Chapter 1002: Does He Deserve to Like Her?
Chapter 1002: Chapter 1002: Does He Deserve to Like Her?
Three minutes after Bertha Swift had left, Adam Piers was still in a daze.
He stared blankly at the three transactions on his phone, feeling as if he’d been slapped three times — painful and exhilarating!
Ray Leighton walked in and saw the dazed Adam, holding the traditional Flowery medicine that Bertha Swift had rejected. "Master Adam, why did Miss Swift leave? What should we do with this medicine?"
Adam glanced at Ray, then at the medicine in his hand. "She wouldn’t drink it?"
Ray nodded.
"Then you drink it." Adam threw out this sentence, finally getting up to call David Locke.
Ray thought he was hearing things, looked at Adam who stood up, and then at the still warm, dark traditional Flowery medicine in his hand, "Master Adam, this is medicine, not barbecue. Eating it randomly could kill someone."
"I’ve tried it, it won’t kill you." Adam replied, suppressing his bottled-up anger, and dialed the phone.
But as soon as David Locke’s voice came on the line, Adam realized that he was the one who had authorized the payment; it was already sent. What use was it to call David?
On the other end, David received the call but heard nothing from Adam, somewhat confused, "Master Adam, did you dial the wrong number?"
"No." Adam replied sullenly.
"If it’s not a wrong number, then say something. What’s the point of brooding over the phone, like I can see you?" David retorted unceremoniously.
Adam, "..."
To hell with brooding!
Taking a deep breath, Adam spoke, "When do we start filming?"
"March third." David, knowing Adam had invested a lot of money, didn’t think much of his concern for the project’s progress and answered promptly.
"That late?" Upon hearing the date, Adam quickly did the math in his head and immediately felt dissatisfied.
David felt a headache coming, "Just sixteen days left, is that late? Any sooner and we won’t finish the preparations."
"Can you move it up..."
"No, unless you want to direct it yourself?" David was not to be easily pushed around either.
Adam was stumped, realizing he was being unreasonable, he sighed, "Just be quick."
After speaking, Adam hung up and sat back down, looking frustrated.
Ray, seeing his boss in such a state, looked down at the traditional Flowery medicine in his hand, thinking it might be more suitable for Master Adam, he looked like he needed a clear head.
But just as Ray thought of this, Adam suddenly looked up at him.
Ray forced a laugh, "Master Adam, I suddenly remembered I have something to do, I’ll just..."
Halfway through, Ray’s throat was constricted by the menacing atmosphere emanating from Adam, painfully raising the traditional Flowery medicine in his hand, ready to drink it under Adam’s oppressive aura, when suddenly there was a knock at the door.
Ray’s movement paused, he eagerly looked over to see Bertha Swift, who had just left, returning unexpectedly, and shouted excitedly, "Master Adam, Miss Swift is back!"
After shouting, Ray rushed over to open the door for the person outside.
Adam looked over at Ray’s words in disbelief, but the brief brightness in his eyes quickly dimmed again.
Although the hat and outfit were similar, Adam could tell at a glance it wasn’t Bertha Swift.
After opening the door, Ray realized he had mistaken Zoe Thatcher for someone else once she spoke, but once at the door, he refused to accept the punishment of drinking traditional Flowery medicine, letting Zoe in and then slipping away.
Only Adam and Zoe remained in the room due to Ray’s actions.
Unaware of the situation, Zoe felt that Adam’s mood was particularly low today, worried, "Adam, what’s wrong?"
"Nothing." Even when feeling terrible, Adam tried not to let his emotions show to others, replying blandly, then glanced at Zoe’s outfit, and the items in her hands, "I know the rumors weren’t made by you. You needn’t feel guilty. As for yesterday’s meal, you’ve already expressed your thanks; there’s no need to trouble yourself again."
"I’m not troubling myself..."
"You know what I mean." Zoe was holding the food she had personally prepared for Adam, but before she could finish, the man ruthlessly interrupted her, a look of embarrassment flashed across her face.
Adam, however, seemed not to notice, "Have Ray take you home, Ray!"
Adam raised his voice on the last two words.
Though mentally complaining, Ray obediently waited outside. As soon as Adam shouted, he hurried in, "Master Adam."
"Take Miss Thatcher home for me." After saying that, Adam stood up and walked directly toward the bathroom.
Zoe looked at Adam’s back, unwilling to move, clearly, Adam had agreed to have dinner with her yesterday; after returning to the hospital, she confessed, though he refused, he didn’t firmly reject her either. But overnight, how did things change...
At this thought, her mind flashed back to the woman she met at the staircase earlier. She had also seen her last night. Even without makeup, the woman remained strikingly beautiful; unforgettable at first sight. But didn’t she reject Adam?
