Chapter 486: Chapter 488 The Man in Black Robe Who Planned Everything
At night, Pei Huaian lay in bed, restless and unable to sleep, with the events of the day replaying in his mind.
Images of Shao He being captured by the Man in Black Robe sliced through his heart like thousands of knives, making it hard for him to breathe.
He forced himself to calm down and think about what he needed to do next.
"Thud, thud, thud..." Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
Pei Huaian frowned and stared at the door warily, "Who is it?"
"It’s me."
Pei Huaian breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing the voice. He got out of bed, opened the door, and saw the person standing there, inviting him to come in and sit.
"Why did the Imperial Uncle take Shao He with him? Don’t you know how dangerous that is?"
"It was Shao He who insisted on coming to see you. His Majesty had no choice but to accompany her."
Pei Huaian then realized he had misunderstood.
"The Man in Black Robe came specifically for Shao He this time, he wants to use Shao He to save someone, so she should be safe for the time being," Pei Huaian had already pieced together the truth of the situation.
The Man in Black Robe took advantage of the greed of Nameless Village and cast a vast net, waiting for us to fall into it.
It was unexpected that the Man in Black Robe was so patient, preparing for a long time just for Shao He.
"So, what do we do now?" Pei Hanze asked.
Although Shao He was temporarily out of danger, who knew whether the Man in Black Robe might suddenly go mad?
Moreover, this person was cruel; if he wasn’t dealt with soon, there would be endless trouble.
"Tomorrow, I will first scout around to see if I can find the whereabouts of the Man in Black Robe," Pei Huaian thought for a moment before answering.
"The strength of the Man in Black Robe is unfathomable, and if you go alone, I fear it might be dangerous," Pei Hanze expressed his concern.
Pei Huaian’s determination was set, and he would not shrink back easily, "Imperial Uncle, rest assured, I will be very careful."
The next day, as dawn broke, Pei Huaian left quietly without a sound.
He told no one of his departure and went to Nameless Village alone. Disguised, Pei Huaian blended in with the villagers. He looked around and confirmed there was nothing out of the ordinary before rushing toward a certain location.
Following the route in his memory, Pei Huaian finally arrived at his destination, but he dared not enter rashly, for he discovered that the place was full of traps that would threaten his life with the slightest misstep.
Pei Huaian avoided the mechanisms, skirted the traps, and at last reached his target. He held his breath and surveyed the surroundings.
He quickly found a hidden chamber behind a huge boulder. Pei Huaian slowly descended; the chamber was lined with Luminous Pearls, illuminating the whole space as if it were broad daylight.
Pei Huaian stood in front of a wooden carved door. He attempted to push it open, but it wouldn’t budge.
"It must be here," a faint smile momentarily played on Pei Huaian’s lips.
He figured out how to open the Stone Gate and slipped into the dark chamber.
The chamber was pitch black, and one couldn’t see their own hands in front of their face until Pei Huaian took out a Firestarter from his clothing and lit it, revealing the contents of the chamber.
The chamber was filled with many bookshelves holding various books and antiques, a stone table and chairs, and walls hung with various weapons such as swords, crossbows, spears, and more. Beside them, there were rows of cabinets filled with various herbs and treasures of gold and silver.
Seeing all this, Pei Huaian’s lips curled slightly. He guessed this place held what the Man in Black Robe needed, and it must be his lair.
Pei Huaian continued to the stone platform in the center of the chamber. After feeling around on it for a while, he touched something. He then took out a dagger and cut his palm, letting the blood drip into a groove on the platform.
"Click!" The platform slowly moved, revealing a passage, and Pei Huaian didn’t hesitate to enter.
The deeper Pei Huaian went into the passage, the darker it grew. He squinted his eyes, carefully distinguishing his steps. Even though he couldn’t see, he could accurately identify where the steps were.
After about ten meters, Pei Huaian stopped. This should be the bottom, he thought as he reached out and felt for the candle on the wall.
"Click—" The candle was lit, and the stone door in front of him opened once more.
Shao He, alert upon hearing the noise, stood up in surprise at seeing who was entering, "Huaian? You..."
"Shao He?"
Pei Huaian rushed over and embraced her, holding her tightly in his arms.
Leaning against his chest, Shao He felt the warmth he offered, her eyes reddening as she softly called out, "Huaian..."
"You’re such a fool. Didn’t I tell you to wait for me in Capital City? Why did you have to come here?" Pei Huaian stroked her hair, unwilling to let go for even a moment.
"You hadn’t been in touch for many days, and I was so worried," Shao He said with a low voice.
Pei Huaian let go of Shao He and, seeing the bandage around her neck, asked, "What happened here?"
Shao He briefly described the situation. Pei Huaian’s expression grew dark, his eyes icy and his body emitting a freezing aura, "He dared to hurt you!"
"All of this was his doing. He deliberately stirred panic in Jingzhou and lured its officials to set the city on fire, all to force you to come. But his ultimate goal was me—he wanted my help to save someone," Shao He explained.
Pei Huaian gripped Shao He’s shoulders, looking sternly into her eyes, "I’ve said it before, whoever hurts you, I won’t let them get away with it!"
Staring into his deep and resolute eyes, Shao He’s anxious heart finally settled down.
"Don’t be impulsive. We are at a disadvantage right now. Let’s wait a little longer." Shao He believed the Man in Black Robe wouldn’t harm her for the moment, as he likely still had unfinished business.
