievable.
And then, without hesitation—
She leaned in and kissed him.
Right there.
Right in front of Diane.
Gabriel froze, caught off guard, but he didn’t pull away.
Diane stood there, her heart still hammered in her chest, watching as everything around her seemed to slow down.
The cheers, the rain, the stadium—it all faded.
All she could focus on was them.
Her hands slowly dropped from Gabriel’s shoulders, and she took a small step back, suddenly feeling cold despite the heat of the moment.
Evelyn pulled away.
Diane clenched her jaw.
Well.
That just happened.
Diane blinked, struggling to catch up with what just happened.
Evelyn had kissed Gabriel.
Right in front of her.
The adrenaline from the game, the rain, the rush of victory—it all twisted into something sharp and hot in Diane’s chest.
Her hands curled into fists, her pulse roared in her ears.
Before she could even think, she moved.
SMACK!
The sound of her palm colliding with Evelyn’s cheek cut through the rain-soaked air.
Evelyn stumbled slightly, her eyes widening in shock.
"Yo-you!" She stuttered.
But Diane wasn’t done.
SMACK!
Another slap, this time harder. Evelyn gasped, her head snapped to the side.
"What the hell, Diane?!" Evelyn shouted, holding her cheek.
Diane’s breath was ragged, her body trembled with anger. "What the hell is wrong with you?! You don’t just—"
SMACK!
A third slap landed before Evelyn could say another word.
Gabriel finally stepped in, grabbing Diane’s wrists before she could strike again.
"Diane, stop!" he said, his grip was so strong but careful.
She struggled against him, her chest heaved up and down like an angry bear’s.
"Let me go, Gabriel!"
"No," he said, his voice lowered this time but with more energy. "You need to calm down."
Diane’s eyes burned as she glared at Evelyn, who was still holding her stinging cheek, looking somewhere between shocked and furious.
The rain continued to pour, mixing with the heat of the moment.
No one said a word.
The celebration was over.
