Chapter 404: Chapter 406: Seeing Through the Ruse
Shao He came to her senses, smiling as she shook her head, "No worries, if there’s nothing else, I shall take my leave."
"Oh, alright." Yun Qian felt she was rather odd today, her words somewhat mysterious.
Zhao Yuebei, seeing the departing figure, asked with a serious expression, "Doctor Yun, have you prepared everything?"
"Mmm," Yun Qian nodded.
"Are you sure you want to do this? If it doesn’t succeed, have you considered the dangers you and the Fifth Prince would face? The Empress is not a merciful woman."
If it weren’t for his mother’s commanding influence, would he have survived till today? And if Doctor Yun hadn’t been sent away back then, how could the Empress have let him live until now?
While picking through the medicinal herbs in his hands, Yun Qian said, "Exactly because I know the Empress’s nature, I chose to accuse her. I can’t let more people be harmed; keeping the Empress would be akin to harboring trouble."
"And my Yun Family’s vengeance cannot go unavenged. He cannot let my father remain wrongfully dead; this case must be overturned to clear my father’s name," Yun Qian said, lifting his eyes toward the sky with a determined glint in his gaze.
On her way back, Shao He coincidentally ran into Pei Chengye, intending to take a detour, but he intercepted her first.
"What a coincidence, Doctor Shao."
Shao He took a step back, maintaining some distance, and bowed, "I have seen the Second Prince."
"Since when has Doctor Shao become so polite."
"Given the change in status, I naturally cannot continue acting without propriety as before."
Her words were clearly telling Pei Chengye that her current status as the Fifth Prince’s Consort meant he should maintain propriety as her brother-in-law.
Feigning ignorance, Pei Chengye said, "After all, Doctor Shao hasn’t married my younger brother yet. Why conclude so early?"
"With the recent victory of my younger brother, surely many well-born ladies wish to marry him. I wonder if he will receive double happiness?"
Backing away further from the approaching figure, Shao He responded, "Thank you for your concern, Second Prince, but please don’t trouble yourself over our affairs. You’d better spend more time attending to your Principal Wife. May you live in harmony and have a son soon!"
For some reason, Pei Chengye felt that her last two phrases of well-wishing sounded a bit off, as if tinged with sarcasm.
"Move aside, quick, clear the way!" Suddenly, cries echoed from afar. A carriage rampaged down the street, causing panic among the bystanders who scrambled to avoid it.
The carriage driver, red-faced and frantic, desperately whipped the horses, but they would not obey and continued their mad dash.
Seeing his opportunity, Pei Chengye was about to seize Shao He’s wrist to restrain her.
Suddenly, Shao He dashed forward, her silver needle piercing the horse’s body. The wildly running horse instantly calmed down, collapsing on the ground, breathless from exhaustion.
From a distance, the person poised to shoot lowered his bow and arrow, the crowd’s chaos making it impossible for him to aim at that figure.
Qingxia seemed to sense something and turned her head toward the opposite rooftop, but discovered nothing.
"Thank you, miss," the driver repeatedly expressed his gratitude.
"This horse was not scared without reason. It was drugged," Shao He revealed the reason for the horse’s frenzy, causing Pei Chengye, who was following, to pause in his steps.
Hearing this, the driver angrily said, "I must find that merchant to settle accounts!"
"It’s no use, you’ve been thoroughly duped. Be more cautious next time."
Turning to the approaching figure, Shao He saw that his expression didn’t show the slightest panic and expressed her surprise, "The Second Prince is truly composed. Such a major incident occurred, and yet you remain unruffled, as if you knew the horse would go mad."
A flicker of panic passed through Pei Chengye’s eyes as he hastily explained, "I don’t have the ability to foresee the future. How could I possibly know that the horse would suddenly go mad? Doctor Shao, you really like to joke."
"The Second Prince is right. Apart from the one who drugged the horse, how could anyone possibly know it would go mad?" Shao He said lightly, her lips curling into a mocking smile.
Pei Chengye inwardly cursed, coughing nervously, yet still managed to speak with composed assurance, "Since there’s nothing wrong, Doctor Shao should go back."
"Alright, the commoner girl shall take her leave."
Watching the disappearing figure around the corner, Pei Chengye’s eyes flashed with a sinister light.
...
In the imperial palace
The nanny reported respectfully with a bow, while the Empress lazily leaned on the phoenix throne, seeming to have fallen asleep.
A moment later, the Empress opened her eyes and said coldly, "Let Cheng’er come to the palace to see me."
"Yes."
Rushing to the imperial palace after receiving the message, Pei Chengye guessed that his mother might be aware of his little schemes, but he wasn’t particularly afraid.
He stepped into the sleeping chamber, saw the half-dozing person, and tiptoed closer, cupping his hands and saying, "I’ve seen Mother."
"Do you even regard me as your mother in your eyes?" the Empress said without opening her eyes.
"Of course."
"Hmph, you’ve never taken my words seriously, instead treating them as if they were nothing but wind past your ears."
This matter enraged the Empress greatly. Now was not the time to act. It was like losing doubly.
"Your son wouldn’t dare."
"It seems you indeed dare quite a lot, daring to use the Hidden Guard from the mansion to assassinate Shao He!" the Empress exclaimed, her hand smacking the low table. The teacup vibrated, spilling tea onto a nearby book.
