Chapter 426: Chapter 428: There is an Assassin
"This patient has no good intentions."
Pei Huaian felt somewhat uneasy upon hearing this. A man’s intuition told him that Xiao Jiangheng’s approaches were far from mere friendly acts.
Men understand men best; he was certain that Xiao Jiangheng’s motives were not pure.
"Don’t worry, I will stay as far away from him as possible in the future and avoid meeting him privately," Shao He said seriously, holding Pei Huaian’s hand.
Pei Huaian looked at her in surprise and explained, "That’s not what I meant."
"I understand, but after all, I am the Fifth Prince’s Consort. If my relationship with another man is too intimate, it will inevitably affect you," Shao He now considered Pei Huaian in her actions, not wanting his efforts to go unrewarded.
Pei Huaian gently embraced Shao He, burying his face in her neck.
His warm breath on her ear made her body tingle all over.
"I know you’re thinking of me, thank you!" Pei Huaian’s gentle voice came from behind.
Shao He, feeling the warmth and strength he conveyed, was moved and hugged him tightly in return.
The two clung to each other, neither speaking a word.
After a long time, Pei Huaian finally let go of the person in his arms and said, "I will never let you down in this life."
"Then shouldn’t you also explain how it came to be that entering and leaving, staying in the same tent is what it looks like?"
Shao He didn’t like to keep words bottled up in her heart. It was better to clarify things so everyone could feel relieved,
"It has nothing to do with me. It was the woman brought by your medicine delivery person who shared a tent with him, entering and leaving together. I don’t know why it turned out this way when it reached the Capital City," Pei Huaian couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time.
Shao He knew there must have been a misunderstanding but still wanted to hear him say it himself. Only then could she feel at ease.
The two then wandered the streets for a long while, and Pei Huaian bought Shao He many strange and curious trinkets.
On their way back, suddenly a killing intent assaulted them. Pei Huaian stopped in his tracks, anxious.
"What’s wrong?" Sensing his abnormal behavior, Shao He asked puzzledly.
Pei Huaian didn’t reply but looked ahead warily as the familiar killing intent struck again.
He suddenly pulled Shao He aside, dodging a hidden weapon.
The weapon grazed the spot where they had just stood and struck the wall, leaving a deep mark.
Shao He widened her eyes in horror, looking towards the direction from which the hidden weapon had come, "What’s happening?"
"We’ve been targeted," Pei Huaian said with a grave voice, his brows tightly furrowed. "This killing intent is very strong; it must be an assassin."
"An assassin?"
"Yes," Pei Huaian nodded, "Let’s go."
"But..."
"There’s no ’but.’
Pei Huaian pulled her along and ran. They still didn’t know who was plotting against them, and it wasn’t wise to act rashly, especially when facing such a powerful assassin.
"Thinking of escaping?" the assassin sneered, blocking their way like a ghostly apparition.
"Who are you?" Pei Huaian narrowed his eyes and asked.
The assassin sneered, "Someone here to take your life."
"Ha...try me," Pei Huaian’s lips curled into a mocking smile as he kicked towards the masked figure, his moves sharp and fierce.
The masked figure easily dodged, flipping a dagger towards Pei Huaian in the process.
Pei Huaian sidestepped, quickly drawing his sword and chopping down the incoming weapon.
"Didn’t expect anyone to dodge my weapon. Interesting," the assassin coldly chuckled, his eerie tone chilling.
Pei Huaian watched him coldly, disdainfully saying, "Show me what else you’ve got."
"Hmph, boastful fool, courting death!" the assassin shouted angrily and charged at him.
Shao He stood aside in silence. Though she knew some martial arts, it was nothing compared to theirs. She couldn’t comprehend their advanced martial arts techniques and had to obediently wait on the side for the outcome.
After dozens of exchanges, Pei Huaian slapped the assassin’s shoulder, knocking him to the ground.
Pei Huaian raised the sword in his hand towards the assassin and said coldly, "You lost."
The man struggled to prop himself up from the ground, grinding his teeth and saying, "Don’t be too happy. The fight isn’t over yet."
Pei Huaian sneered, "Is that so?"
As soon as his words fell, the assassin suddenly lashed out, stabbing a dagger viciously towards his chest.
Pei Huaian swiftly tilted his head, dodging the deadly strike.
But the man, like a madman, waved his dagger as if desperate.
Pei Huaian stared at him coldly, chopping towards the assassin and seizing his dagger amidst the confusion.
He kicked the dagger to the ground and lifted it, drawing it across the man’s throat.
"Pfh—"
Pei Huaian’s figure wavered. Shao He ran to support him, her face turning pale as she saw his wounded arm and quickly checked his pulse.
"You’ve been poisoned."
Pei Huaian’s complexion grew worse, his body starting to shiver as he could no longer hold his sword, which fell to the ground.
Shao He bent down and started to suck out the poison mouth by mouth—it was the quickest way to save Pei Huaian.
"No, you mustn’t," Pei Huaian weakly said.
But he had no strength to resist and could only watch helplessly as Shao He sucked out all the poison and collapsed unconscious on the ground.