"Miss Thatcher, Miss Thatcher..."
"Ah, oh, thank you, Assistant Leighton." Ray had to call several times to bring Zoe back to reality, then politely gestured for her to leave. Zoe gave a bitter smile and left with Ray.
Bathroom.
As soon as Adam entered, he saw the bathroom, and immediately, images of Bertha Swift bathing there last night flashed in his mind. Pausing, he forcibly suppressed those images and took a shower.
After the shower, Adam returned, memories of last night’s scenes on the hospital bed flashed in his mind. He squeezed his eyes shut tightly, almost wanting to slap himself. What was there to think about that heartless woman?
Vexed, he lay back on the bed, his body ached slightly from the wound in the shower. He thought of the bruises on Bertha Swift’s shoulder and lower back, "Ray!"
Having just seen off Zoe, Ray caught his breath, rolled his eyes, and pushed open the room door at the sound of Adam’s call, "Master Adam, what now?"
Adam shot him a sidelong glance, "You seem impatient?"
"I wouldn’t dare, Master Adam, if you need anything, just let me know." Ray Leighton quickly adjusted his attitude.
"Find out what’s going on with Bertha Swift and Oswald Lewis, did they lay hands on her?" Thinking of the injuries on Bertha Swift’s body, Adam Piers’ expression was particularly grim.
Ray Leighton didn’t expect this matter to be related to Bertha Swift again. After agreeing, he sighed inwardly, thinking that Master Adam had already crawled out of Bertha Swift’s pit and was moved by Miss Thatcher’s gentle cuteness. It seemed he had thought too much.
Not only has Master Adam not crawled out of Miss Swift’s pit, it appears he is sinking deeper.
After Ray Leighton went out to handle business, Adam Piers picked up his phone and looked again at the transfer information Bertha Swift sent him. The more he looked, the angrier he got. He knew that woman was particularly short of money now, but to get rid of him, she didn’t even think before transferring all her three hundred thousand in earnings to him.
Does she think he’s a monster?
Anger surged within him, yet he couldn’t help worrying about that woman, wondering how she’d live now that she had sent all her money to him. What if she doesn’t take medicine or eat properly?
Realizing what he was thinking, Adam Piers cursed himself inwardly for being foolish, wanting to find something to distract himself, so he opened his email to work, but the first thing he saw was the information Ray Leighton sent him yesterday about Bertha Swift’s recent days, and he couldn’t resist opening it.
From what he could see, Bertha Swift had indeed been living quite miserably since leaving the Swift family; not only renting a cheap apartment but also sharing with others. She had been taking on many part-time jobs. No wonder she hadn’t taken care of her health. But he couldn’t quite understand why, since she was doing part-time work, she couldn’t afford to eat, until his gaze landed on Bertha Swift’s travel itinerary from a week ago.
Staring at the city Bertha Swift had flown to, Adam Piers’ hands trembled with excitement, and he then dialed a number, asking them to check Bertha Swift’s itinerary for that day. He soon got an answer.
It turned out he wasn’t dreaming that night, nor did he mistake her for someone else!
On the night he fell off a cliff and was admitted to this small hospital at West Mountain, Bertha Swift was also at West Mountain. It was Bertha Swift who fed him water, gave him emergency treatment, and called the doctor.
That woman cares about him!
Adam Piers had never been so certain that Bertha Swift cared about him as he was at that moment. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have flown across the distance to Anson City and then made her way to West Mountain to visit him at his hospital after learning he had an accident, even when she had almost no money left.
Too surprised and thrilled, Adam Piers couldn’t control his emotions and directly dialed Bertha Swift’s number.
This number, he hadn’t dialed since he learned she had terminated their child, yet now he couldn’t help calling it.
The phone rang for a long time before being picked up, the voice on the other end was cold and indifferent, "Does Master Adam have any other matter?"
"Bertha Swift, you went to West Mountain to see me, right?" Adam Piers didn’t care about Bertha Swift’s attitude, he asked impatiently.
Bertha Swift obviously didn’t expect Adam Piers’ first question to be about this, nor did she expect him to know about it. She paused for quite a while but didn’t deny it, her attitude remained indifferent, "Is this why Master Adam called? Yes, if there’s nothing else, goodbye."
"Bertha Swift, don’t hang up!" Adam Piers heard the woman’s single affirmative and was trembling with excitement, anxiously shouting.
Bertha Swift held the phone without moving, looking up at the clear sky, "What does Master Adam want to say?"
Her words left the previously emotional Adam Piers somewhat at a loss, it took him a while to control his tone, "Bertha Swift, you like me, don’t you?"
Adam Piers’ voice was very light, carrying a hint of nervousness that was barely noticeable.
