Chapter 993: Chapter 993: Bertha, I’m sorry, save me...

When Bertha Swift received a call from Maria White, the effects of the drug had just started to kick in. She was groggy and initially thought she was dreaming upon hearing the tearful voice on the other end, until Oswald Lewis’s voice cut in.

It was like a bucket of cold water was dumped on her, instantly sobering Bertha Swift.

She sat up abruptly from the bed and finally heard Maria White’s voice clearly, "Bertha, I’m sorry, help me..."

Her body, which had been warm from sleep, turned cold instantly. She barely found her voice to ask, "Maria White, where are you?"

As soon as she finished her question, there was a noise on the other end. When it quieted down, Bertha Swift realized the phone had changed hands, and she held her breath as she called out, "Oswald."

A snicker came from the other side, "Miss Swift, your friend is a guest at my place. Would you be interested in joining us?"

"If I go, will you let my friend go?" Bertha Swift propped herself up as she asked one word at a time. She hadn’t known Maria White for long and there wasn’t much of a deep friendship, but if something happened to the other because of her, she really feared she’d feel guilty for a lifetime.

"You’ll know once you come," Oswald Lewis laughed, his voice sounding like a snake lurking in the damp darkness, spitting its tongue at distant prey.

Bertha Swift felt goosebumps rise all over her body, but she forced herself to stay calm. Meeting Oswald Lewis with her current identity could mean she might not save Maria White and could even get herself trapped, so she had to come up with an idea.

Covering the phone, Bertha Swift took a deep breath, "Is Oswald looking to get involved with the Piers family?"

Oswald Lewis originally thought the woman on the other end would be scared out of her wits, but to his surprise, she calmed down in just a breath, even mentioning the Piers family, which took him aback, "You’re smart to mention the Piers. It seems you did your homework before coming back yesterday..."

At that, Oswald’s tone shifted and suddenly turned cold, "Now that you know about the Piers, you should know what you’ve missed out on."

"What I’ve missed isn’t important, what’s important is what Oswald missed, right?" The fickle man on the other side was like an impending threat to Bertha Swift, yet she knew the more it seemed that way, the more she needed to stay composed.

"Haha, can you afford what I’ve missed?" At this, Oswald was filled with anger.

"How will Oswald know I can’t afford it unless you say?" Bertha Swift said this without a shred of confidence, yet her tone rose as if discussing something utterly mundane.

Oswald Lewis laughed!

He was quite curious about what Adam Piers might have done in front of this woman yesterday that gave her such confidence, or perhaps she hadn’t seen today’s news about Adam and that young starlet’s date and thought all the rich young men were romantics?

Bertha Swift endured the discomfort and listened to the other laugh, "How do you know I won’t work unless you try, Oswald?"

"Hahaha, I didn’t know Miss Swift was this interesting, alright, come to the usual place and we’ll talk in detail." Oswald laughed out loud, quite curious whether the woman on the other side of the call was truly confident or just putting on a brave face.

"Oswald hasn’t promised my request yet," Bertha Swift said calmly.

"Alright, as long as Miss Swift can afford it, I’ll make sure your friend is safe and sound. Shall I send someone to pick you up now?" Oswald said with mockery and disdain.

Maria White was pressed to the ground, hearing the general gist of their conversation, feeling somewhat hopeless. She didn’t know what Bertha Swift could do, but seeing Oswald’s demeanor, if it was just Bertha coming, both of them might not escape a beating. She wanted to say something but could only lower her head, curling up against the two intimidating bodyguards beside her.

Bertha Swift reported an address, then got up to wash up.

She changed her clothes and hesitated for a long time before opening Facebook to find Adam Piers, pursed her lips, "Thanks for the clothes last night, I’m at the ’Nightshade’ bar, can’t return them conveniently, could you send someone to pick them up?"

After sending the message, Bertha Swift held her breath, fearing the dreaded red exclamation mark that would show she had been deleted.

Fortunately, after a few seconds, the message was sent successfully.

Bertha Swift let out a deep sigh of relief, but immediately grew tense again, fearing Adam would directly refuse, yet after waiting a long time, there was no reply at all.

This left Bertha Swift uncertain if Adam had seen it or not, or if he had seen it but deliberately ignored her.

Clutching her phone, Bertha Swift’s heart was on edge. Even when Oswald’s men came for her, there was no activity from Adam Piers in her Facebook chat.

