Chapter 437 - 439: Preferring the Beauty over the Empire

Chapter 437: Chapter 439: Preferring the Beauty over the Empire

Shao He had never experienced such dependence on another person until she met Pei Huaian, who gave her an unprecedented sense of security.

"I won’t let go unless you promise to stay by my side," he declared.

She lifted her head, gazing at him with wide eyes that reddened at the rims, tears brimming but not falling.

Pei Huaian looked at her stubborn expression and sighed, "Alright, I’ll accompany you."

"Really?" she asked, delight evident in her voice.

Pei Huaian nodded, took her by the hand, and led her to the carriage, helping her in and settling her down.

He then climbed into the carriage, pulled down the curtains, and ordered the coachman to set off.

"Huaian," Shao He called, gazing at Pei Huaian with eager eyes.

"Go to sleep," Pei Huaian patted her head softly, coaxing her to close her eyes.

"I can’t bear to lose you," Shao He realized for the first time how important Pei Huaian was to her.

It wasn’t just because Xiao Linzhang needed a father, but because he made her once-still heart flutter.

Shao He wrapped her arms around his waist, her eyes welled with glistening tears.

She feared that when she woke up, he would be gone.

"Be good, listen to me," Pei Huaian patted her back again.

Shao He, inhaling the faint sandalwood scent from his body, slowly drifted to sleep.

Pei Huaian held her in his embrace, his fingers brushing through her soft hair, his gaze complex and shadowed. The hand at her waist tightened slightly, pulling her even closer to him.

After a moment of silence, he spoke tenderly, "How could I possibly abandon you? I will never abandon you, nor will I ever push you away from me."

Sunlight streamed through the window lattice, flooding the room with a warm sensation.

In the bed, bathed in sunlight, Shao He’s skin looked soft and delicate, reminiscent of a newborn’s tender bloom.

Her rosy cheeks hinted at an allure that seemed almost sinful, and her long, curled lashes lay shut tight, the corners of her mouth upturned in a slight smile, as though she was enjoying a pleasant dream.

Pei Huaian, sitting nearby, looked strikingly handsome—his features sharp and defined, his lips lightly pressed together in a reserved demeanor.

He reached out to stroke Shao He’s cheek, his gaze softening as he admired her sleeping beauty, mixed feelings of fondness and helplessness in his eyes.

Eventually, he bent down to place a gentle kiss on her forehead, then sat up to get dressed.

There came a knocking on the door, "My lord, are you awake yet?"

Pei Huaian opened the door to find Ah Mo standing outside.

"What is it?"

"Several princes have arrived and are waiting in the front hall," Ah Mo reported respectfully.

"Hmm, I see," Pei Huaian replied before turning back to change his clothes.

"What’s going on..." Shao He, still groggy, heard the voices and slowly opened her sleepy eyes, murmuring in a low voice.

"It’s nothing, go back to sleep," Pei Huaian turned to look at the person in bed, speaking softly.

Shao He blinked her eyes and, seeing the person already dressed, abruptly sat up from the bed, "Where are you going?"

"Pei Chengye has brought a few Imperial Brothers over—I should go out to meet them."

"Oh."

Only then did Shao He relax and with a "plop," she laid back down on the bed.

In the hall, Pei Siyang expressed his doubts, "Second brother, could you be overthinking it? Doctor Shao is our fifth brother’s wife-to-be. How could she harm him?"

"That’s right, second brother. You’re being outrageous. It’s nothing short of alarmist," Pei Haolan said lazily, yawning in his chair, clearly having not slept well.

Pei Jingyi’s eyes flickered slightly, offering no comment on the matter.

Amidst their conversation, Pei Huaian, dressed in white, walked in.

"What brings my brothers to visit my residence with such leisure today?"

Pei Chengye was shocked to see the arriving figure.

Pei Siyang and the others cast reproachful looks at Pei Chengye, feeling that he had made a big fuss over nothing.

"Today is my day off, and with nothing particular to do, I thought I’d visit and see how you are," Pei Siyang explained.

Pei Huaian smiled faintly, his gaze resting on Pei Chengye as he asked, "I don’t know if my brothers have eaten. Why not stay and dine together?"

"Great, great! I was dragged over here early in the morning and haven’t eaten yet."

Pei Haolan, hearing the promise of food, naturally wouldn’t pass up the opportunity, and the others had no choice but to agree.

During the meal, Pei Haolan suddenly spoke, "I heard the Little Imperial Uncle has returned to the Capital City. Have any of you encountered him?"

The men shook their heads. The Little Imperial Uncle was an enigma; even The Emperor and the Empress Dowager afforded him a measure of deference.

"I just saw him yesterday," Pei Huaian said with a smile.

This statement immediately drew the gaze of the others, who curiously asked, "What did the Little Imperial Uncle say to you?"

"He didn’t say much, just exchanged greetings and left," Pei Huaian continued eating calmly, while the others couldn’t maintain his composure.

Everyone had their own thoughts, especially Pei Chengye and Pei Jingyi, who were worried Pei Huaian might receive the Little Imperial Uncle’s support.

After all, the Little Imperial Uncle still held a military token, allowing him to command the Imperial Guard and troops of the Capital City at will.

What was most significant was his historic military achievements; one could say he had won half the kingdom, and many soldiers in the court held high respect for him.

However, the Little Imperial Uncle had no interest in the throne; to put it bluntly, he preferred beauties over empires.

This was why The Emperor and the Empress Dowager were wary of him but had still not moved to eliminate him.

It was said that he once nearly lost his life for a woman, thankfully being rescued in the end.