With her head slightly raised to watch the sky, Bertha Swift paused but did not deny it. She knew that at least when she went to West Mountain, there was still lingering attachment and affection for the man on the other side of the phone, but this attachment was reduced to remnants after their two encounters. She smirked self-deprecatingly, "Adam Piers, does it matter? From the time I paid back your patronage fee at ten times the amount, there’s nothing between us, as for that insignificant affection, is it important?"
At this, Bertha Swift chuckled self-deprecatingly again, asking and answering herself, "Adam Piers, it’s not important to me anymore. If you have any conscience, stop bothering me in the future."
Adam Piers held his breath instinctively as he heard Bertha Swift’s first sentence. When he heard Bertha Swift speak of her affection, his heart was already in his throat, until Bertha Swift asked him if it was important?
The emotion in that was too complicated; it was also the first time Bertha Swift did not hide her affection here, causing Adam Piers to nod uncontrollably, wanting to tell the woman how important it was, very important, but before he could say it, Bertha Swift had already answered herself.
Adam Piers, it’s not important to me anymore. If you have any conscience, stop bothering me in the future, don’t come back to bother me in the future...
The voice of the woman on the other side was like ashes, with no major ups and downs, but Adam Piers seemed to feel her disappointment, even despair. Stifling his emotions, it was making him uncomfortable, he softly called, "Bertha Swift, Bertha Swift... Bertha, listen to me..."
Buzz buzz buzz!
Before Adam Piers could finish speaking, Bertha Swift had already hung up.
Staring at the dark screen of the phone, Adam Piers felt utterly lost. So Bertha Swift initially did not react to his pursuit, she even liked him more than he thought, but...
Thinking of all he had done these two days, and the way the woman’s eyes lit up when he stormed into the private room last night, yet those lights dimmed with his wanton humiliation.
His heart felt like it was being stabbed with a knife; Adam Piers didn’t understand why, she clearly had feelings for him, yet why did she terminate their child, even under the premise that terminating it would harm her own body, she chose to give up?
Images of fragmented memories flashed through Adam Piers’ mind, until he recalled the time he angrily questioned Bertha Swift after she had just undergone the procedure. At that time, she seemed to have said something about listening to her explanation, but he was too shocked, angry, and heartbroken to give her a chance to speak.
So what was she trying to say at that time?
Adam Piers suddenly stood up and dialed the central hospital dean, "Dean Curme, this is Adam Piers from Piers Corporation. I’d like to ask you to do me a favor."
Half an hour later, Adam Piers received an electronic medical report of Bertha Swift’s hospitalization back then, he scanned through it rapidly, and finally his gaze landed on a diagnosis sheet, prominently written: fetal right kidney absence, developmental delay, recommendation for termination.
Despite being just a dozen words, Adam Piers stared at it for a full ten minutes; clearly, he recognized each word, yet somehow he didn’t grasp the meaning within.
So he stayed stunned for a long time, until Ray Leighton pushed the door open to enter the ward; only then did Adam Piers slowly lift his head, his voice hoarse as he asked, "How’s the investigation going?"
Ray Leighton looked somewhat somber, not expecting the process to be like this at all. He glanced at his own Master Adam’s face and cautiously reported, "Miss Swift did not take the stage, Oswald Lewis seeing your message took it upon himself to assume you liked Miss Swift’s type, treating her as a night scene girl. After Miss Swift refused, he forcibly sent her to you; the injuries were probably sustained during Miss Swift’s struggle, Oswald Lewis even threatened Miss Swift if she refused to serve you, then... then..."
"Then what?" Hearing Ray Leighton’s stammering, Adam Piers’ expression grew darker, his voice colder as he asked.
Ray Leighton had no choice but to continue, "Then he’d have those three people together ruin Su..."
"Bastard!" Ray Leighton hadn’t finished speaking when Adam Piers couldn’t stand hearing anymore, he cursed angrily; thinking about the woman being forced to terminate, he mistakenly believed she ended the engagement voluntarily, while the Swift family parents enraged by the terminated engagement directly expelled Bertha Swift from the family and froze all her accounts.
His heart felt as if it was being violently squeezed, pain turned Adam Piers’ face pale. It was all because of him, if it weren’t for him, that woman wouldn’t have had to suffer such torment and humiliation, let alone being forced into abusive encounters with someone like Oswald Lewis, while he himself was the greatest accomplice!
And the child...
Clearly, she should have been the most heartbroken about losing the child, and the one enduring the most physical harm was also herself, yet what did he do? From start to finish, he never gave her the chance to explain, still claiming he liked her, yet what had he done these past two days?
Does he deserve to say he likes her?
Hahaha...