As she got into the car with Oswald’s men, Bertha Swift unwillingly glanced again, but still no reply.

Filled with anxiety the whole way, until she got out of the car, Bertha Swift’s phone had only spam messages, still no word from Adam. Glancing at the glaring neon lights of the bar, she gritted her teeth and sent Adam her location.

After doing all that, she wanted to wait for a reply, but the car door had already opened, and Oswald’s men outside urged impatiently, "Why are you just sitting there? Get out of the car!"

After yelling, they stared at Bertha Swift, momentarily stunned, then understood why they had no reaction when she left last night. Without makeup, the woman was several degrees more beautiful, and her entire aura completely different from when she was decked out in flashy dance clothes being pushed into the hospital. No wonder they hadn’t recognized her.

It would have been nothing short of a miracle if they had!

However, stunned by Bertha Swift’s striking beauty, their attitude towards her softened slightly, leading her through the back door of the bar and into the upstairs private room where Oswald was waiting.

Before the private room door opened, Bertha Swift still wanted to check her phone, but she had no chance to act before the door opened, forcing her to tuck her phone away.

Oswald Lewis was also stunned for a moment when he saw the person at the door, completely unprepared for the woman’s extraordinary elegance without her makeup. He silently marveled at Adam Piers’s keen eye for picking out this woman through such thick makeup.

He hadn’t seen the starlet Adam Piers dated, but he could guess that the woman before him would not be any less charming.

With a reckless sigh, Oswald applauded Bertha Swift, "Miss Swift, you’re truly surprising, no wonder you’re so confident."

Bertha Swift feigned calmness while taking a deep breath and steeled herself at the sight of Maria White on the ground, asking straightforwardly, "Then could Oswald please send my friend back?"

"Ha." Oswald seemed to hear a joke, "Miss Swift, you’re a bit overconfident, aren’t you? You probably haven’t seen today’s news about Adam Piers, have you?"

"How could I not? News about Master Adam is so hot, how could I have missed it?" Bertha Swift responded with a smile.

The bar’s dim lights were a bit dark, otherwise Oswald Lewis would have surely noticed how stiff Bertha Swift’s smile was.

Her words not only surprised Oswald Lewis but also shocked Maria White on the floor. Before Oswald could speak, Maria exclaimed, "Adam... Adam Piers? Is it the Adam Piers we know?"

Bertha Swift frowned and nodded at Maria White.

Maria opened her mouth, "Oswald asked you last night to accompany Adam Piers, then why didn’t you agree? You like him so much!"

Bertha’s frown deepened as she glanced at Maria White.

Realizing this wasn’t the right time and place, Maria immediately shut her mouth, but she was still puzzled. Since Oswald wanted Bertha to accompany Adam Piers, why didn’t she just go with it? Master Adam is so handsome; sleeping with him wouldn’t be a loss!

But at that moment, Maria suddenly realized another issue: did Adam Piers have feelings for Bertha?

Oswald also didn’t expect the woman in front of him to already know Adam, and even like him? This puzzled him just like Maria. Since she likes him, she could earn money and sleep with the man she likes, so why escape? It spoiled his plans!

"Oswald, could you first release my friend?" Bertha ignored Maria’s words, striving to overlook Oswald’s snake-like gaze upon her, and continued to express her stance.

"That depends on Miss Swift’s sincerity." Oswald said, fixing his unfettered gaze on Bertha.

Bertha took a deep breath, "The day after tomorrow, the Piers family has a small banquet to celebrate Elder Piers’ birthday. I can ask Adam to send you an invitation, how about that?"

Oswald was first stunned by Bertha’s words, then burst into laughter, looking at her as if she were a joke. Elder Piers’ birthday banquet? Is this woman playing tricks on him? Everyone knows Elder Piers is reserved and only moved back to Swallow City from Gills City last year.

Even so, he usually resides in Moon Lake Manor, rarely stepping outside, let alone for birthdays. Such events are intimate family gatherings for close friends and relatives. How could this woman casually offer him such an invitation?

If she said she could get him an invitation to the Piers annual meeting or a charity banquet held by the Piers, he might reluctantly believe her. But she just mentioned Elder Piers’ birthday banquet, and that it’s the day after tomorrow. How come he hadn’t heard of it?

