Chapter 1012: Chapter 1008: Oolong
"What useful information have you found?!"
Hearing the bespectacled man’s words, the leader of the task force immediately stood up, staring at the bespectacled man with eyes filled with tension and excitement.
The bespectacled man placed a printed screenshot on the table and pointed to some gibberish on it, "These traces have been recompiled using a new algorithm, and ultimately, this gibberish points to an IP address."
"What address?"
The bespectacled man instinctively swallowed and looked up, articulating clearly, "Watanabe Consortium Headquarters."
"What did you say?!" Someone sitting on the other side suddenly stood up, knocking over the teacup in front of them without a care, staring stiffly at the bespectacled man, eyes reddening and teeth gritting with an irrepressible rage in their eyes, like an enraged lion.
The most affected by this result was Tanaka Heiichi, as it was he who had taken Watanabe Yasu and Hattori Keiko into the National Museum Warehouse yesterday. Now the bespectacled man was telling him that last night, the one who hacked into the National Museum’s security monitoring system was likely someone from within the Watanabe Consortium. How could he not be agitated or think too much?
He had just left with Watanabe Yasu and Hattori Keiko a few hours prior, and then someone entered the National Museum Warehouse and stole so many important items. What’s more, the hacker of the museum’s monitoring system was a person from the Watanabe Consortium.
If someone now told him that Watanabe Yasu had nothing to do with the museum robbery, he wouldn’t believe a single word.
Tanaka Heiichi felt entirely at a loss. In his subconscious, he had already determined that Watanabe Yasu was the mastermind behind this museum theft, the real culprit!
The task force members, being outsiders, were not so easily convinced of this matter. They exchanged glances, surprised by the news and simultaneously suspicious.
Being able to infiltrate the museum’s security system indicates a skilled individual, so how could such a loophole be left for the police to catch them by? It defies logic.
However, suspicions aside, since the evidence pointed to the Watanabe Consortium, they still needed to investigate. Watanabe Yasu needed to cooperate with the police investigation to clear his own name.
Thus, when Watanabe Yasu firmly believed that this matter had nothing to do with him, he was taken away by the police under the guise of assisting with the investigation, quickly followed by a series of undeniable pieces of evidence against him.
A suddenly appeared encrypted file on his computer contained a roster and detailed information of the artifacts lost from the National Antique Museum, and the file password was, surprisingly, his birthday.
That’s not all; unbeknownst to Watanabe Yasu, a strand of hair was taken from him by the criminal investigation department. Comparing it to a hair obtained from the museum warehouse, the DNA data completely matched, proving that both strands belonged to the same person.
Watanabe Yasu was dumbfounded, entirely at a loss as to what was happening. His mind was filled with chaos, wanting to ask, "Who the hell did I offend? How did a perfectly good Christmas turn into such a disaster? This Christmas gift was certainly one for the books!"
The hapless Watanabe Yasu was arrested by the police. All the evidence pointed to him as a participant in the museum theft, leaving him unable to explain himself.
He truly did not know what to say, as he couldn’t provide an alibi. The previous night, he had spent at a mistress’s house. However, when the police followed up on Watanabe Yasu’s statement and looked for the mistress, it seemed she had caught some wind and fled long ago.
Watanabe Yasu was stunned; without a witness now, the house was his property. Located in the countryside, its remoteness made finding eyewitnesses difficult.
The police became more convinced that Watanabe Yasu was fabricating evidence for himself, resorting to intimidation and threats and even bringing in a psychologist for a psychological game of chess with him.
After a day and night of torment, Watanabe Yasu felt that he couldn’t hold on any longer and was about to confess. But unexpectedly, a twist of fate occurred, and the runaway mistress returned, perhaps from a pang of conscience, to testify on his behalf, proving that he had been in the countryside with her the entire night.
To support her testimony, the woman presented her phone to the police, showing photos she took the previous night. The photos showed them in bed, kissing, partially unclothed, though a bit indecent, but clearly depicting Watanabe Yasu.
With compelling evidence, this false accusation case finally reached a conclusion. Watanabe Yasu had a valid alibi, clearing his name. Those task force members who had tirelessly worked thinking they had captured the real culprit were dumbfounded.
"This is impossible. That hair indeed belonged to Watanabe Yasu, and the IP address I tracked also indeed points to the Watanabe Consortium address. If it wasn’t Watanabe Yasu, how do you explain this evidence? I suspect that woman is fabricating evidence for Watanabe Yasu!"
Learning that Watanabe Yasu had been exonerated, the bespectacled man at the Police Department widened his eyes in disbelief that he was wrong again, marking yet another instance in recent months when his investigations had led him astray.
The leader of the Police Department task force patted the bespectacled man on the shoulder, laughing, "Nohara, the criminal investigation isn’t as simple as you think. If every case were solved based on intuition, wouldn’t the world be in chaos? Your sharp intuition is indeed your innate talent, but overly relying on it may not be beneficial, as it could result in one consequence — you being led by the nose by a cunning suspect, following only his directed path, and losing the true judgment."
Nohara Sa’s face reddened with embarrassment, yet he still refused to believe that the clues he diligently gathered were useless. Stuck in a dead end, he appeared to heed the leader’s words but was inwardly unconvinced, confident that he could, with his abilities, uncover traces of the thieves.
Watanabe Yasu narrowly escaped this ordeal and was released without charges. It was an unfounded disaster, yet it left Watanabe Yasu deeply shaken. Leaving the Police Department, his mind was consumed with questions about what had happened and who was orchestrating this against him!
