Chapter 394: Chapter 396: Antidote to the Poisonous Miasma
Shao He set down her chopsticks, her face clouded with deep melancholy. In the relationship between her and Pei Huaian, all the difficulties were being shouldered by him alone, and the grievances and pressures he endured were unimaginable to her.
"Miss, are you alright?" Qingxia, seeing that she was not eating and kept sighing, asked.
"Let’s call it off," Shao He waved her hand and stood up to walk outside. She always felt that she should do something for Pei Huaian, rather than let him make all the sacrifices silently.
She went under a large tree and stared blankly at the courtyard next door, reminiscing about her moments with Pei Huaian.
They had met at the Mass Burial Mound, and later on, she treated his leg. Whenever there was trouble, he always protected her.
The moon hung high in the sky, with Pei Huaian being the other person also admiring the moon.
Pei Huaian stood in front of the tent, his eyes deep as he looked into the distance, the corners of his mouth slightly lifted, holding a letter in his hand.
"Your Highness, the poison fog on the mountain hasn’t cleared yet. Are we to keep waiting here?" An Shi asked.
Pei Huaian smiled, "This Prince has already found a way to deal with that poison fog. The antidote is on the way."
"Really?" An Shi blinked. If the antidote really existed, then there was nothing to fear, and they could easily take down the mountain bandits.
"Hold on for a few more days."
Pei Huaian turned and walked toward the inside of the tent, with An Shi following behind, reporting, "Changzhou has been stabilized, and a large quantity of grain and food has been transported into the city. Even if we are besieged for ten days, there will be no problem."
"Good, that spy in the city must be closely monitored; he must not be allowed to escape." Pei Huaian planned to employ a counter-espionage strategy, using the spy to disseminate false information.
"Yes."
As they spoke, a servant came in with tea. An Shi immediately fell silent, and the servant placed the tray on the table and handed over a cup of hot tea.
Pei Huaian reached out to take the teacup, while a ruthless flash crossed the servant’s eyes.
A dagger slipped from his sleeve and fell into the servant’s hand. He suddenly stabbed at Pei Huaian.
The tea drinker remained still, sitting there motionless. An Shi grabbed the servant’s shoulder, pulling him back while his other hand seized the dagger from the servant’s hand and pressed it against his throat.
An Shi coldly interrogated, "Who sent you!"
Pei Huaian set down his teacup, looked indifferently at the held captive servant, then slowly stood up and walked towards the door.
"You..."
"Our master has long known there was a traitor in the camp, just didn’t announce it for the moment. It’s disappointing that you couldn’t stay calm," An Shi scoffed.
Pei Huaian stopped, turned to An Shi and said, "Kill him!"
Hearing Pei Huaian’s command, An Shi intensified his force.
"Ah..."
A scream resounded through the night, and Pei Huaian stepped out of the tent and headed towards the mountaintop against the cold wind.
At that moment, Pei Huaian was clad in white, looking ethereal, as if he would ride the wind home the next second.
"Your Highness..." An Shi hurried after him, calling out with concern.
"No matter."
"Your Highness, it’s too risky and dangerous, what if you hurt yourself?"
"It won’t happen," Pei Huaian said placidly, "Let’s go!"
Pei Huaian continued walking, but his figure grew increasingly weak, his cheeks pallid, his lips devoid of any color.
"An Jiu!" An Shi roared, and An Jiu appeared instantly.
"Quick, check on His Highness," An Jiu nodded and took Pei Huaian away.
An Shi turned around and went back to the tent, looking at the man whose jaw had been dislocated and who could no longer speak, and called a guard to keep watch over him.
The night grew late, the wind fiercer, and the previously calm woods began to stir.
An Jiu examined the situation and his expression changed drastically, "Your Highness, you..."
He hadn’t expected that the prince’s poisoning was so severe, similar to those who had died from the poison fog, and a bold guess formed in his mind.
"Your Highness, you didn’t venture into the poison fog alone, did you?"
Seeing the person not denying it, An Jiu was frantic, "Don’t worry, Your Highness, I will prepare the antidote as quickly as possible."
"The antidote is already on its way, you just need to keep me going these next few days," Pei Huaian had immense trust in Shao He. If she said there was a cure for the poison miasma, then there definitely was one.
Hearing the prince’s words, An Jiu couldn’t help but feel surprised, "This poison miasma is extraordinary. Despite years of research, I could only come up with a drug that temporarily delays the toxicity."
"I trust her."
This simple sentence fully expressed Pei Huaian’s trust in Shao He.
A flicker of jealousy ignited in An Jiu’s heart. The prince had never trusted anyone so completely, always being somewhat cautious even towards them.
"You may leave now."
"Yes!"
An Jiu withdrew, and An Shi immediately entered the tent to care for the gravely ill Pei Huaian, knowing that the prince had taken such a risk to venture into the poison miasma for their sake.
The night was dark, the mountain air chilly, but Pei Huaian slept soundly, a gentle smile on his lips as if he was having a beautiful dream.
The next morning, Shao He opened her bleary eyes, rubbed the corners of her eyes, and got up.
After washing up and having breakfast, she hurried to Anji Hall, as today was the day the medicine pills were escorted. She had already notified Luo Cheng to come over the previous night.
