Chapter 407: Chapter 409: Return to the Military Camp
Pei Huaian, upon hearing her words, revealed a faint smile and bowed his head to kiss her forehead.
"Ah He, wait for me," Pei Huaian said firmly.
"Okay," Shao He replied softly.
The night deepened, and the moon gradually rose.
Pei Huaian, seeing the person gradually fall asleep, took off his outer robe to cover her. Pei Huaian held Shao He, sitting until sunrise.
The morning sun shone on their faces, coating them in a soft glow as if they had stepped out of a painting.
Only then did Pei Huaian move, carrying Shao He back to their home to lie down, placing her on the bed and tucking her in with a "sleep well."
He affectionately touched her head before quietly leaving.
The moment he left the room, Shao He’s previously tightly closed eyes suddenly opened, her clear gaze as tranquil as water.
Pei Huaian flipped into the neighboring courtyard, where several Hidden Guards and Ah Mo were already waiting.
"Master."
"Speak," Pei Huaian directed, sitting on a stone bench.
The lead officers were the first to speak, "Someone attempted to assassinate Doctor Shao. These individuals seemed trained, either killers or Hidden Guards."
Ah Mo stepped forward and said with a bow, "Subordinate has investigated these people and they seem connected to the Fourth Prince, but everything went too smoothly, likely a deliberate framing."
"Pei Jingyi doesn’t have the courage yet." Pei Huaian knew he wouldn’t act rashly now, and the possibility of being framed was very high.
The only people who would want to remove Shao He were two, one being the Empress, the other, Pei Chengye.
The Empress was very clever, knowing not to make any mistakes at this time that could provide them a handle, so she definitely wouldn’t act rashly.
Furthermore, it was not her style to use such a method, which did not align with the Empress’s way of not leaving any traces behind.
Eliminating these, only one person remained, Pei Chengye!
Ah Mo continued, "Subordinate also found out Doctor Shao met the Second Prince on the street yesterday; coincidentally, a carriage got spooked, but fortunately, Doctor Shao reacted quickly and took control of the carriage."
"Have you found anything out?" Pei Huaian gently tapped the table, his face expressionless but his heart roiling like a tempest.
"The Second Prince and the owner of the carriage dined at the same restaurant."
"Surely it’s him," Pei Huaian’s gaze turned as frosty as ice.
He should have guessed earlier, apart from Pei Chengye, who else could it be?
"Keep a close watch on Pei Chengye in the next few days. As long as Shao He doesn’t leave the residence, he’ll have no way to act, even if he racks his brain."
"Yes," Ah Mo turned and retreated.
Pei Huaian waved his hand, and the Hidden Guard and others vanished on the spot.
Pei Huaian returned to the room and quietly walked to the bed. Seeing the sleeping woman, he removed his outer clothing, lay beside her, and fell into a deep sleep.
The sun gradually set, and it was only then that the two in the room slowly awakened.
After eating dinner, Pei Huaian prepared to leave.
The army had already reached thirty miles outside of Capital City; they should arrive in Capital City by early morning, and he must return to take command.
Before leaving, Pei Huaian embraced Shao He with reluctance. This confrontation against the Empress was exceedingly perilous, and he did not know what accidents might occur. He only prayed for his mother’s blessings for everything to go smoothly.
Shao He wrapped her arms around his waist and sighed softly, "Don’t worry, I’ll protect myself."
"Hmm," Pei Huaian released the woman from his embrace.
Pei Huaian leapt onto his steed, galloping towards the city outskirts.
Urging his horse forward, Pei Huaian arrived at the encampment located thirty miles outside of the city.
At this moment, as dawn broke and the sky turned white, shadows could be vaguely seen speeding towards him from afar, like an unstoppable army, a flood breaking through the dam.
Pei Huaian stood silently, gazing into the distance; moments later, a troop of black cavalrymen approached rapidly, reaching him in the blink of an eye, the leader’s slender figure prominently visible among the many black cavalrymen.
Luo Cheng raised his right hand, and the numerous black cavalrymen promptly reined in their horses, halting neatly in place.
He tightened the reins, and his horse neighed softly before coming to a steady stop; he dismounted and knelt on one knee.
"Luo Cheng pays respects to the Fifth Prince."
"Rise."
Luo Cheng stood up, his eyes now sparkling with bright stars, no longer as dim as before.
Luo Cheng followed Pei Huaian back to the tent, and the two entered the camp.
"Where did you run off to play? Without me?" the woman in the tent complained upon seeing him return.
Seeing Pei Huaian, she quickly got up and respectfully stepped aside, "Greetings, Fifth Prince."
"You all may leave for now," Pei Huaian said, needing to prepare thoroughly. This return to Capital City, he decided, would give everyone a massive surprise.
Luo Cheng pulled the woman out of the tent, "Didn’t I tell you not to run around? Why don’t you ever listen?"
"I, I was just too bored and thought to come find you. I didn’t expect you wouldn’t be in the camp, so I waited inside. I didn’t expect the Fifth Prince to return with you." The woman spoke, her head lowered in sadness.
Seeing her like this, Luo Cheng could not bear to scold her too much. He reminded her, "Capital City is different from the mountains; there are many more rules and etiquettes needed here. Are you sure you want to come back to Capital City with me?"
"Are you going to leave me behind?" the woman asked, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked up at him.
