Chapter 47: A Mother’s Poison

It didn’t take long for Monday morning to come.

Diane was next to Leon, her arms crossed as they watched Arthur walk into the grand entrance of Rosewood Academy, one of the most elite private schools in the country.

The tall and massive gates, the well-manicured lawns, and the luxurious buildings gave the sign of safety.

But Diane knew better.

Even with the security they had stationed around him, Rachel was still out there—watching, and probably waiting.

Leon exhaled beside her. "You don’t have to stay here all day, Diane. The security team will handle everything."

Diane barely looked at him. "I don’t trust them."

Leon smirked. "You don’t trust anyone."

She turned to him, lowering her eyebrows and slowly moving her lips. "Can you blame me?"

Leon sighed. "No. But Arthur is a child. If we suffocate him, he’ll resent us."

Diane knew he was right.

That was why she had made this decision in the first place—to give Arthur something normal.

But deep down, she felt uneasy.

She watched as Arthur hesitated near the doors, looking back at her.

She gave him a small smile, a nod of encouragement.

After a moment, he turned and stepped inside, disappearing into the halls of the academy.

Diane’s fingers twitched at her sides.

She wanted to follow.

But she couldn’t.

Not yet.

Instead, she turned to Leon. "Keep an eye on him."

Leon’s facial muscles softened slightly. "I will."

Diane took one last look at the school before stepping into the car.

She never should have left him alone.

Arthur sat quietly at the lunch table, his small hands curled around his juice box.

The other children chattered and laughed around him, but he stayed quiet, observing, thinking.

And then—

A soft voice called his name.

"Arthur."

He froze immediately.

That voice...

Slowly, he turned.

Standing just a few feet away, dressed in a simple but elegant beige coat, was his mother.

Rachel.

Arthur’s eyes widened, his grip tightened on his juice box.

’MM-Mom?’ He whispered.

Rachel smiled—a soft, sad smile to please her son.

"Oh, my sweet boy." She stepped closer, lowering herself to his level. "I’ve missed you so much."

Arthur’s heart pounded. ’H-How did you—?’

Rachel shushed him gently, reaching out to touch his cheek.

"Hhhmmhm..." Arthur mumbled.

"Shhh. I just had to see you. I had to make sure you were okay."

Arthur glanced around nervously.

He wasn’t supposed to talk to her.

Leon and Diane had said she was bad. That she couldn’t be trusted.

But...

She was his mom.

And she looked so sad.

Rachel stroked his hair, her voice trembled just enough to convince her son.

"Arthur, do you know what they’ve done to me?"

Arthur shook his head slowly.

Rachel exhaled shakily. "They took me away from you. Your father and Diane—they made me leave."

Arthur frowned, his tiny hands clenched into fists, moving his head to the right side to make it ask, "why?"

Rachel’s eyes glistened with unshed tears.

"Because they hate me, Arthur. Because they don’t want us to be together."

Arthur’s chest ached.

Rachel took his small hands in hers. "I don’t want you to be afraid of them, baby. But you need to be careful."

Arthur’s lips parted, confused. ’Careful?’

The boy lifted his left eyebrow as if he was again asking a question.

Rachel nodded, squeezing his hands gently. "Do you remember the accident?"

Arthur’s body stiffened.

A small muscle in his right cheek moved as if something dark flashed through his memory.

The sound of screeching tires.

The smell of burning metal.

The feeling of coldness swallowing him whole.

But—

The details were blurred.

He couldn’t remember.

Rachel tilted her head, watching him carefully. "Do you remember, baby?"

Arthur swallowed hard. Then, hesitantly, he shook his head.

Rachel let out a soft sigh.

"It’s okay," she whispered. "You’re still young. But one day... one day, you’ll remember everything."

Arthur bit his lip, his heart pounded so heavy, he thought it might pop out of his chest.

Rachel reached into her coat pocket, pulling out a small locket.

"Here," she murmured, pressing it into his palm. "So you don’t forget how much I love you."

Arthur looked down at the small silver locket, running his fingers over it.

Rachel leaned in, her voice was so soft, fragile. "I love you so much, Arthur. And I’ll always be waiting for you."

Arthur’s throat tightened.

"Mom..." he forced a mumble out from his lips.

Be arched an eyebrow, ’so you bastard can speak.’

Rachel cupped his cheek. "Be good, baby...help mommy hurt them, okay?"

Then, before he could say anything else, she turned and walked away.

Arthur sat there, gripping the locket tightly.

His tiny chest ached.

And for the first time...

He wasn’t sure who he was supposed to believe.

Rachel wasn’t the kindest mother, even the maids were more gentle to him.

But his father loved him so much, and the sudden sister, her bodyguard. They all seemed to love him so much.

"Hey, Arthur, you haven’t come to school lately, teachers said you can’t speak now," a young boy with short blond hair called for him.

Arthur turned around, seeing James, the boy whom he didn’t like.

"Say something, speak!" James pushed Arthur.

But Arthur didn’t respond.

"How are you Hoffman’s son if you don’t know how to stand up for yourself?" James pushed his shoulder one more time.

Arthur tried to turn and walk away, but James grabbed him by his sleeve and dragged him closer.

Arthur lost his balance and fell to the ground.

"Hahahahaha! What a loser!" James and his friends laughed and mocked him.

But to Arthur, this was his normal day.

Even if he was the richest kid, there were people who didn’t care about status and respect.

They would bully him, push him around, make him do chores for them.

And they all were just seven...

The big company owners would bully their own children, and force the mentality of this on them, where they would bring them to school and carry on the process.

"Let’s get him!" James and others jumped on Arthur.
