Chapter 442: Chapter 444: Past Tribulations
Shao He finished treating Xu Han’s body and wiped her down, then instructed the servants to replace all the bedding and everything else on the bed.
Once she was certain that Xu Han wasn’t feeling unwell, she folded away the bed canopy and walked outside to open the door, "Come in."
Eldest Princess Huimin and Yan Ze rushed into the room as soon as they could, first checking on Xu Hai and then the child.
By the table, Shao He began to write a prescription, while Pei Huaian stood behind her, his gaze burning intensely as he watched her.
Her serious demeanor was particularly enchanting, especially when she was focused.
After Shao He finished writing the prescription, she turned around and found herself caught in the man’s deep eyes, her cheeks tinting slightly red.
"Doctor Shao, is there anything wrong with the child?" Yan Ze asked with a hint of worry.
"The child needs to be exposed to sunlight for jaundice, and in these next few days, both the baby and adults should avoid drafts. It would be best if the child could be breastfed, as it is beneficial for the baby."
"Alright, is there anything else we should be mindful of?"
Shao He pondered for a moment, then took another piece of paper and wrote down all the care instructions and the items a pregnant woman should consume, listing everything on the paper.
"I’ve written everything down. If you follow the instructions on this paper, there shouldn’t be any problems."
Shao He approached the bedside to glance at the newborn. Though the baby was only seven months old, less than a kilogram and not even a full two pounds, its size was not small, and its cries were loud and clear.
"You can come to Anji Hall to find me if you have any issues, and if I’m not there, you can go directly to my residence."
"Much appreciated," Yan Ze expressed his immense gratitude.
Pei Huaian left with Shao He, and before they even managed to leave the estate, Eldest Princess Huimin caught up with them, "Wait a moment."
Both stopped in their tracks and turned to look. Eldest Princess Huimin approached them and said to Pei Huaian, "May I have a private word with Doctor Shao?"
The smile on Pei Huaian’s lips slowly faded, and his brows furrowed tightly, "Aunt... "
Before he could finish his sentence, Eldest Princess Huimin interrupted with a playful laugh, "I won’t eat him; I just want to talk to her for a moment."
"You wait here for me," Shao He signaled him with her eyes to stay put.
Though Pei Huaian was still worried, considering that Shao He had just saved Xu Han and her child, his aunt was unlikely to harm Shao He at this time, and so he let go.
Shao He followed Eldest Princess Huimin, and the two stopped by the pond. To ease the awkward silence, Eldest Princess Huimin let out a light cough, "Thank you for this time."
"Your Highness has already thanked me. I presume you called me here for something other than to express gratitude," Shao He replied.
Eldest Princess Huimin turned to face her, the admiration in her eyes evident, "You are indeed very clever."
"You flatter me, Your Highness."
"Since that’s the case, I’ll get straight to the point. Huaian once witnessed Consort Ming being harmed, which caused him endless nightmares, leaving him in a daze for a month before he began to recover. Throughout that time, he treated his maids like a demon," she said bluntly.
"Many said he had gone mad. They had to bind him with cloth every day, but even that couldn’t restrain him; it only made him more violent."
Shao He listened with a flicker of surprise in her eyes; Pei Huaian had undergone such an ordeal.
"What happened after that?"
Eldest Princess Huimin shook her head with a bitter smile, "Eventually, we had no choice but to lock him in a room until he passed out from hunger. When he woke up, he was back to his usual self."
She lifted her eyes to the sky, sighing as she continued, "I’ve advised him countless times, but Huaian has always been immersed in his own thoughts. I don’t know what to do. Please, consider this matter for me."
Shao He lowered her eyes; so that was how Pei Huaian’s agitation came to be.
Yet, who could readily accept seeing a loved one harmed?
"Thank you, Your Highness," Shao He said, bowing slightly.
Eldest Princess Huimin looked at her earnestly, "I once thought you were not worthy of Huaian, that he deserved a better woman by his side. Now I see that I was mistaken."
She paused before continuing, "Huaian has been sensible, mature, and kind-hearted since he was young."
"I remember when he was younger, he liked wearing blue robes with a white cloak, looking aloof and proud, always sitting in the branches looking at the sky, as if he lived beyond reach, in the clouds."
"Unfortunately, the world changes too swiftly. In the blink of an eye, he disappeared. When I found him, he had become someone else..."
Tears suddenly filled Eldest Princess Huimin’s eyes, tracing paths down her cheeks.
Shao He offered a handkerchief with understanding; perhaps Eldest Princess Huimin truly cared for Pei Huaian and had never thought of using his status for any personal gain.
She only sincerely wished for his happiness, but in doing so, perhaps had employed the wrong methods.
"I will take good care of him, and he won’t be alone anymore. The child and I will keep him company," Shao He promised solemnly.
Eldest Princess Huimin grasped Shao He’s hand, "I was wrong before; I hope you two can spend your lives together."
In that moment, both showed genuine smiles.
On their way back, Pei Huaian kept asking Shao He what they had talked about.
With a smile, Shao He said, "Her Highness shared some stories about your childhood, saying how mischievous you were, always climbing trees."
"How come Aunt told you everything..." Pei Huaian touched his nose, embarrassed.
Shao He didn’t tell Pei Huaian the truth, believing he wouldn’t want her to know about the hardships he had endured. She decided it was better to pretend she was unaware.
