Chapter 51:The Edge of Fear
"Where are we going?"
Gabriel smirked, "you will see."
He covered her eyes with a red blindfold and let her into an elevator.
The doors slid open after what Diane thought were about the fifth floor.
Gabriel removed the blindfold, and Diane’s breath hitched in her throat as she stepped out, her eyes immediately locking onto the door at the end of the corridor.
Even after all this time, she could never forget it.
This was the place where she had died.
Gabriel walked ahead, but still glancing at her, calculating, as if gauging her reaction.
"I did some digging," he said casually, his deep voice destroyed the silence.
"Turns out Adrian just bought this building from my company without knowing it was mine."
Diane’s fists clenched at her sides.
Knowing that Adrian had reclaimed this apartment—this prison—sent a fresh nausea through her.
"And?" she asked, keeping her voice calm despite the lighting and thunder raging inside her.
Gabriel leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. "That’s where he meets Evelyn."
Diane’s stomach twisted.
Evelyn.
The woman Adrian had replaced her with in the past.
The woman who lived while she had once died.
She swallowed hard, refusing to let the past crush her.
Not here again.
Gabriel pushed off the wall and stepped closer.
"There’s something I want to show you," he murmured. "Come with me."
She hesitated for only a second before nodding.
But then, before they got to leave the apartment, the door unlocked and they heard someone talking.
"I will kill him with my own hands if he refuses."
Diane looked at Gabriel, "Adrian?" She asked in a hush voice.
Gabriel turned back, placing his finger on his lips, "ssshhh."
He then looked around to find an escape, he saw a window to the balcony outside.
"He will agree, your father pretends to be weak, but we both know how strong he actually is," Diane replied to Adrian’s comment.
Diane’s heart raced like a mad lion.
The weird energy in the room thickened like fog.
She could still hear Adrian’s voice, sounding like it was full of anger and disrespect.
"We can’t let them see us," Gabriel whispered urgently to Diane.
She nodded, biting her lower lip.
With a quick look towards the door, Gabriel made his decision.
He darted to the window, pushing it open quietly.
The cool breeze rushed in, sending a chill through him.
He climbed onto the ledge, his palms sweaty against the cold metal.
Below him, the concrete seemed far away, but there was no time to hesitate.
"Come on!" he urged, glancing back at Diane.
"I swear, they’re all going to pay," they seemed to be getting closer.
Diane was right behind him, her breath shallow.
Together, they stepped out onto the narrow balcony.
"Ga-Gabriel."
"Breathe."
It creaked under their weight, and Diane kept holding her breath, hoping it wouldn’t give a way.
The next apartment below them was abandoned, its balcony looked empty.
Gabriel could see a gap between the two balconies, just good enough to jump.
The keys were placed inside, and Adrian was already unlocking the apartment.
Diane’s eyes shifted between Gabriel and the door.
Her blood was rushing through her veins faster, sweat covered her whole body.
*chin* *chin* *chin*
"Why isn’t it opening," Evelyn asked.
"Let me push it harder like how I’m going to be pushing you in a minute."
*Thumb*
This was just another exercise for Gabriel, he jumped down and landed safely.
"Come on, Diane, come. You don’t want him to see you, do you?" Gabriel rushed her from below.
*Thumb* another slam to the door, and Diane couldn’t tell if it was her heart or Adrian.
"On three," Diane whispered. "One... two... three!"
*duuuuush!" The door opened and Diane forced her body to fly down.
Gabriel spread his hands, and caught her before she could fall, they both fell down with a thud.
The balcony rattled, but it held them.
"Who the fuck left the window open?" Adrian shouted and they both heard.
Adrian rushed to the balcony to see if anyone was there, but Gabriel pulled Diane closer to him, and covered her mouth with his hand.
"Ssshh," he ordered her not to make a single sound.
"Maybe you’re just being paranoid? Anyway, Adrian, what are we going to do about Diane? Gabriel doesn’t let me get close to him anymore."
"I need to kill her, of course."
Diane’s eyes widened at the thought, and Gabriel placed his other hand on her chest to see how fast was her heart beating.
The doors to the apartment were locked, Gabriel and Diane couldn’t get inside.
"How are you going to kill her? Her father and Gabriel will hunt you down."
"I will buy a gun," Diane could imagine him smiling.
She looked at the city stretched in front of them, an ocean of lights.
Diane noticed Gabriel’s hands moving down, she stopped in her tracks. "Gabriel—"
He didn’t let her finish.
He reached for her wrist and pulled her even more forward.
They both could hear Evelyn and Adrian from above, but that didn’t stop Gabriel.
He pushed them closer to the edge of the balcony, the sheer drop made her dizzy.
Her breath came out uneven.
Gabriel looked down to her, then he suddenly gripped her waist and lifted her slightly—just enough that her feet left the ground.
The sensation was instant, electric.
She gasped, her fingers duh into his shoulders. "Gabriel—!"
His lips crashed into hers.
It wasn’t a soft kiss.
It was reckless, consuming, like fire meeting gasoline.
The danger, the fear, the exhilaration—it blurred into something intoxicating.
Then, just as quickly, he pulled her back, steadying her on solid ground.
Diane’s head spun. "You—"
Gabriel smirked, his thumb went over her lower lip.
"You should trust me more."
Her heart thundered against her ribs.
She wasn’t sure if it was from fear of falling down by herself or both of them.
Gabriel removed her coat, while Adrian and Evelyn were continuing their plan of killing Diane.
"What are you doing?" She asked silently.
"You. I’m going to do you," Gabriel hushed back, removing his pants.
