Chapter 416: Chapter 148: How can the dead be resurrected?
Shao Zhengru felt a gaze filled with killing intent, and couldn’t help but shrink back in fear.
"Doctor Shao, you may not know, but my younger brother Pei Huaian becomes anxious like an ant on a hot pan whenever he can’t see you for even a moment," Pei Siyang said jokingly as he stepped forward.
"Yes, he was in such a hurry on our way here, so fast that he wished he had wings to fly straight to your side," Pei Haolan chimed in.
Shao He’s face reddened, and she lowered her head, saying nothing.
Pei Huaian withdrew his gaze and looked back at Pei Siyang and Pei Haolan.
"Big brother, third brother, stop teasing me. The royal banquet is about to start, let’s go inside," he said.
The two exchanged glances and walked into the banquet hall with a grin.
Watching their departing figures, Shao Zhengru breathed a sigh of relief, yet felt a deep sense of unwillingness.
In the side palace, everything was magnificent and splendid.
A group of beautiful women danced and sang melodiously, flitting amongst the palace chambers, with the continuous and pleasant sounds of string and woodwind instruments filling the air.
Inside the palace, it was resplendent with gold and decorated with dazzling jewels, every piece priceless. Just one could support an ordinary family for decades if sold.
The palace maids brought in food and drinks, quickly transforming the entire great hall anew.
The ministers took their seats one after another, with The Emperor seated in the place of honor.
The food on the table was extremely sumptuous, tempting one’s appetite with its appearance and aroma.
"Today is, after all, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and since this is a family banquet, my dear officials need not hold back," The Emperor said with a smile and a nod, raising his wine cup as a signal.
An eunuch immediately sang out loudly, "Serve the wine, serve the wine, fill the cups for the esteemed officials."
Right away, eunuchs with trays came before the ministers and filled everyone’s cups with wine.
A minister stood up, raised his cup, and said respectfully, "The Emperor is wise and brave, governing the country effectively, a rare enlightened and sage ruler in the history of the Great Yao Kingdom. This old official boldly toasts to The Emperor."
The Emperor smiled faintly and drained the wine cup.
What followed was a lively scene of toasting and merry-making, with the atmosphere becoming increasingly boisterous.
Shao Zhengru’s gaze stayed fixed on Shao He, as if contemplating what exactly to do.
Not until the royal banquet had ended did Shao Zhengru decide to wait a bit longer; he did not wish to completely fall out with Shao He.
However, he had never anticipated that he would be summoned by The Emperor to the Imperial Study Room.
He entered the room with a feeling of trepidation and prostrated himself on the ground.
Shao Zhengru had just performed his prostration when he heard the Emperor’s voice, cold and unemotional, "Rise!"
Shao Zhengru slowly got up and stood with a bowed posture.
The Emperor looked up at him, remained silent for a moment, and then suddenly said, "Doctor Shao, I remember, you once had a legitimate daughter married into the Marquis Pingnan’s Mansion."
"Yes, there was such an affair," replied Shao Zhengru, taken aback, wondering why The Emperor would suddenly mention this.
The Emperor’s piercing eyes stared at him as he slowly said, "Afterward, the Marquis Pingnan’s Mansion reported that the Lady Marquess of Pingnan had died; they even erected a tombstone for her. How can a dead person come back to life?"
"This..." Shao Zhengru’s body trembled violently.
He suddenly collapsed to the ground, kowtowing and begging for mercy, "Your... Your Majesty, please calm your anger, I did not know, I truly had no knowledge."
The Emperor scoffed, "So now, tell me, is she still alive?"
"I... I really do not know..." Shao Zhengru kept shaking his head desperately, his forehead banging against the hard floor with a thud.
The Emperor’s eyes narrowed, "You do not know?"
Desperately kowtowing, Shao Zhengru cried out, "Your Majesty sees clearly, I have never heard of anyone coming back to life."
The Emperor nodded slightly and said indifferently, "Then, it’s strange. If you are unaware, why falsely recognize a daughter? Your daughter, the Lady of the Marquis of Pingnan, is already dead, is she not?"
"Why don’t I take you to her grave to see for yourself, lest you always forget."
Shao Zhengru quickly realized The Emperor’s message was clear; he was telling him that Shao He was dead, and that a living person could never be Shao He.
"I admit my mistake, I was muddle-headed, for a moment my old eyes were blurred, and I mistook the person," he said.
"Ha, what a ’blurred old eyes’ excuse," The Emperor snorted coldly, his eyes narrowing dangerously, his tone chilling like ice chips falling upon one’s body, sending shivers down the spine.
Shao Zhengru knelt, trembling, "I admit my mistake and ask for Your Majesty’s punishment."
"Since you are now blind with age, then you should resign from your post."
"Your Majesty, I truly realize my mistake," pleaded Shao Zhengru.
If Shao Zhengru had known this would be the outcome, he would have never provoked Shao He.
The Emperor looked at him coldly and said slowly, "Do you wish to wait until the common people submit a petition against you, or would you resign voluntarily and save your life?"
Shao Zhengru was stunned; The Emperor was forcing his hand. Even if he did not resign, he would not have good days ahead; instead, he might face imprisonment.
"My patience is limited. If you remain stubbornly ignorant and refuse to repent, I will grant your wish," The Emperor stated majestically.
Shuddering all over, Shao Zhengru ground his teeth and said, "I thank Your Majesty for sparing my life; I am willing to resign and retire."
"Good," The Emperor commended, "I hope you will not make any foolish mistakes in the future."
Shao Zhengru responded respectfully and then retreated from the Imperial Study Room.
After leaving the palace, he furiously wiped away sweat, feeling a chill running down his spine.
He had originally thought he could rise to prominence using the affair with Shao He, but in the end, it caused his downfall. His heart was filled with even more hatred towards Shao He.