Seeing Oswald’s expression, Bertha knew he hadn’t heard about the birthday affair and didn’t trust her words. Actually, she didn’t believe it herself, but for a chance of escape for herself and Maria, she had to hold on; silently hoping Adam would have the conscience to send someone to contact her, providing a way out.

"I must be crazy, listening to your nonsense!" Oswald sneered coldly, his lips curled sinisterly. He turned around and beckoned his two cronies behind him, "Try this woman first, bros. Hand the other one to you two, play a bit, and we’ll swap later?"

Both Bertha and Maria, sitting on the ground, turned pale, staring at Oswald with fright.

Seeing this, Oswald sneered triumphantly, "Did you think you could mess with me, and I’d let you off easily? Behave and please me; maybe then we’ll talk. But if you insist on refusing a toast, don’t blame me for playing you to death."

With those words, the two men behind Oswald started to grab Maria.

Bertha trembled violently, shielding Maria, yet she tried to contain her deep fear and bravely faced the vile men in front, "Oswald, aren’t you aware that Elder Piers is celebrating the day after tomorrow? Why not inquire about it? With your connections, you should be able to clear this up, and there’ll be time to settle accounts with me later."

"Ha, trying to provoke me?" Oswald jeered.

Bertha continued to shield Maria, "No matter the method, it shouldn’t take Oswald more than a few minutes."

Looking at Bertha’s determined demeanor, Oswald’s brow raised, finding this woman astonishingly beautiful, causing his patience to grow, "Alright, let’s see what trick you have up your sleeve."

Finishing his words, Oswald waved to the back, and the two men getting ready to play around with Maria reluctantly stepped back.

Seeing this, Bertha’s legs weakened, yet she forced herself upright, smiling to comfort the terrified Maria behind her.

Maria saw Bertha’s smile uglier than crying, feeling both touched and scared, gripping Bertha’s back collar tightly with one hand.

Feeling Maria’s action, Bertha straightened her body further, as the palm holding her phone in her pocket was drenched in sweat, nearly praying in her heart for Adam to message back soon.

Next to them, Oswald picked up his phone, dialed a number, and the room fell into an eerie silence, broken only by Maria’s fear-heavy breathing.

After what seemed ages, Oswald’s phone buzzed.

The Lewis family is a rising star in Swallow City, yet distant from the core of Swallow City’s elites. Nevertheless, they have some connections. After Oswald took the call, his expression toward Bertha shifted slightly, "Did Master Adam tell you last night?"

Bertha initially planned to fabricate an excuse but seeing Oswald’s question, she decisively nodded, "Yes."

Yet Oswald hesitated, "Master Adam would disclose such crucial info to a woman like you?"

Bertha’s face turned pale at his words, "I’m not!"

"Heh, sooner or later you will be." Oswald didn’t care what Bertha was, but if Adam disclosed such vital info to this woman upon first meeting, did it mean she held special sway over him, and that getting her to ask Adam for an invitation might actually work?

If he could somehow infiltrate Elder Piers’ birthday banquet, it would mean breaking into the core of the Piers family. Wouldn’t he easily secure a foothold in Swallow City afterward?

The more Oswald pondered, the more fervently he gazed at Bertha, but then suddenly, a rich young man behind Oswald whispered, "Oswald, doesn’t that woman seem familiar?"

Oswald was excited, hearing the crony’s voice, he scanned Bertha again, "Didn’t you just see her yesterday? Wouldn’t she be familiar?"

"It’s not just yesterday; I think I’ve seen her somewhere before. And isn’t it strange that Master Adam saw this woman dancing and had you delete the video? Could they already know each other?" The man continued analyzing.

Bertha’s heart clenched. Initially, she hadn’t ruled out revealing her identity, but if word about her dancing at nightclubs reached her father, who knows how he’d scold her. Moreover, her broken engagement with Adam is well-known within the circle. If Oswald recognized her, he’d realize she and Adam were actually enemies; she’d be unable to secure any Piers invitations for him.

"Yes, I know Adam Piers. I’ve been fascinated with him since he debuted..." Before everyone could react, Bertha nervously explained herself, deliberately distorting the man’s words, making Oswald think she knew Adam, but Adam didn’t know her.

Just as she finished, another person behind Oswald suddenly asked, "Isn’t her surname Swift?"

Bertha wobbled slightly; this is it!
