Chapter 102: Interrupted Fire
The space between them disappeared in an instant.
Diane had kissed Gabriel before, but never like this.
Never without restraint. Never without the pressure from the world pressing between them, forcing them apart before they could truly give in.
Tonight, there was no hesitation. No second-guessing.
Just the two of them.
Gabriel’s grip on the back of her neck tightened, not possessive, but still strong enough—like he wasn’t willing to let her go just yet.
His lips moved against hers with a slow hunger, and Diane felt herself leaning into it, losing herself in the warmth of his touch.
She wasn’t sure who deepened the kiss first.
Maybe it was her. Maybe it was him. Maybe it was inevitable.
His hand slid to her waist, fingers pressed into the fabric of her blouse as if debating whether to pull her closer.
Diane broke away first, just enough to catch her breath, but Gabriel didn’t let her get far.
His forehead rested against hers, his breath warm against her lips.
"I should stop," he murmured, voice sounded husky.
Diane smirked. "Then why haven’t you?"
A low chuckle rumbled in his chest. "You really do love tempting fate, don’t you?"
She reached up, tracing her fingers along his jaw, feeling the roughness of his five o’clock shadow.
"Maybe I just like tempting you."
Gabriel exhaled longly and quite dramatically, his grip tightened for a second before he forced himself to lean back.
His eyes were dark, intense, full of something that made Diane’s stomach flip.
"You know what happens if we do this," he said quietly.
Diane tilted her head. "Enlighten me."
Gabriel smirked, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. "We don’t go back."
She held his eyes, unflinching. "Good."
Something shifted then. The careful restraint he always kept around her—gone.
Gabriel moved quickly, his hand slid to the small of her back as he pulled her flush against him.
Their lips met again, but this time there was no slowness, no patience.
This was a man who had been waiting too long.
Diane barely registered when he lifted her onto the counter, her legs instinctively wrapped around his waist.
His hands settled on her hips, fingers pressed into her as if trying to memorise every inch of her.
Her own hands moved up, sliding beneath the open collar of his shirt, feeling the heat of his skin.
Gabriel groaned against her lips. "You’re making it impossible to walk away, Diane."
She smiled against his mouth. "Then don’t."
His response was immediate.
His lips found her neck, trailing slow, heated kisses along her skin.
Diane’s breath hitched, her fingers tangled in his hair as she tilted her head back slightly.
Gabriel’s voice was a low murmur against her skin. "You’re playing a dangerous game."
Diane’s heart pounded, but she refused to let him have all the control.
She pulled him back up, their lips meeting again, deeper this time.
"You started it," she whispered.
Gabriel chuckled, his fingers pressing into her waist. "And I intend to finish it."
Diane shivered, anticipation coiling in her stomach.
Then—
A sharp knock at the door.
They both froze.
Gabriel exhaled heavily, pressing his forehead against hers. "Of course."
Diane let out a breathless laugh, still slightly dazed.
"You should really invest in a ’do not disturb’ sign."
Another knock, louder this time.
Gabriel muttered something under his breath before finally stepping back, running a hand through his hair.
Diane smirked at the frustration in his expression. "You look annoyed."
Gabriel shot her a flat look. "I am annoyed."
The knocking continued, followed by Riot’s voice.
"Hey, lovebirds! Open up before I start making assumptions."
Diane rolled her eyes. "He’s impossible."
Gabriel sighed, adjusting his shirt. "And yet, why do we still keep him around."
Diane slid off the counter, smoothing down her blouse before heading toward the door.
She shot Gabriel a teasing glance over her shoulder. "We’ll finish this later."
Gabriel smirked. "Count on it."
She opened the door, and Riot was standing there, looking far too smug.
"Well, well," he drawled, glancing between them. "Did I interrupt something?"
Diane crossed her arms. "What do you want, Riot?"
Riot leaned against the doorframe. "First of all, rude. Second, we might have a problem."
Gabriel frowned. "What kind of problem?"
Riot’s smirk faded slightly. "Someone’s asking questions about Rachel. And not the kind we want."
Diane’s stomach tightened. "Who?"
Riot exhaled. "A journalist. Digging into the case. And they’re looking for you."
Gabriel’s jaw clenched. "What do they know?"
Riot shrugged.
"Not much. Yet." He gave Diane a look. "But if they keep poking, they might start connecting dots we don’t want them to."
Diane inhaled slowly, her mind was racing way too fact. "Do we know who sent them?"
Riot shook his head. "Not yet. But I’ll find out."
Gabriel’s voice was cold. "Make sure they stop asking."
Riot arched a brow. "That an order?"
Gabriel met his eyes slowly. "It’s a warning."
Diane sighed, rubbing her temples. "This is the last thing we need right now."
Riot shrugged. "Welcome to your life, sweetheart."
Diane gave him a glare, but there was no real heat behind it.
Gabriel’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and exhaled dramatically one more time. "It’s Leon."
Diane’s stomach twisted. "Father? What does he want?"
Gabriel answered the call, his voice was measured well. "What is it?"
Leon’s voice came through the speaker, low and grave.
"We have another problem."
Diane and Riot exchanged a glance.
Gabriel’s grip on the phone tightened. "Define ’problem.’"
Leon hesitated.
Then—
"There’s been a break-in."
Diane’s heart stopped. "Where?"
Leon’s voice was clipped.
"At the hospital."
Silence.
Gabriel’s entire body tensed.
Then Leon’s next words made Diane’s blood run cold.
"They weren’t looking for records, Diane. They were looking for him."
Diane inhaled sharply. "Arthur?"
Leon’s voice was grim.
"They probably know where he is...at your house..."
"Damn it! Why can’t we catch a break?" Gabriel whispered.
"Father, for his own safety, we need to get Arthur out of the country, where no one could find him for a while until we sort this mess."
"Where do you suggest?"
"Europe."
