Chapter 643: 457 Can I hug your daughter? (Second update)
"Actually, I no longer care about whether we have a wedding or not. We had a ceremony back home, and as for weddings, you don’t owe me one. Ye Cheng, if one day my temperament changes drastically, I just want you to remember one thing, and please love her just as you love me now. Is that okay?"
"What are you talking about? I don’t quite understand," Ye Cheng said, genuinely confused by her words.
"Do you still remember what I once asked you?"
"What?"
"Can people come back to life after dying?"
Ye Cheng frowned deeply, trying to grasp what his wife was getting at.
"I don’t believe it either—if a person can be reborn in another’s body after dying. But some things seem so coincidental that even scientists might not be able to explain them."
"My dear, don’t think too much. If one day you’re gone, I won’t allow anyone else to take over your body. You are you, and no one else can replace you," Ye Cheng suddenly understood what Xiaofeng meant.
Was this foolish woman worried that one day, if she were no longer here, another woman might take over her body and be with him?
"How could you stop that from happening if there really is such a day? I just hope you could accept her."
"No, I can’t accept that," Ye Cheng shook his head, "Are you having a nightmare where someone else has taken over your body? With me here, you don’t have to be afraid; no one can take over your body. Okay, I’m right here with you. It’s just a nightmare, don’t think too much. It’s just a nightmare, not real. Such things won’t happen in reality," Ye Cheng held Xiaofeng tightly, giving her a greater sense of security.
This is just a dream. How could such a thing happen in reality? He had heard many bizarre stories from childhood but had hardly ever witnessed any.
"Yes, I had a very long yet very real dream; in the end, I was afraid I would find myself taking over someone else’s body. That’s why I’m scared of leaving you and our treasures." According to Xiaoqi, the spiritual energy in the space was thinning, which meant that the original owner might return at any moment.
So she had to be ready to leave them at any time.
When that day actually came, she suspected there would be no time even for goodbyes before she vanished into thin air.
"This can’t be true. It’s just a dream," Ye Cheng comforted her, holding her close, "So, don’t make me sleep on the floor next time. I didn’t sleep beside you for one night, and you had all these terrible dreams. Don’t scare me like that. Go to sleep, I’m right here."
"I hope it’s just a dream," Xiaofeng closed her eyes, lying peacefully in his arms.
She knew that this was not a dream; what was happening was very real.
The original owner was coming back, and she could do nothing to stop it. The body was originally hers, and as the newcomer, she had no right to prevent her return.
All she could do now was cherish the time she had left and prepare herself to leave at any moment.
When she woke up, Ye Cheng had already left. Just as she stretched lazily, the boy and girl twins came over.
"Mom, you woke up so late today." Xiaobao took off his shoes and climbed onto the bed. "Great-grandpa said he’d take us out for breakfast soon. Do you want to come with us?"
"Sure, where are you guys going? I’ll come too."
"Just follow Great-grandpa."
When they came out, Old Gu was waiting in the courtyard, smiling and standing up when he saw the trio emerge.
The breakfast spot was a bit out of the way. It was a soy milk shop that was said to serve very tasty fried dough sticks and soy milk, and therefore, it always did good business.
As they arrived, the place was indeed crowded, but the environment inside was clean and orderly, which made dining there comfortable.
The boy and girl twins each ordered a bowl of soy milk and a fried dough stick, eating with relish.
"This area used to be a chemical factory site, but that has been over a decade ago; this place has long lost its former look, retaining only its present vibrancy and bustle."
Xiaofeng nodded. "Times are changing, and many things no longer look like they did back then."
"You’re right," Old Gu ate his fried dough sticks with soy milk, a combination many people enjoyed.
"Grandpa, actually, I think if we want to investigate this matter, we should start with those unreachable relatives, like who sent them to the orphanage and who took them out, and after being taken out, who taught them. I believe there must be a thread linking them together. Otherwise, why would they change their records? Just to make it impossible for you to find them?"
All the damned died in the explosion, who else might someone not want to be found?
"Perhaps, among those with whom we’ve lost contact, there’s someone who harbors a secret. Someone doesn’t want us to find him, so they changed the data, causing us to lose contact with the bearer of that secret completely." Xiaofeng’s remark made Gu think of a possibility.
"Then, Grandpa, do you think it’s likely?"
Something occurred to Gu, and his expression suddenly became animated, "Xiaofeng, your approach to the problem has reminded me, yes, we’ve been going in the wrong direction from the start. Someone has been intentionally leading us astray. Their real purpose is to prevent us from finding that secret bearer."
This secret, what it entails, no one knows.
After the reminder, Gu hurriedly ate breakfast and asked Xiaofeng to take Erbao back home as he needed to step out.
Xiaofeng, seeing that Erbao had finished eating, took their hands and strolled nearby.
A few guards followed not too far behind.
The mother and daughters, like three cheerful birds, were light and joyous.
Not far off, Men Chao watched the mother and two daughters, staring blankly.
It was there that his parents had lost their lives years ago. He came here almost every few days to think about them.
If his mother hadn’t died, he might have had a brother or a sister to accompany him as his mother would take them out, filled with laughter and joy.
But that was never to be.
He only remembered his mother’s last words, the day she last went to work, hugging him before leaving: "Nannan, if one day Mom and Dad are no longer here, you must live on strongly. Remember, Mom and Dad will always love you most."
When his mother said this, she also gave him a hairpin, one of her favorite accessories.
He had not been able to understand her words at the time; he was so young, how could he comprehend his mother’s words.
He took out the hairpin his mother had left him from his breast pocket. His mother had sensed the danger early, which explains why she said those strange words.
But if his mother had sensed the danger, why did she still go to work? Why?
No, it was just a premonition, and unfortunately, something really did happen.
Maybe the experiment itself was flawed, and she feared something wrong might happen, and then it indeed did.
He stared at the hairpin as if his mother stood before him.
Gu Xiaobao, because of running too fast, fell down, seemingly not lightly.
He looked distressed and walked over to them.
"Mom, it hurts." Gu Xiaobao, tears in his eyes, focused on his swollen and scraped joint.
"It’s okay, falling down can make you grow taller," Xiaofeng comforted her daughter, using the words her own mother used to say.
Gu Dabao, hearing how his mother comforted his sister, twitched the corner of his mouth.
"Really? Falling down really makes you grow taller?" Gu Xiaobao perked up upon hearing this, her eyes lighting up.
"Falling down makes you tougher, so you’ll grow up healthier," Men Chao, unable to stop himself, joined in.
Xiaofeng, seeing Men Chao suddenly appear, smiled lightly, "Uncle Men is right, get up, don’t run so fast next time."
Picking up Xiaobao, she asked the other, "Is the Family Head of the Men family here on business nearby?"
Men Chao did not answer Xiaofeng’s question but instead fixed his eyes on Xiaobao and asked softly, "May I hold your daughter?"
